Why does DD's hair do this?

QueenMabby · 15/10/2022 12:55

Dd has long, straight hair. Possibly fine but there's a hell of a lot of it.

When she washes it, if she doesn't blow dry it completely then her hair ends up just looking like it's still wet even when it's dry. She can never leave her hair to air dry as it just ends up looking damp/oily even though it isn't. Even with the hairdryer it takes forever to dry and some patches sometimes look damp even when dry.

Does anyone know why it does this? It's a real pain! She's 13. Thanks.

She just had greasy hair?
Some combination of:
Shampoo for greasy hair, really rub it in. No conditioner, or just the ends. Wash in the morning not evening. Wash hairbrush periodically.

McConkeysPlate · 15/10/2022 14:30

Does she swim a lot?

GingerbreadPanda · 15/10/2022 14:30

If desperate you can essentially strip wash it with washing up liquid once a month. It's not good for your hair but if it's bothering her I woukd/did.
As to why, probably puberty (unless she's recently gone on the pill), it'll hopefully go away when she's older but that's not helpful now.

katepilar · 15/10/2022 14:35

Have you tried different shampoos?

WhatsitWiggle · 15/10/2022 14:38

Could be product build up. Try a clarifying shampoo (I use Paul Mitchell but it's quite pricey IMO) and make sure she is thoroughly rinsing out the conditioner.

steppemum · 15/10/2022 14:41

it sounds to me as if she hasn't rinsed all the product off.

one way round this is to use conditioner first. only on bottom half if she has long fine hair.
Then shampoo and the shampoo takes the conditioner off properly bit leaves it well conditioned.

FarmhouseLiving22 · 15/10/2022 14:41

She won't be washing her shampoo/conditioner out properly. Use a pea sized amount and shampoo hair twice, and then again, a 50p sized blob of conditioner through the ends. At the end of showering, get her to turn her head upside down and that will make sure all product is completely rinsed off.
Also clarifying shampoo! Especially if she swims? But if also prevents product buildup. Xx

Sandysandwich · 15/10/2022 14:42

Is she washing it properly?
If its quite heavy hair and she is brushing it flat to her head and leaving it to dry it will stay stuck to her head which will look bad and take forever to dry. If she brushes it backwards and fluffs it up a bit does it break it up and look better?

Sago1 · 15/10/2022 14:49

My hair is exactly the same,it’s because the hair is so porous.
I have to blow dry mine otherwise it’s a dull lank mess.

JudgementalCentipede · 15/10/2022 14:55

Omg, mine does this!! Always has, never found a reason why! I know I can't sit around with wet hair for too long without drying it though. It's as if being wet causes my oil glands to go into overdrive?!

fallfallfall · 15/10/2022 14:59

Either products that don’t suit her hair type or not rinsing properly.

Ivyy · 15/10/2022 15:00

My dd is similar age and exactly the same, I keep meaning to try the body shop tea tree shampoo as apparently it's good for this

largeprintagathachristie · 15/10/2022 15:09

Ask her to double the amount of time she rinses for.

This is what I have to do and blow dry well, then use a straightening brush.

dontgobaconmyheart · 15/10/2022 15:51

Improper rinsing or shanpooing probably. How does she wash it?

My hair would be a bit flat and limp if I let it air dry and takes forever to dry underneath and around the scalp. Better to make sure she shampoos thoroughly' getting product into all layers by lifting the hair and getting in there properly or with a scalp massager. Condition if needed on ends only. Afterwards rinse doing the same for twice as long as usual. Gently squeeze out all excess water, put up in a microfibre towel, brush gently and blowdry the roots upside down a short while later.

If she doesn't want to blow dry then I'd at least recommend letting it air dry and then finishing off with the dryer in the same way.

QueenMabby · 15/10/2022 15:57

Thanks for all the comments.

  1. She shampoos and conditions in the shower. Elvive dream lengths stuff.
  2. She's not a swimmer
  3. Generally not greasy hair - roots look a bit oily after 3 or 4 days but not otherwise.
  4. I've lectured and lectured about proper rinsing. She does the squeak test.

It might just be puberty - I don't remember it being like this when she was little. I'm trying to encourage her to have it cut a bit shorter (it's currently nearly waist length!) which I'm hoping might help.

It could be the dimethicone in the shampoo building up. You could make up a baking soda paste and work it through her hair.

LemonsOnSaleAgain · 15/10/2022 16:19

Does she use styling products? They might also cause buildup in her hair.

MoaningMaude · 15/10/2022 21:49

Does she do two shampoos as if I don't my hair never looks clean.

Georgesgrumpymedicine · 15/10/2022 23:49

It could be bad washing technique.

I second needing to shampoo twice. Mine is never clean with once. And make sure the shampoo goes all over her hair, massage especially into the roots.

MrsTuxedo · 16/10/2022 19:48

First thought was not rinsing enough or putting enough. Second thought, maybe try another conditioner with no silicone.

MrsTuxedo · 16/10/2022 19:48

Putting too much*

nex18 · 16/10/2022 21:34

That’s how my hair looks if I use that shampoo (the dream lengths is the peachy/ orangey coloured bottle?). Had to wash it out with fairy liquid.

Haus1234 · 16/10/2022 21:39

Maybe the shampoo and conditioner just isn’t working for her? I used to get something similar with all garnier products - just always looked greasy. Aussie works well for me.

QueenMabby · 17/10/2022 09:59

Thanks all.

She reminded me that she hasn't used the Elvive stuff for "ages". Simple shampoo and Aussie conditioner is what I bought her apparently.
