A ridiculously warm jumper for home

As a menopausal woman, I usually stay away from really warm clothes. However with the cost of living etc, we're avoiding putting the heating on for long hours and the inside of my house (large old victorian) is actually colder than the outside. When I get home, if I put on one of those hooded blankets I might achieve warmth, but I also feel restricted, lazy and like all I want to do is be on the sofa. I am looking for a jumper/jacket I can wear at home that provides masses of warmth without compromising movement. I already have a fitted fleece jacket, but it's just not enough right now, so moving forward as it gets colder, it's just not going to cut it. TIA!

Do you wear a thermal base layer? That might work better without leaving you feeling restricted.

Perfectlystill · 03/11/2022 05:31

Silk vest makes all the difference.

codehelp · 03/11/2022 05:33

Yeah, lots of thermal layers, I like the M&S ones for softness.

I've also just bought an oodie from Vinted and it's lovely and warm. (Not too far off wearing a sort of blanket though so possibly not what you're looking for.)

Bemoredog · 03/11/2022 05:34

Thermal best and top then jumped over. I've found men's jumpers to be warmer and have some from TKMaxx.

Cashmere jumper/cardi. I have several, all second hand from charity shops. They are fine enough to wear as part of layering but are really warm.

FormerlySpeckledyHen · 03/11/2022 06:38

Uniqlo Extra Warm Heattech range under your fleece jacket and you will be roasting!

EtonMusk · 03/11/2022 06:44

I've got a thick and fleecy-inside fleece jacket from M&S. it's not pretty but it's extremely warm.

SalviaOfficinalis · 03/11/2022 06:47

Agree with pp - mens jumpers are always warmer.

And wool rather than synthetic is warmer - I have this Men’s jumper from M&S. I’m a size 12 and have the Medium size - it’s quite big but nice for in the house.

NoDairyNoProblem · 03/11/2022 09:48

I have been wearing M&S thermal base layer with their merino wool jumpers (under £30) with wide leg jersey trousers and thick woolen socks at home. Not bulky at all and I feel smart enough to answer the door/have unexpected visitors etc.

Poncho or cape style jumper....

I've got a sherpa lined hoodies from animal that is very snug. I get so much wear out of them, good for cold summer days as a coat. Good for the beach over a bikini in Cornwall.

SillyDoriswithaDangler · 03/11/2022 10:33

Get an Oodie!

DoodlePug · 03/11/2022 10:35

Thermal base
Merino or cashmere jumper
Poncho or gilet for max movement whilst allowing airflow.

I highly recommend a USB heat pad down your back between the base and jumper.

BrennieGirl · 03/11/2022 10:38

I have a couple of Aran jumpers and cardigans. They are the warmest cosiest things I own.

Whatsleftnow · 03/11/2022 10:38

Cashmere. It’s a pain to wash but wool doesn’t need washing as often as synthetics. And it’s lightweight and easy to work in. Buy a bigger size than you need.

Silk underwear is lovely too. I can’t cope with feeling restricted and I wear a strappy silk vest if I need to not be cold.

a kidney warmer is another great way of adding a layer where it matters without weighing yourself down. Also wrist warmers!

WhereAreWeNow · 03/11/2022 11:35

I think it's about layers. When it's really cold I wear Uniqlo extra warm thermal top (maybe a polo neck), a wool or cashmere jumper on top. Then when I'm not on a work call, I add a padded gilet or a Uniqlo fleece jacket and fingerless cashmere gloves. If I'm on a call I take off the extra jacket.
Hats are good too. And thick socks and slippers.

Get a Norwegian or Icelandic wool jumper/cardigan and you'll be toasty forever! I was lucky enough to find a few in charity shops but have a look on eBay.

Icedlatteplease · 04/11/2022 08:59

Woolovers long cardigan. Washable, presentable very very warm

AntlerRose · 04/11/2022 09:08

I agree with the thermal vests.

And contrary to everyone else, i find a big fluffy synthetic fleece really warm inside. I have saisburys fleece pyjama jumpers. So not for looking smart, but so warm indoors.

Floydthedemonbarber · 04/11/2022 09:23

Cashmere. Picked up a longline cadi in a sale last year and it is so, so warm and very light. I also dislike adding bulk. I sometimes layer it with a light wool jumper.

Branleuse · 04/11/2022 09:33

Id look for a cashmere jumper as its a lot of warmth for not too much bulk. I got a lovely mens one that had shrunk and gone a bit felted in a charity shop the other day for a fiver, but still fitted me, and is extra warm.

Also consider an oodie

Boshi · 04/11/2022 13:00

Uniqlo thermal long sleeved top plus cashmere rollneck jumper (look on eBay for secondhand or even BN bargains), you will be nice and warm . Add a wool or cashmere beanie on top you’ll be roasting

JeniferAllisonPhillipaSue · 04/11/2022 13:05

Add turtle dove Cashmere fingerless gloves. I look like the pigeon lady from home alone with them and my shawl but they keep me warm.
