trainers and socks in winter!

I usually wear boots all through, but this time I would like to continue wearing my low converse and trainers on the more pleasant, dry days - I am thinking with my sport leggings and my ankle length combats. Is there a sort of warmer, or thermal trainer sock out there?

And do any of you still wear trainers in winter? If so, how do you deal with socks?

You probably want somewhat longer trousers and socks so there's no chilly ankle.

Skiingwithgin · 01/10/2022 01:50

I just wear trainers and trainer socks, never thought about a Thermal one. Just got on with it or if it was snowing then yes, winter boot and proper socks

HighlandPony · 01/10/2022 01:58

You can get some double layer ones but I just wear normal be the double layer ones ride down too much. But then I still wear flip flops in winter. I like the cold.

trilobiterevival · 01/10/2022 02:05

Thanks. I am the kind of idiot that will nip to the supermarket in winter wearing chunky socks and birks....and I don't currently own a vehicle Grin
I do feel the cold easily though, I am thinking of milder days when I go to yoga/gym, etc. Long length leggings or combats with big jumpers.
I have worn my lace up docs for 4 years and am a bit bored now, even though i love them!

I wear my converse all year round, I wear them with lounge trousers and with jeans , During the summer i wear them with trainer socks then during autumn and winter I wear them with ankle socks.

cannaethink · 01/10/2022 10:55

How about some wool trainer socks? There’s lots of thin merino ones about, and also if you search enough, some thicker more ‘woolly’ ones. EBay and Etsy had them last year but I’ve not looked this year yet…

Afterfire · 01/10/2022 11:13

Socks are really fashionable now, I don’t try and hide them I just wear the brightest weirdest ones I can find!

pawkins · 01/10/2022 11:25

Unless you have the waterproof winter fleeced ones, Converse don’t work in winter. There are two holes on the inside of them and they are made from material. They won’t work with rain, puddles, freezing temperatures and/or cold weather. Your feet will be cold and as a result you will be cold.
If you like the look maybe try brogues or chunky loafers and socks? That will achieve the same look without making you look like you can’t afford winter footwear and/or feel cold.

HighlandPony · 01/10/2022 11:41

You used to get cons wellies too btw. If I saw you in cons in winter I wouldn’t assume you couldn’t afford winter footwear COZ IM NOT A FUCKING JUDGEY BASTARD!
As for the cold, you’d probably get used to it, like me and my winter flip flops.

The outdoors shops usually have some low cut socks.

LeafHunter · 01/10/2022 12:07

I wear normal trainer socks, but I find converse aren’t very waterproof so I imagine if your feet got wet you’d get colder. Wool socks would be great.

Soggy Converse feet in November. I remember it well.

MinervaTerrathorn · 01/10/2022 12:16

I'm in proper merino socks, not trainer socks and full length jeans rather than ankle length. I can't stand cold ankles, I will be in boots soon.

I suppose the leather ones might be ok - but not white ones.

Some trainers are fine year round, especially if they're more towards the waterproof trail shoe end of the spectrum rather than mesh fabric or whatever.

trilobiterevival · 01/10/2022 12:23

Thank you for more ideas.

But....to the person who mentioned it - the fucks I would give about someone's opinion of my financial status due to wearing some cute converse on a mild winter's day are phenomenally low, lol.

I do love a colourful sock, have quite a collection. Just so bored with dark, heavy winter footwear and it's not even winter yet! I do imagine the weather will dictate as always. My fancy, early autumnal ideas will whither as the temps plummet Grin

Tell me about your winter flip flops!
I also have feet that put up with Arctic temperatures. I hate having to change to winter footwear.

DownToTheSeaAgain · 01/10/2022 12:49

I wear thick woolly walking socks with mine in the winter.

Daisy62 · 01/10/2022 14:13

These are warmer than trainee socks and come in a few colours.

DorritLittle · 01/10/2022 14:21

I wear trainers loads with normal socks in winter. Boots are nice though... you might fancy wearing some soon!

Fair enough. Odd shoe choice for winter unless you live in a warm country though. Might not be what you want h too hear but there isn’t much difference between them and wearing sliders and socks in the rain and the look you are trying to attain might not be the look you achieve...

TitoMojito · 01/10/2022 17:19

I wear trainers all the time, in any weather in any season.

i want to keep wearing trainers too as I’m always rushing around. Which ones are waterproof? I bought leather converse V last year but wore them one day this week and didn’t like looking down at them at all. Really interested to find nicer looking waterproof/shower resistant ones though!

2pinkginsplease · 01/10/2022 17:26

I wear my converse in rain, hail and shine, never had soggy feet.

(obviously don’t wear them in the snow )

and as it goes, you could probably get cheaper boots than the price of converse so it has nowt to do with cost and all to do with comfort.

Sonnex · 01/10/2022 17:29

I wear trainers and socks in winter with trousers and longer socks. I spray them with waterproofing spray to make them a bit water resistant.

DietrichandDiMaggio · 02/10/2022 00:08

I don't understand why anyone would think you couldn't wear trainers in winter - plenty of boys/men only ever wear trainers and wouldn't think of wearing boots.
