Frizzy sort of wavy hair

wibblewobbleboard · 05/11/2022 08:40

Can you recommend me something that will make me have nice waves not frizz?

I've tried curly girl with high street products and got nowhere.

Silicone free. Hair food. Frizzeze.

Or alternatively where am I going wrong?

Am menopausal going grey and growing out colour if that's relevant.

Thank you in advance

It's all about getting the right product for your hair. And drying/styling it the right way for your hair.

I'd start with a cheap pot of gel. On soaking wet hair rake through a small amount and gently scrunch. Leave to dry and don't touch it. See what happens. Next time do the same, but scrunch dry with a diffuser. These are the baseline tests of how well your hair will curl in my book.

Some CG products are just too heavy for your kind of hair.

Some products leave a cast (like the cheap pink pot of boots curl creme) that when dry you scrunch out (scrunch the crunch out) but if you're heavy handed with the application, it can be horrible.

Some products are all about moisture. These don't tend to leave a cast but they can leave your hair feeling greasy and heavy.

It's trial and error. I like gels, they tend to be lighter. And you can buy dozens of different types of gel for curls!

My current favourite product is the curl jelly by Umberto Giannini (which was a shocker because I've spent some serious money on curly products and this is a £7 tube of gel from boots!).

Post a pic, that would help!

Sofacouchboredom · 05/11/2022 08:48

I use one called cantu moisturising curl activator cream.

It's amazing. I have frizzy, wavy hair (coloured but lots of greys) and with this stuff I get curls!

It does leave your hair feeling crunchy at first but as it dries it starts to soften and then it's fab!

MerylSqueak · 05/11/2022 08:52

I am this too. Really fed up with it.

wibblewobbleboard · 05/11/2022 08:53

Thanks everyone. And solidarity with those who are the same. I'll head to boots and pick up some gel.

I've a box full of curl crèmes and sprays and overnight this and condition that 🙄

Don't brush your hair when it's dry, it will cause it to frizz up. Try the Only Curls range and use a WetBrush. Use a water spray between washes and some defining custard.
Boots also do a curl cream for £1.99 that you could try.

Hattie72 · 05/11/2022 08:54

This is me too. I have so many products, but my hair always looks a mess these days.

Hayliebells · 05/11/2022 08:57

Me too, I feel like I’ve spent decades trying to get my hair “right”, had much about given up, but any new tips would be useful.

Crazymama86 · 05/11/2022 08:59

Watching with interest. I've straightened my wavy hair for 16 years. It's heat and colour damaged and I don't have time anymore to do anything other than wash and dry it these days!

I'd love to be able to wash it, apply a product and end up with controlled hair that doesn't look like I've slept in a bush.

Join Instagram if you’re not already on it and start following some curly accounts. Curly girl doesn’t work for everyone, it doesn’t for me. I have naturally quite curly hair but I used to think it was just frizzy and wavy. I’ve learnt that brushing it when dry is the worst thing ever, I wash it with normal shampoos as the curly girl stuff weighs it down, then I use normal conditioner but I then apply cantu custard (lots of people think this is just for coily hair but it isn’t) and then some john Frieda curl cream and scrunch. I then diffuse it dry and then scrunch the crunch out.

Karwomannghia · 05/11/2022 09:00

Mine is the same. It’s easier to get curls with layers to make sections lighter if that makes sense.
I’ve tried a lot of silicone free, T-shirts etc but the main thing is to brush hair before you wash and then dry a tiny bit so product doesn’t just wash off. Then I use good old curl mousse lightly put on the hair and scrunch it all in with head upside down. Then leave it to dry but keep scrunching every so often. But I do think the main thing is the cut with layers.

BottomlessPit · 05/11/2022 09:02

I’m similar to you, OP. I have tried Merwave stuff with some success but I can’t stand never brushing my hair! If I brush it, the wave drops though and it all goes frizzy.
When should we be brushing? Before washing? Thanks! X

Crazymama86 · 05/11/2022 09:04

When do we brush our hair if not when dry? I don't know what to do with it in the mornings when it's not washed.

AnnaMagnani · 05/11/2022 09:05

I have fine wavy hair. Bizarrely I have found using heavier products designed for coily hair better as my hair needs huge amounts of moisture to stop frizzing, and a stronger gel to stop any waves immediately falling out.

My holy grail products are Ecoslay Banana Cream and Ecoslay Rice Pudding Leave-in conditioner. I can wash, put the leave-in in, gel if I want to, and just leave my hair to dry naturally on my way to work. It is the ultimate in low effort.

Agree the best thing is to look at Youtube and find a curly hair blogger who looks like they have very similar hair to you.

Stygimoloch · 05/11/2022 09:05

I use Paul Mitchell Gloss Drops. The product says on the back to use on dry hair but years ago I had a brilliant hairdresser with curly hair and her advice was to use on wet hair. You then scrunch and leave to dry naturally. They have been amazing for my hair. I’ve used them for years now and will be devastated if they are ever discontinued!

Never. You never brush your hair.

In the mornings if not washing it, I just rake through mine with my fingers. If I am feeling really serious, I might wet my hands before doing it to refresh the curls and/or use a product like Jessicurl Awe Inspiralling Spray.

But a basic rule of curly hair is you don't brush.

wibblewobbleboard · 05/11/2022 09:11

I brush every day :( that's something I'll need to stop then.

My hair is curly and never frizzy. Even after bleaching it to death.

I use OGX shampoo and Shea Moisture conditioners. I have the Restore one (brown) for every day, and use a repair and protect (blue) deep conditioner at least once a week. I've only really started with the deep conditioner after bleaching my hair. Also make sure your hair is trimmed regularly to get rid of any split ends. Again, I only really got strict with this after bleaching my hair.

Styling is important. Make sure your hair is wet. Not damp. Use lots of gel (more than you think you need) and then scrunch your hair up. Use the diffuser to scrunch it a bit and set the curl, then leave it to dry naturally. Once it's mostly dry, I tip my head upside down and give it a scrunch to loosen it up a bit. I do have a curl cream that I can pop on it when its dry to smooth over any bits.

I wet my hair and restyle it every morning. Obviously don't use as much gel on days 2 and 3.

Afterfire · 05/11/2022 09:13

The only time I ever brush my hair now is when it’s wet and I’m about to put products into it and then I brush the products through to evenly distribute them. I have a tangle teezer curly detangling brush.

My hair never used to be this wavy / curly - a combination of lupus medication and grey hair changing the texture has sent it wild!

I only ever brush my hair after washing it and conditioning it. So about every 3/4 days.

The first rule of Curly hair club is you do not brush curly hair!

I hope I may join in this thread with a question of my own. Would anyone like to suggest a routine or any products for me please? I have lots and lots of hair. It’s very silky when blow dryer straight. Can stay wet/damp for hours. This is what it’s like after being in a total for 10 mins. Any thoughts?

Scrambledeggsontoasted · 05/11/2022 09:20

@Newtosocialsitessummer2017 do you dry your hair with a diffuser to get like that or leave it to dry naturally?

Mine looks like that naturally if I don't diffuse it. If I diffuse it, the curls really bounce up.

GuybrushT · 05/11/2022 09:21

Different products work for different people, you need to just keep trying til you find something right for you. I've tried lots of the products PPs have suggested that have given great results, but they didn't work for me! I also intitially went down the route of trying lots of the products I heard people mention for the curly girl method before realising my hair wasn't properly curly but wavy (2C) and it really didn't need as much heavy duty product as was being recommended! I personally find mousse works best for me as it's a lot lighter. My hair is low porosity and products just "sit" on it quite easily without getting absorbed and it then gets frizzy and dull. I once read that it's not the products you use that will have the biggest impact however but the technique you use to apply them. I use minimal product and the game changer for me was using the "squish to condish" method to put my conditioner in!

If you want to brush it, it's fine to brush when wet, and helps to distribute product, but never when dry! The Denman brush is great for this as it has widely spaced bristles.

Newtosocialsitessummer2017 · 05/11/2022 09:23

@Scrambledeggsontoasted

I don’t have a diffuser! As it dries it becomes fluffier and the curls drop to waves and the waves seem to straighten. It’s very soft silky and fine though there’s loads of it. I’d love to be wavy-curly!
