Do they have to be Nike?

I'm a bit rubbish with fashion but want to be better.

I see everyone out and about in white trainers with things I'd usually have put heels with and am dying to happy to make the transition.

All of the 'cool' people to see seem to have chunky white Nike trainers - I love them look but do they have the be Nike to get the look right?

Is adidas acceptable with people who get fashion? Or am I stuck in the 00s?
Puma? Or is that 90s?

I'm mid 30s for context

Help please 🙏🏻

I physically can’t ram my trotters into Nike as they’re too narrow for my feet, adidas fit me well so that’s what I wear.

Saying that I’m in my 50s so don’t give a toss what anyone thinks about my brand of anything, and am more concerned about what it feels like rather than having a swoosh. I genuinely don’t think people over the age of about 25 really notice/care what brand others are wearing. (Or do I choose to think that because I don’t go for the big brands?🤷🏼‍♀️)

Dovana · 09/10/2022 09:50

There are so many brands these days that you could choose from. They don’t ‘have’ to be anything, really. I think white trainers are just another classic staple now.

I like my chunky white Nike AF1s, or slim low top white canvas shoes from Lacoste or Converse, depending on what I’m wearing (I actually don’t do trainers & dresses at all, though). I’m in my 40s and a classic dresser, though, not really into fashion.

A lot of 30/40/50 something women seem to like Adidas Stan Smiths, Vejas, New Balance.

The really fashionable people I know are wearing black or colourful trainers. A whole other minefield! 😆

Kiitos · 09/10/2022 10:09

Nike are shit quality these days, the ones I’ve had without fail have worn out at the back of the ankle. I much prefer Adidas and Puma. You’ll find similar looking shoes from all the big brands

Shamoo · 09/10/2022 10:11

Agree that I would expect Stan smiths to be ok.

PanicAtTheBigTesco · 09/10/2022 10:12

Any brand is fine tbh, Nike Air Force 1's are unbelievably comfy though so I stick with them!

theshadeofgreen · 09/10/2022 10:20

I had some Stan smiths but the tongue was so long that it always sat to the outside of my ankle and looked weird.

Wondering if this is all adidas shoes or just those.

I have some white chunky trainers from asos but my niece (15) kindly scowled at me yesterday and said 'what brand even are they' with a look of contempt...... she dragged me back into fashion mode, I think Confused

I'm 52 and wear colourful new balance with dresses. Don't care what others think!

ChurryBun · 09/10/2022 10:31

I don't really like Nike much. I wear adidas gazelles and new balance.

Skiingwithgin · 09/10/2022 12:02

I wear adidas gazelles and new balance too. 32 and I am quite “into” what I wear x

SommerTen · 09/10/2022 12:52

I've got white Nike AF1s with dark red ticks; & 2 pairs of Adidas Superstars- one pair white with rose gold stripes & one pair white with patent black stripes & platform soles which I like for a bit of extra height!
I'm 46 and care about looking fairly fashionable.
My trainers are all comfortable and I wear them with jeans and dresses.

dontgobaconmyheart · 09/10/2022 17:52

I'm 35 and probably wouldn't wear white Nike air force 1's (or any colour to be fair) now, nothing against them specifically, I just don't like that midi skirt/dress with white trainers look and feel it's been around a while so I'm tired of it and them in general.

Again, no idea if I am particularly in fashion and cannot claim to be a style icon of any sort but I generally wear New Balance - at the moment the 327's in the cream and olive green colour, Hoff trainers or my Adidas Retropy E5 in black for autumn winter ( I hate cleaning shoes). The only other trainers I own are some Nike white waffle one trainers with the leopard print tick but they rub horribly so I never wear them.

theshadeofgreen · 09/10/2022 18:01

@Skiingwithgin @SommerTen
Do the tongues on your adidas sit ok? My Stan smiths are weird and I'm not sure if it's a general adidas thing or not?

I don’t understand why some posters are chiming in with ‘I wear x but I don’t care what others think’ when the OP has specifically asked for current fashion advice???

LemonSwan · 10/10/2022 00:12

Well not exactly a fashion expert but my sister is.

She’s always wearing the chunky soled type white trainers. I don’t think the brand matters that much. It’s more the dimensions of the shoe.

Personally I prefer a more slimline basket shoe. I am mid 30s and it’s a bit more understated and retro to me. Personally a fan of puma. My last were a lovely vintage replica in a slightly off white cream leather rather than bright bright blue white. Really nice.

Would send a link but sadly there website is down!

LemonSwan · 10/10/2022 00:18

And ignore a 15 yo.

I have a pair of Isabelle Marants Becketts. Such a trainer of force that each shoe requires a separate shoe bag to shield it from the peasantry of the world.

Am pretty sure a 15yo would exclaim the same reaction as the branding is not recognisable.

Just have the shoes you like!

Londoner256 · 10/10/2022 02:32

@theshadeofgreen exactly the same problem with my Stan Smiths! And it isn’t an issue with any of my other adidas shoes I’ve had. The tongue is so long on the stans it rubs and chafes on the front of my ankle.
I think you’d be fine with the classic adidas styles like ‘ gazelle’

Nat6999 · 10/10/2022 02:35

I wear Adidas Superstars or Court trainers, good support & broad enough for my extra wide feet.

Limpshade · 10/10/2022 02:47

I think colourful New Balance are having a bit of a moment but I have large feet so they look like clown shoes on me 😀 The most flattering on my feet (size 8) are SuperGa or (current favourites) Lacoste which look good with most things. Both shoes make my feet look "rounder" and not so long. Check out Veja too.

SommerTen · 10/10/2022 07:30

@theshadeofgreen I find the tongues on the superstars to be ok

Me too and got really bad sores on a trip away

They were expensive too!

theshadeofgreen · 10/10/2022 08:24

@Londoner256 weird isn't it!! And it looks so odd on me

I have Puma "basket" shoes. Really comfy!

paintitallover · 10/10/2022 12:00

The trainers I always wear are not high fashion, or cheap unfortunately, but they're incredibly comfortable and last for ever. They come in various colours, and I've found them in the sale or reduced from time to time:

EmmaStone · 10/10/2022 12:42

I really like Nike AF1s on other people, but hated how they looked on me. I stuck with Adidas Stan Smiths. Lots of friends have Veja or Victoria trainers too.

thisplaceisweird · 10/10/2022 12:47

Try the Reebok Club C, comfiest trainers I have ever ever owned. Wore them for 12 hours straight the first wear and they were amazing. Very flattering and not overly trendy and 'young' like the AF1s but still very 'now'.
