I keep putting on my 8 year old's tights

For the umpteenth time this month I've tried to put on my 8 year old DDs tights.

Hers are age 10-11 and mine are medium size ladies but all are black, with no labels and are indistinguishable until I get two thirds of the way through pulling them up and realise they stop half way across my bottom. It's not a good look. The first time it happened I didn't realise they were hers and thought I had just put on so much weight in the last year that they wouldn't fit.

She wears hers for school and I live in dresses and tights in winter so they get mixed in most washes. Can anyone think of an easy way to mark them / identify them so I can easily tell which are mine and which are hers? I can't take the mental trauma of constantly trying to accidentally squeeze myself into kids tights!!

If you've found this page in search of tights that have been tried and tested by fellow Mumsnet users, you might find our guide to the best tights useful. Hope this helps! MNHQ

I read something on here recently where a poster said they sewed a few threads in the back of her tights. Red stitches for her green stitches for daughter, or something similar. You probably only need to sew your own and leaved DD's plain

Mamette · 24/10/2022 18:57

Put a dot of red or pink nail varnish on the inside of the waistband of your DD’s.

tinselvestsparklepants · 24/10/2022 18:59

See a loop of bright cotton into the back of one of the pairs.

We have this problem and I’m never organised enough to sew a few stitches in 🙄 but I think next time I get her a new packet, I will do.

ToadSmall · 24/10/2022 19:01

I sew three stitches into the top of all school tights and into the toes of all school socks. One colour for each child. Otherwise I would be demented. My girls wear knee socks for school so they can't have one of each length. Grin

I got so fed up with this I used cotton thread in 3 colours for the 3 different sizes (dd2 small dd1 medium me large)

MavisTheMonkey · 24/10/2022 19:07

@Mamette does the nail varnish stay? I will give that a try otherwise I'm going to have to get the needle and thread out! For some reason I thought sewing might rip the tights but I guess doing it at the waistband would work.
Im generally too unorganised for sewing tasks but it's driving me mad so will have to do it.

DD and I both wear M&S tights and the different sizes have different colour threads stitched into the back waistband already. I just have to remember which colour is my size and which is DD's when I'm in a hurry in the morning I usually forget.

ToadSmall · 24/10/2022 19:10

You will feel so damn smug when you've done it!

Inanun2 · 24/10/2022 19:12

3 different sized opaque tights in this house I used nail varnish initials for girls and an x for mine.

ShangPie · 24/10/2022 23:06

Alternatively get a washable bag that lives in your laundry basket - you just take off your tights, put them in, zip up and bung in the wash. No sorting, no sewing!

Helps them last longer too, as they don’t get all stretched out by the washing machine.

pimlicoanna · 24/10/2022 23:13

This is why I buy the kids' socks and tights form M&S. the size is in the waistband/top of socks

redbigbananafeet · 24/10/2022 23:22

I opened this thread hoping for a photo. I'm disappointed.

Do you know anyone with a crulicut machine? Ask them to make heat transfer dots in 2 different colours and iron them inside

mrssmiling · 24/10/2022 23:31

Would something like this work? If you don’t want to sew? There is a product you can use to attach name tapes to clothes - little plastic pins with a backing. www.wovenlabelsuk.com/school-labels/wl-riv.html
These look similar but are coloured.
