Why are companies still choosing to use only very slender models?

I get it, the clothes look great and I can choose not to buy etc but it's not representative of all of the market, maybe that's their target market.

For instance I was having a look at Me&Em not one model over a size 8/10 I want to see what lovely clothes might look like on all different shapes and sizes or is it that their clothes will look shit unless you're tall and willowy.

Why in 2022 are companies still allowed to discriminate in this way because choosing very slim models only seems like discrimination to me.

I'm a size 12 I'm 5ft 7 but not willowy I have big norks and I feel invisible a lot of the time when it comes to clothing.

Am I being unreasonable with my little rant?

I've noticed tons of chubby models recently.

If they think it'll bring in sales then they'll use bigger models.

Tbh, often, a 'plus size' model looks much better in the clothes than I then do when I order them. I guess different styles suit different bodies.

They've got stylists and cosmetics people plus fashion photographers, you'd struggle to get the same effect yourself really.

verdantverdure · 27/10/2022 22:16

Asos often has the same clothes in the curve section too. I find it more useful to see someone wearing the 16 or 18 than the 6 or the 8.

(Even though the models are all young.)

strangeflowers · 28/10/2022 01:49

Strange, I am 5.5 tall and size 6. I started a thread last year on here asking for advice about gaining muscle and was told I was miserably underweight and unhealthy.
Interesting that so many of you now state that you think a 5'10 model at my weight is just fine and healthy.
MN is a clusterfuck of self loathing.

This image shows what the garment looks like when a normal person wears it:

That may be a normal size as in “lots of people are that size”, but she is significantly overweight.

LaraLei · 28/10/2022 17:11

That’s not a normal weight, that is very overweight.

KirstenBlest · 28/10/2022 18:12

She looks quite normal to me but the clothes do nothing for her. Bet she looks lovely in other clothes.
There is no way I'd buy the top on the basis of those photos.

Mystery2345 · 28/10/2022 18:13

You'd think that technology would have solved this by offering generated images of the clothes on different sizes and heights. It must be possible. So you have to ask yourself - why isn't this offered? Is it because sales would drop? Genuine question!

Tabbouleh · 28/10/2022 18:36

I don't want to offend anybody but that is not a normal size by any definition. That is plus size. I want to see more size 10 or 12 women.

PreColumbian · 28/10/2022 22:24

Tabbouleh you are right. The model pictured is plus sized and not representative of the very many women who are sized 10/12.

BigFatLiar · 28/10/2022 22:33

Depends what a 10/12 is, different shops and manufacturers have different sizing.

NormaTheWife · 28/10/2022 23:04

Wait until you are looking at mother of the bride dresses. it's a nightmare of Avatars,

KirstenBlest · 29/10/2022 08:54

@NormaTheWife , if that's the mother of the bride, the bride must be very young.

PinkArt · 29/10/2022 11:55

I'd love to see more models with bodies in a more 'normal person' size range. It'd help enormously to see how those clothes actually hang on a body with a little more body fat - slightly wider hips, bigger boobs etc. I'm currently an 18 and don't necessarily need to see models who are my size, but there are far less mental gymnastics required to see how something would translate from seeing it on a size 12 body than a size 6 one.

crossstitchingnana · 25/10/2022 06:50

Some, like Snag tights, show nothing but overweight models. I would just like normal and average.

Yes, I've been put off using Snag to be honest. Comes across as a plus size range.

Gwenhwyfar · 30/10/2022 14:34

I either want to see clothes on a shape that is exactly like mine - someone on here suggested a personal avatar for online shopping - OR on a totally standard body that I can look at an imagine what it would be like on me. So, if a model has a dress to the knee, I know it will come up a bit higher on my legs so I know what to expect.
The models have to be thin for it to work for me.
If the model is 'curvy' then I don't know if the dress is adding the bulk or it's the model's own 'bulk' if you see what I mean. I can't judge the dress if I have to take into account the model's body.

M&S had a campaign a while ago where they used famous women of different shapes. It was a nice gimmick, but it did nothing to sell clothes. You couldn't tell if the clothes where unflattering or if it was the women's own bodies that made them not hang properly.

Basically, we need something quite standard.

Clothes do look generally better on a slim person.

Some do look better on large people. Also depends on proportions of course. A larger person who is hourglass shaped will look better in many clothes than a straight up and down thin person. There are two girls who do this comparison and the larger girl generally looks better.

Personally, I don't have those ideal proportions though so a plus size model wouldn't inspire me to buy those clothes.

Lots of very thin models may be sizes 10 or 12 because of their height. They're still not going to look like you and me.

Gwenhwyfar · 30/10/2022 14:46

"And honestly, if I saw a dress on a size 22 model, I absolutely wouldn’t buy it.
Neither would I. I wouldn’t be able to move past wondering “does she look fat in that dress because she’s fat, or because it’s a really unflattering dress?”"

I think I would get that more with a size 12. With a size 22 it's obvious the model is very large, but with a 12, it would be a challenge. This is what was wrong with the M&S campaign imo.

HailOWeen · 30/10/2022 14:49

Irrespective of what is 'normal,' NOBODY aspires to be fat. It's disingenuous to use the 'body positivity movement' to suggest that overweight women are happy being overweight. Most women still want to be slim.

I don't agree that the larger girl looks better at all. I also think she is not "curvy" as the website describes her; she is seriously overweight.

Well you can be curvy AND overweight, which I think she is.
I didn't say she's healthier, but I definitely thinks she looks better in some of the clothes. They do videos as well so I've seen more clothes than on this blog post.

ButterflyBiscuit · 30/10/2022 15:47

Wow not seen those 2 before. They both look good but I agree the curvier one looks so much better in those outfits!
