Do they have to be Nike?

I'm a bit rubbish with fashion but want to be better.

I see everyone out and about in white trainers with things I'd usually have put heels with and am dying to happy to make the transition.

All of the 'cool' people to see seem to have chunky white Nike trainers - I love them look but do they have the be Nike to get the look right?

Is adidas acceptable with people who get fashion? Or am I stuck in the 00s?
Puma? Or is that 90s?

I'm mid 30s for context

Help please 🙏🏻

Liz Truss broke white trainers. I can’t unsee this

At least she didn't feel a need to wear a stiletto or high heel like so many female politicians and news journalists do. Not a fan of hers btw!

Peridot1 · 11/10/2022 08:23

Just thinking how great it is that women can now wear trainers as a fashion item or work wear rather than feeling they have to constantly wear heels. Podiatrists will be very happy although it may mean that women have less foot issues in the future so possibly not good for business!

I’m 58 and have a pair of white Fitflop trainers as I get plantar fasciitis so need to be careful. Not high fashion but good enough for me. I’m also eyeing up a pair of slip on leopard print vans. Love me a bit of leopard print! Does anyone know how Vans fit? I’ll need to put orthotic insoles in so need a bigger size anyway I think. I vaguely remember Vans are quite narrow.

sorry for hijack @theshadeofgreen!

@AquaticSewingMachine Damn girl! I think I just fell in love. I need all the details - these are a keeper.

Unless you are a fashion conscious 15 year old, just wear what you want brand/style wise. Nobody is looking at your feet. Personally I think white is a silly colour in autumn with mucky leaves everywhere... I favour navy blue (not) converse or leather boots now the weather has turned

Why do you nobody looks at other people’s footwear?

I look at other people’s footwear all the time. This morning I saw somebody in new trainers and thought to myself that the time has defo items come to throw my everyday trainers in the bin because they look so worn and they are ruining the clothes I’m wearing.

AquaticSewingMachine · 11/10/2022 09:25

@mrschocolatte here's the link, if you like! I decided my trainer wardrobe was definitely lacking a) a pair of NB b) a coloured pair so these addressed both.

i may be wearing Skechers today but that's strictly for knockabout and doesn't count

illiterato · 11/10/2022 09:36

@Peridot1 yes- as a mum of a preteen girl I’m delighted that heels are basically dying out. The things I rammed my feet into in my teens and twenties should be banned under the Geneva convention. Trainers are practical, fun and can look pretty smart in the right style. Loving the suggestions on here.

DietrichandDiMaggio · 10/10/2022 22:08

I couldn't tell the difference between any of the trainer brands. They fall into 2 categories- the really ugly ones, which look a bit silly off the sports field, or the ones that aren't ugly and what used to be called plimsolls/ gym shoes and are canvas shoes.

That doesn't make sense. There are lots of trainers e.g. Stan Smiths, superstars, AF1s, that neither look like trainers for playing sports in, nor are canvas pumps (which is what I would class Converse and Superga as, not trainers) and I assume are what the OP is looking for.

The examples posted on this thread are the "sporty" ones. They all look the same.

Stan Smiths and Supergas don't look 'sporty, they are just everyday trainers? Sporty are Nike or Asics.

More wishful thinking about heels ‘basically dying out’. You don’t like them, and that is fine, but you must see that loads of younger women wear them?

Some Supergas look like sneakers, and are quite nice. Stan Smith's don't and aren't. The examples posted on this thread look "sporty"

Well they are really just regular casual shoes these days to most other people.

illiterato · 11/10/2022 16:24

Honestly, no. Not just around and about. On a big night out, maybe, but not to work and not just out shopping or whatever. I think it's indisputable that heels are worn far less often that they were. When I was a student, we would all wear heels on a night out. I live in a university town and pretty much never see the female students wearing heels. Possibly it depends where you live. That said, I think it's just part and parcel of more relaxed dress trends coming in- for example, when I started working in the city in 1996, it was suits all round, ties for men and heels for women. Now hardly any men wear ties and all the women are in flats. In senior non-client facing roles in MNC hardly anyone wears suits now.

Snowpatrolsnowpatrol · 11/10/2022 17:16

I rarely see high heels either. On the rare occasion I do see them, it’s usually someone who is dressed in quite old fashioned clothes. I find heels very old fashioned looking these days and would give a second look to anyone wearing them.

In much the same way, when I started worked in an office in late 90’s/early 2000’s we all wore black trousers and a blouse and thought we looked professional or at least respectably dressed. I remember having four pairs of wide leg black trousers from River Island that I wore with heels. Nowadays I’d look like I was either dug up or in ‘90’s clothes’ if I wore them.

Other than that the RF wore them to QE’s funeral, if that counts? It doesn’t in my world tbh. I imagine they are worn for black tie events though as evening dresses are formal?

They might well be. They still look odd to me.

£22 boys junior addidas from sports direct and soo comfy

Do they have to be Nike?
Banana2079 · 11/10/2022 18:20

I wear heels most of the time (court shoes, stilettos) as they make me feel sexier

I was at a black tie event least week and most women were in high heels. Mine were only 3" Manolo Blahnik's - which is as high as I ever wear.

In general women in the office are starting to wear proper shoes and some high heels. The young lasses (and the not so young too) out on the town on a Friday and Saturday night are usually in vertiginous heels.

I wear ballet flats, low heeled ballet pumps and low heeled courts/ stilletos/ kitten heels most of the time as they're just prettier.

I like canvas sneakers/ lace ups, old style gym shoes. This sort of thing.

(Although I'm sure no one's interested)

I recently bought a pair of white Reebok hi-tops and all
My teenage daughters friends adore them & one has even invested in a pair

I think you are in a minority in that you dress to feel sexy most of the time.

sandytooth · 12/10/2022 06:44

The teen in my life tells me that yes its all about Nike. So I decided id better get something else so I don't look like im trying to be a trendy teen. Went for Adidas
