Does it look a bit old now?

@limitededitionbarbie lovely hair. What colour is it.

limitededitionbarbie · 16/10/2022 19:02

I have no idea @CornishTiger but if you list the question what exactly to ask the hairdresser who did it I shall email her for you.

People still do have fools though. Balayage is as old as the hills. It became more known in the UK over the past 20 years but it wasn't a fashion thing OP. Just an alternative way of doing highlights. It started in the 1970s. Hardly a trend thing. Just something that wasn't really done here and then it was. You seem to think it was done crazy new fad that has had its day. It's not a fashion thing any more than foils are.

You seem to be unaware of "trends"

I think it's just a commonly used technique.... When I want it updated I sometimes get a different toner and low lights, the colour can be blended different ways. Unless you mean a really dramatic one?

Yes it's commonly used now. As were foils 20 years ago.

Yes people have always died there hair. But some effects are more popular at certain times. I really don't know why this is objectionable 🤷‍♀️

Don’t worry @limitededitionbarbie yours is a different red to mine. Here’s mine 5 months after pro colour.

Well I don't think that the retro 90s style stripy foil highlights will be coming back in, but if they do I certainly won't be getting them! 😂

Ah you say that now! 🤣

limitededitionbarbie · 16/10/2022 19:12

"One of the most common and oft requested styles"... according to Marie Clair:

@CornishTiger if that's your hair it's gorgeous

"Ten years ago balayage wasn’t the colouring phenomenon it is today, it’s quite a specific method of colouring that hasn’t been widely taught in the UK until recently. Balayage ‘is especially popular with celebrities and is a classic look for the red carpet’ says Richard Ward. After spotting it on celebrities like Gisele, Chrissy Teigen and Jessica Alba, there has been a surge in interest for the technique as people are requesting the look."

Yep it’s me. I’m just editing a few pics with my face and background out.

CornishTiger · 16/10/2022 19:20

This was the day I had it done. ( I’ll ask mnhq to delete at some point)

Maybe in some circles, something that doesn't require balayage will become trendy. Probably thick stripy highlights, 90/00s style.

But for me, and I image majority of others, it's not a trend thing. It's just a better way of doing something we always have and always will do.

I've been getting highlights for the past 20 years using different techniques. I probably won't move from balayage because it blends so much better with my roots, meaning I can go longer between dyes.

SummerCarnival · 16/10/2022 19:23

I love balayage. I agree it's not really an 'in' or 'out' thing. More of a technique.

Here's mine. I've had blonde baby lights since this as I thought the roots were too harsh but I love a balayage.

So I’m over 40 and my dark brown hair had never been professionally coloured. I always wanted full on red hair. However my very sensible hairdresser who has been cutting my hair for nearly 20 years pointed out I wouldn’t have the time or money for the 6wkly salon visits for the roots.

So she did a balayage with a darker root so I could keep on top of it myself. The difference in red is probably due to lighting but the actual colour is more like the first picture.

SummerCarnival · 16/10/2022 19:26

Here's a more recent one. I've had the top softened. I love balayage if it's done properly. I think ombré's are too harsh.

@CornishTiger what colour is yours! I love it

Thank you.

In first pic

bleach segments
Top is a mix of L’Oréal Marigel 5 and 6.60
then marirouge 6.66 weaved though on the bleach and 6.60 on rest I think.

Then manic panic vampire red and pillarbox red combined.

I’ve then maintained roots with 5 and 6.60 and the manic panic mix.

Calphurnia88 · 16/10/2022 19:35

I would say it's a lot more common than it used to be, with many salons offering it but you do get what you pay for (speaking from experience).

If you follow trends religiously then you've probably moved onto something else by now, but personally I think a subtle, natural looking balayage will never go out of fashion.

limitededitionbarbie · 16/10/2022 19:40

@CornishTiger thank you I have screen shorted that and your colour for my Christmas session ♥️

LivesinLondon2000 · 16/10/2022 19:40

Agree with other posters that balayage isn’t hugely a fashion thing. It’s just freehand highlights. I dye my hair and also have balayage just to break up the colour and make it look a bit less blocky - much like my hair looked naturally as a child. I don’t think highlights in general are going out of fashion anytime soon

limitededitionbarbie · 16/10/2022 19:41

@SummerCarnival your hair rod gorgeous

Really stunning.

Balayage literally translates to sweeping. It is a way of applying lightener or colour. It was around long before the ombre look and will be around long after the ombre look is out of style. You don't always get long roots with balayage.
