Do people really get a manicure every 2 weeks?

I'd like to start looking after my hands and nails a bit better. My usual salon charges £35 for a manicure with gel nails, which look nice for a couple of weeks. If I keep on top of it, that's £70-£105 a month just on nails.

Do normal people really spend that much every month on nails? I know I could do nail filing etc. at home (and do) but cuticle care is beyond me.

I've never had them done 😳... I'm utterly crap at painting my own too.. I gave no idea why I am so bad at it but I get it all over the skin... i suspect my dyspraxia is to blame... I could never colour neatly in the lines either !

Your comment has made me feel so much better. I never get mine done (apart from for my wedding and once randomly for treat when I was getting my hair done and they offered it at the same time as it was a new service), and I'm terrible at doing my own. I never know what colours suit me, my nails are different lengths and often broken.

I also rarely wear make-up, this year I've finally gotten my hair cut after 4 years, I just don't see the point in making that much effort!

Herejustforthisone · 04/11/2022 14:26

Bikini wax every four weeks.
Hair colour, cut, tone and treatment every eight weeks.
Botox every four months.
Dermal filler top-ups every eight to twelve months.
Profhilo every year.
Tan (spray) every week.
Massage every two weeks.
Tooth whitening every two years.

I’m the least high maintenance person day to day but you’d never know it looking at that little lot.

I do mine every week and costs me only time (1hr approx) as I do them myself. I have natural nails, though, not acrylics/gels. For me is just trim, file, polish, done. Every Sunday.
They always look good - I'm happy.

luckylavender · 04/11/2022 15:04

I always do my own, have loads of different colours. However recently I went to a Black Tie & treated myself to a manicure, normal polish. Then I went on holiday and did it again. To be honest I feel cheated. £60 which didn't last any longer than doing them myself.

blondiecurly · 04/11/2022 15:08

I used to get it done once a month, but only one person did a fantastic job. I went to about ten salons looking for someone good after her business closed and couldn't find anyone! Nail technicians are usually rude and speak in a foreign language, or they appear to despise their jobs silently.
And I recently purchased a large box of press-on nails for £10, which look really nice when painted and professional.

Pearls1234 · 04/11/2022 15:24

I used to get mine done every three weeks for £25 pre-COVID but moved during lockdown and haven’t picked it back up.

Someone actually recommended our local college which has an on-site salon. A full set of gels for £13 and the students get to practice, seems like a fair trade off.

mondaytosunday · 04/11/2022 15:29

Don't know anyone who gets regular manicures. Those who like polished nails seem to do it themselves.
I get a gel pedicure every couple months - a couple friends I know do that. But not manicures, and certainly not ebrio other week!
Gel would last longer.

Changerofthename1 · 04/11/2022 15:34

I know some fabulously high maintenance women who would think nothing of spending £500 a month on manicures pedicures waxy‘s etc but then they married to men who wouldn’t bat an eyelid at six grand a year going up in smoke.

gianfrancogorgonzola · 04/11/2022 15:36

I’ve ditched the gel nails in order to keep the cleaners! Realised that short/ neat with plenty of hand cream and cuticle oil is just as nice and much lower maintenance.

I'm exactly the same. I spend a lot of money to look average.

I used to. It was £42 a fortnight for gel removal and redo. Then the technician announced that she was putting her prices again for the second time in a year. She’s fully entitled to charge what she wants (and it’s broadly in line with most salons around here, South East) but I can’t afford that. Going to get a Mylee gel nail set and see how well I get on with doing my own. Costs less than a month’s worth and I can resell if I fail.

SunshineLoving · 04/11/2022 15:53

I don't have mine done regularly. I've had acrylics done a handful of times.

I have a few friends who have gel nails and they get them done every three weeks.

I'm getting a little jealous reading the comments on here...maybe I will have to start getting mine done.

HowBerryPeachy · 04/11/2022 16:01

I get BIAB (builder gel) every month. It gets infilled every 4ish weeks, I only do it once per pay so costs me around £30 a month.

Delatron · 04/11/2022 16:04

I had gel nails for the first time a few weeks ago and wondering whether to keep it up. I’d read they damage your nails so have avoided. But my nails are shit anyway and break all the time? Since the gel nails have been on they have grown and not a single one has broken? So I don’t see how they can make my nails any worse than they were. If anything they feel stronger with the gel on…

Coconutcream123 · 04/11/2022 16:08

Every 3-4 weeks, but I see someone who works from home / self employed and it's £17 for fingers and £32 for both fingers a toes. Toes I have done every 8 weeks. I wouldn't be able to afford a salon that often, I also find the salon doesn't last as long... so my girl must be pretty good.
I'd advice looking at mobile nail technicians.

IWishIWasABaller · 04/11/2022 16:11

I pay 40 euro every 3/4 weeks on biab gel nails

Wheredoallthepensgo · 04/11/2022 16:27

No I only get mine done for holidays, special events, big birthday nights out etc. I think I've had them done 3 times this year so far and have a booking for "Christmas" nails so 4. It's about £25-30 for gels here dep on if I choose any nail art etc.

Manicure every week ( normal.polish)
Pedicure every fortnight( normal polish)
Face threading every fortnight
Roots done every three weeks
Full leg and full bikini wax every four weeks

Nothing personal but I genuinely don't understand how people have the time for all this. My great excitement is that I've found a new hairdresser locally who will do a cut and blowdry for £35 and takes under half an hour. I'd be bored witless sitting through all of this.

Endofmytetherfinally · 04/11/2022 21:33

I get sns and it lasts 6-8 weeks on my hands. Feet I just do gel and it lasts at least 4 months.

Beanbagtrap · 04/11/2022 21:38

I've only ever had my nails done once when I got married (before gel was widely available so it was just polish). The woman was so horrible to me and berated me for not oiling my cuticles daily and literally looked like I was something on her shoe, she also got in a mood when I didn't want a very dark ?nearly black) polish for my wedding day. It was such a miserable experience I've never had the guts to do it again.

Do you not have horrific regrow that after 8 weeks?

I can’t go more than 3 and regroup is a quarter of the way up my nail bed. Any more than that and I’d have serious breakages.

Fairislefandango · 04/11/2022 21:47

Do normal people really spend that much every month on nails?

Most normal people I know (including me) don't have their nails done at all tbh.

Herejustforthisone · 04/11/2022 21:48

levitybrevity · 04/11/2022 15:46

I'm exactly the same. I spend a lot of money to look average.

I can look nice when I want to, and my base level is probably quite ‘done’, but yeah, I’m quite a scruffy laid back dresser. I feel great though.

DrMadelineMaxwell · 04/11/2022 21:48

I'm a shocking nail biter/picker/breaker. The one thing that has me looking after my nails and leaving them alone is to get a gel manicure. My nails *when left alone) grow q quickly and if they aren't perfectly smooth then I'm prone to pick at them again. I get 2 weeks between them before I'm tempted to pick and spoil it.

Luckily my lady does free soak off removals and it costs £20 for a gel manicure, and £22 for gel with a layer of builder gel for strength.

Acrylics infills for DD (mother-daughter activity) are £27 inc nail art.

Spectre8 · 04/11/2022 21:55

I just pop into my local nail salon and ask them to tidy them up e.g. a maniure but no polish. So they tidy up cuticles and shape them. Costs me £10. I do that whenever I think my nails need it so manybe once a month or every 2-3 months.

I may paint them myself but I have got used to them not being painted and they just as good
