leather gloves - does this sound right to you?

dh bought me a pair of beautiful (and quite expensive) leather gloves for my birthday

they were the right size and fit beautifully snugly when he brought them home for me

2 weeks later they were too big and now they are hanging from my hands - it feels like having a couple of bags on my hands; they are certainly not safe to drive in. They don't look smart at all, they look baggy and crumpled.

I just went down to the shop to see if they had any smaller ones in the sale; the woman said to me "Oh yes they do stretch, the leather is so soft"

however now I have come out of the shop I am thinking this can't be right? Is this some code that only Stylish Rich people know to ensure that oiks like me don't have nice gloves?

Surely if the gloves are going to stretch so much and they are aware of that (and bearing in mind that this is one of those lovely independent little shops and not a massive dept store) they should warn customers to buy a smaller size? Would it be reasonable to go back in and complain or is this just some unspoken female coded knowledge that I was not privy to?

Anyway if it was such knowledge shouldn't they have shared it with a bloke buying a present?

no believe me I know all about leather gloves

they are very cheap leather that hasnt been stretched properly

what brand were they? [worried]

Cappuccino · 24/01/2008 12:20

I honestly don't know

most of their gloves were Dents but I don't know about this particular pair

Cappuccino · 24/01/2008 12:20

so obv you think it is okay to take them back and stamp my feeble foot then?

OP posts:
TheHonEnid · 24/01/2008 12:21

yes

TheHonEnid · 24/01/2008 12:22

how much were they? [nosey]

kindersurprise · 24/01/2008 12:24

I have had a pair of leather gloves for about 5 years and they still fit perfectly. They are from a German company, Roeckl. Don't know if they are available in UK but they are fab.

kindersurprise · 24/01/2008 12:25

Yes, I would take them back

Cappuccino · 24/01/2008 12:25

[averts eyes]

well I think they were expensive but I realise that is relative

they were £55 which makes them the most expensive item of clothing I own, including shoes

TheHonEnid · 24/01/2008 12:30

That is very expensive. Sorry but I would think they probably cost the company £4 or so from a chinese factory.

TheHonEnid · 24/01/2008 12:30

buy dents next time they are pretty good (made in china again but much better quality control)

Cappuccino · 24/01/2008 12:32

okay will go down tomorrow and demand Dents

thank you Glove Csar

That is a lot of money to pay for gloves that you cannot wear.

Mine are similar to these ones

Budcat · 24/01/2008 14:11

At that price I would go back. My beautiful 20 pound pair from Debenhams have not stretched - although will watch them closely now!

Cappuccino · 24/01/2008 14:12

I would never have spent that much tbh

but dh likes to Do Presents

I have a couple of pairs - a £50 pair from House of Fraser and £15 pair from Dorothy Perkins. Neither have stretched and both fit the same as they did when brand new.

BettySpaghetti · 24/01/2008 14:16

I have some (very cheap in comparison) leather gloves that still fit perfectly after 3 years so I would be very miffed if I had a £55 pair that stretched.

I agree that you should take them back

TheHonEnid · 24/01/2008 14:16

Good quality unlined gloves WILL stretch a bit if the leather is fine and soft. But this should happen over time and certainly not to the extent that capps have.

TheHonEnid · 24/01/2008 14:17

conversely very cheap leather gloves often do not stretch, especially when lined, as the leather doesnt give at all. If you can get a cheap pair of leather gloves that fit well, you have been lucky.

Cappuccino · 24/01/2008 14:18

they are lined

that doesn't make a difference right?

OP posts:
TheHonEnid · 24/01/2008 14:19

no that means they are super crap

TheHonEnid · 24/01/2008 14:19

please please find out the brand for me

Cappuccino · 24/01/2008 14:20

is that a technical term? I will make sure to drop it into the conversation when I go in
