Socks that are comfy and actually last (yes, I know it's boring)

Where do you buy your socks? Now that we've reached sock season, I've noticed that most of mine are worn through the sole or have a toe poking out. I have very long big toes and often poke holes in my socks. I keep looking at nicer, thicker socks, but then recoil at the price and scurry back to M&S or h&m for more crap stuff.

I also don't want sock with pastel floral patterns or cutesy woodland creatures - although I do like bright colours and stripes so they don't need to be all black. We live in an old house so something a bit thicker with lots of natural fibres would be good.

What socks have lasted well for you?

My BAM socks wore through pretty quickly so I won't try them again. Think I'll try men's socks from M&S as mentioned above.

Benetton

Luredbyapomegranate · 29/09/2022 00:25

Community clothing. Immensely hard wearing. Nicely stripy. Very comfortable. UK and sustainably made, and provide jobs in areas that really need them. Not too expensive for all that.

XingMing · 29/09/2022 00:28

Corrymoor Sportsman mohair. Yes, spendy, but the warmest and hardest wearing socks a person can buy. They don't ever smell so don't need daily washing. I buy two or three pairs each year and they last about seven years. They also make awesome gifts for the men in your life. Trust me, and buy one pair. I do not work for them but they farm about 50 miles from here and are a small company.

DotBall · 29/09/2022 00:31

wool rich socks

I bought some of these recently and they are fabulous - soft and warm as well as cheap. I got some cat ones but they also come in a striped version. Much better quality than the price would suggest.

I knit my own. It's easy once you know how and you can choose the pattern, style, colour and type of yarn you want!

I love Calvin Klein socks from TK MAXX. They are not very thick but so comfy .

thinkfast · 29/09/2022 00:41

Thought socks are excellent. Although one of my 4 pairs of thought socks has now worn through.

crispinglovershighkick · 29/09/2022 01:02

Corrymoor for me too, but Gentletop or Swift. Dh likes the Devon Stripe. They seem to prevent blisters and sweaty feet too.

HanleyGirl123 · 29/09/2022 07:41

BAM socks here too. They are wonderful and durable, I have many pairs. I ask for BAM socks and chocolates every year for Christmas 😁
I have also given them as presents (male and female) and gets lots of great feedback.

I second BAM socks - they make me so happy, I feel like my feet are being hugged when I wear them. For some reason they send me a free pair every so often - and I love them for it!!

This is exactly how I describe my BAM socks too. Mine have lasted well as well although they do take longer to dry than regular socks.

Girlintheframe · 29/09/2022 08:00

Best trainers socks I've had are under armour. I wear them all the time. I have the trainer ones and the regular ones

Same!

ErrolTheDragon · 29/09/2022 08:05

Most of the socks I wear a lot now are bridgedales of various types. Coolmax either alone in summer or under my merino comfort walking socks, or their Dingle socks which are two-pack cotton/nylon mix which are very comfortable - got a few pairs in multi buy offers at one of the outdoor shops.

ChilliPB · 29/09/2022 08:06

Genevieve Sweeney socks!

I found Seasalt socks weirdly tight after a few washes. My Hobbs socks are great

Seasalt socks don’t last either. They get holes.in them very quickly.

Notajogger · 29/09/2022 08:15

I have the same feet as you, and rate People Tree socks. Good size, not naff patterns and last well.

I also get the tight thing with Seasalt.
I am a size five and a half and I often get men’s ones as I hate tight socks.
For a chunkier sock I have some from Gudrun Sjöden that are towelling inside, great for walking and round the house. I bought them over fifteen years ago and they are only now looking threadbare on the soles. They didn’t shrink but I find most socks do, even though I don’t tumble dry them and have a gentle washing machine.

LadyLapsang · 29/09/2022 08:44

I love Falke socks but they are usually so expensive, however pre-lockdown my local TK Maxx had lots and I bought about 20 pairs at about 3.00 each - instead of 20.00 plus.

SunnySomer · 29/09/2022 08:48

John Lewis men’s (merino? Lambs? I can’t remember) wool socks I have for years and years (over 10!), wear all the time. Plain colours eg navy, red, black. They’re warm and durable. All bamboo socks get holes at toes and heels really fast.

Pigtailsandall · 29/09/2022 09:13

Great, thank you all for taking the time to answer. Seems like bamboo docks arent for me, despite the cosiness, if they wear out fast. Community clothing and free people are a good shout, I'd like to support ethical brands. I'll check out others which are new to me.

I have a TK maxx close by do I'll swing by today to check it out. Never considered them for socks, oddly.

Glassworks London have thicker ankle socks in several colours, that look woolly (not expensive so presumably not real wool). Not sure how they wear, as I’ve only had mine for one winter/spring so far.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 29/09/2022 09:42

Happy socks

PlatinumBrunette · 29/09/2022 09:54

The best socks I have were actually bought in Germany, so no help here. After 10 years though, they’re wearing out.
Thank you for the BAM socks tip, I’m sold, purely because of their names! Just need to try to find ones that aren’t ‘standard’ sized for my big feet.

OP I can cautiously recommend Next for socks. And also Deichmann sometimes have some good deals.

CaveMum · 29/09/2022 10:02

My Fat Face socks lasted ages - almost 3 years since I bought them and there only just starting to look sorry for themselves! Granted I don’t wear them daily - I mostly wear dresses at work so am either in tights or bare legs - but they do get good use at weekends or on cold days when I bung a pair on over my tights when wearing boots!
