Rosacea recommendations

Hi all, I posted a thread a few days ago asking for suggestions to treat my face which felt tight and as if I had sunburn. On the advice of that thread I got some La Roche Posay toleraine and some cerave, but it isn't better.
The nurse at the GP surgery thinks it's rosacea and has prescribed a metronidazole gel and I bought some Eucarin anti redness cream but can any of you recommend something that has actually soothed your skin? Everything I put on just feels slightly stingy and doesn't actually cool or soothe.
The nurse said the gel could take 8 weeks to make a difference and it's driving me nuts because my face is sore, stingy and at the same time slightly itchy.
Am desperate here for a miracle product!

I really love Pai and it’s the only skincare brand I use these days.
Everything else irritates and makes my face sore but Pai is like a hug for my skin. It’s not cheap unfortunately but Look Fantastic have good deals sometimes or if you sign up to Pai’s website, you get a discount code. They do trial kits I think so you can see if it’s any good for you.

Thank you, I will take a look tomorrow. I'm desperate for something that stops the sting!

I have rosacea and I use sulphur soap regularly to wash my face - it’s made a massive difference for me and I wouldn’t be without it. You can buy it very cheaply from Amazon.

Moisturiser - something very gentle. I like the Roche Posay range

Apileofballyhoo · 01/11/2022 21:29

What are you using to clean your face? I find Avene Tolerance moisturiser more soothing the LRP and avene extremely gentle cleanser less irritating than LRP. The mineral water spray can feel cooling and soothing. Keep your face away from anything warm and shampoo.

I think there was a thread in the past few days asking about rosalique which mentioned something to protect skin from the elements which I meant to take note of.

Everybody's skin is a bit different so I suppose what suits one person might not suit everyone.

Did anybody mention soolantra?. For a specific type of rosacea only I think.

Any chance you're perimenopause?

ImAvingOops · 01/11/2022 21:34

I'm definitely in peri menopause and I've been on HRT for about a year. I'm wondering whether I need to up my dose since I've never had any skin problems before and have developed this out of nowhere.

I bought some LRP miceller water to clean my skin but I don't like it so have just been using water and moisturising - am not wearing any make up at all right now. I have some samples of cerave facial wash but haven't used them yet.

Azelaic acid is sometimes suggested for rosacea (facetheorey and inkey list) and niacinamide for redness. CeraVe pm has niacinamide in it as far as I remember. I haven't really used CeraVe since my face decided to heat up. It feels a bit stingy now.

Apple cider vinegar is supposed to be good. To take but not put on your face! Or there are supplements.

There's an irish brand called Finca I think, I havent tried any of their stuff.

ImAvingOops · 01/11/2022 21:37

I just googled Rosalique but I'm not sure what makes it different to the Eucarin, which is also described as anti redness and soothing.

ImAvingOops · 01/11/2022 21:39

I do have some apple cider vinegar though

ImAvingOops · 01/11/2022 21:40

I'm glad you specified to take and not put on my face though!

I saw a woman on another group whose face went back to normal when she switched to continuous progesterone.

I can tolerate rosalique and the inkey list sunscreen. Most other things make it worse for me and I dont wear the sunscreen or rosalique stuff much as I have to use cleanser to take them off, so mostly I'm just water and moisturiser too.

I'm more than convinced it's because of perimenopause for me. I'm on hrt too and I think it has improved a bit.

QuicheQuoche · 01/11/2022 21:42

I like Rosalique but prefer IT Cosmetics CC Cream, I’m sure the founder of IT has rosacea.
I find micellar water very drying and irritating. I used the Garnier one when it first came out, took my face about 3 weeks to recover.

Apileofballyhoo · 01/11/2022 21:46

Yeah I don't know if rosalique is any different or better or anything. I think the person on the rosalique thread might have said eucerin was just as good and cheaper. I barely use it as it's very dark and a bit drying I think too.

Dragonskin · 01/11/2022 21:49

Soolantra was my saviour (got via Superdrug doctor as need prescription)

It depends on type of rosacea but mine was bumpy and red, so was possible that demodex was involved and honestly this stuff was magic.

ImAvingOops · 01/11/2022 21:52

Thank you all for replying. I think I'll ring the pharmacist at my DRs tomorrow and talk about upping the HRT. I had no idea rosacea was a peri menopause symptom - am so fed up of my hormones trashing my life. I feel like an old lady sometimes.
My mum says that rosacea is linked with low B vitamins and has told me to take a high strength supplement but I think that's more long term. I just want my face to stop stinging!

I'll ask about soolantra. I don't have many bumps but my face does feel like it has a couple of heat bumps and is warm and itchy. Was it expensive via Superdrug and do you think I could use it alongside the metronidazole gel?

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 01/11/2022 22:18

CeraVe takes a good 3 weeks to repair the skin barrier, keep going.

Dragonskin · 01/11/2022 22:20

It was about £20 if I remember but I have been using it for over a year and am still on the same tube (started a couple of times a day, then once a day, and have ended up once a week to keep it under control)

You have to fill in a questionnaire for the doctor to review and they will give you guidance

Cardboardkiddo · 01/11/2022 22:30

I developed rosacea after my first pregnancy. Agree soolantra and/or azelaic acid have helped, wash with cerave smoothing cleanser and moisturise with Avene cicalfate.
Avoid the sun at all costs it really triggers my rosacea- 50 spf is a must if you’re in the sun. The only one that doesn’t sting is La Roche posay anthelios. It’s expensive but I only use it on my face.

ooohaaaahjustalittlebit · 01/11/2022 22:38

Soolantra. Cleared my rosacea after 20 years! Life changing.

LakeFlyPie · 01/11/2022 22:38

Cetaphil gentle cleanser and moisturising lotion has been fantastic for settling my rosacea with a dab of Soolantra for flare ups. GP hadn't heard of it but when we discussed it was happy to prescribe

HappyHolidai · 01/11/2022 22:46

Soolantra is ivermectin, which got weird publicity at the start of the Covid pandemic. Anyway I agree it is excellent.

I've had various antibiotic tablets over the years and a dermatologist GP put me onto Efracea which is a special formulation of doxycycline designed specifically for rosacea. It's pretty good too.

I only ever wash my face with water, almost never wear make-up and use a sensitive skin moisturiser with SPF all year round. Also wear a hat in the summer.

Between all of the above it's down to flaring up occasionally from having been very red and irritated. Oh, and the metrizonal gel didn't do much for me at all; it seems like they have to try it but as far as I can tell it is rarely sufficient and often useless.

Randomuser9876 · 01/11/2022 22:54

Could you please link to that soap Trying2bemum?

Randomuser9876 · 01/11/2022 23:00

I don't have much to add OP, rosacea is so frustrating as everyone is slightly different so there's a lot of trial and error.

Soolantra is definitely worth the try as there are no side effects and lots of people see good results. It does work on redness for some people if that's down to dermodex.

I use cetaphil gentle wash for my face which I've found really good, plus try and find an spf you can tolerate, I like ultrasun family.

jeaux90 · 02/11/2022 07:32

Medik8 has some specific stuff for this. Read the reviews on their website.

ImAvingOops · 02/11/2022 09:09

Thanks again everyone, loads of things here for me to try
