Greasy hair help needed

dontdarepokethebear · 18/09/2022 08:17

DD is soon to turn 14 and thanks to the hormones, her long, fine hair has become very greasy. It is really getting her down.

We're at a loss how to improve it. She washes it daily. If she washes her hair in the morning it is greasy by the end of the day. More often, due to timings she washes it at night but by the morning it greasy again, so she uses volumes of dry shampoo on it.

She has tried oil control shampoo but the only impact seems to be drying out the ends of her hair.

If she uses conditioner, it's only on the ends.

Can anyone suggest products she can use to improve it?

Do silk pillowcases work?

I thought about getting her a heated brush or curling wand for her birthday so she style it out.

Any suggestions/recommendations would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Dry shampoo in her bag to use at lunchtime. I have this type of hair and while off on maternity leave for a year I tried to "train" it - went days without washing it, feeling disgusting, hiding indoors. Made absolutely no difference at all - wasted a year of my life feeling dirty.
I do find that trying it up all day helps and applying a tonne of dry shampoo before bed can give me an extra half a day if I'm not going anywhere the following day, but never had 2 full days without needing to wash.

bootseason · 18/09/2022 14:47

I've got fine greasy hair too - I'd cut it and get her a drying brush, they do help.

dontdarepokethebear · 18/09/2022 16:34

Thank you, thank you so much for all the recommendations.

Quite a few options to try. I'm going to start with getting her the bar shampoo and cutting down on washing.

She's not a vain teenager, isn't really fussed about clothes and isn't into make-up but this just gets her down. She wishes she had thick, clean, glossy hair 'like everyone else'. The joys of growing up!

I also agree that washing less often makes no difference besides looking horrible and giving me itchy irritate scalp.
Kerastase Bain Divalent extends the time before washing for me. And tell her to use dry shampoo straight on clean hair - works way better than trying to use it when hair is already greasy.

Also I find that eating high fat foods makes a noticeable difference - so if she likes deepfried foods, nuts, avocado etc, she could try to cut down a little and see if it helps.

@Justkoko
thr green apple one.

"I'm going to start with getting her the bar shampoo and cutting down on washing."

FFS. Those of us who suffer from this have explained to you that it makes no difference when the cause is hormonal! You're just going to make her suffer.

Bangkokbaby · 18/09/2022 19:35

Yes, not washing as often has no affect for many of us! I find it's usually suggested by people who don't have issues with genuinely greasy hair and skin.
Please don't push her down this route, it will only make her feel worse!

clowerina · 18/09/2022 19:37

Stretch it out a day or two longer. Do co-washing in between washes (google it). Use dry shampoo between washes - it makes such a difference.

DelilahBucket · 18/09/2022 19:38

Switch to a no silicone shampoo and conditioner and she needs to be conditioning the ends only.

cherrypiepie · 18/09/2022 20:02

I have to wash mine daily fine and greasy and limp and thin. It was awful as a teen as skin is extra greasy.

Grow out fringe if she has one. Wash in the morning and contrition the end only. If it fine it should dry in Minutes.
Try an Argan oil in the ends only and no conditioner.

Kristen Ess from boot "the one" has been really good. The mousse is quite drying which helps.

My Fine limp hair doesn't curl well. The revlon one step has been awesome if you did want a heat styler.

Currently using Aldi olaplex fake which is great.

Dry shampoo just makes my hair feel dirty.

Had past success with the tresemme two in one.

cherrypiepie · 18/09/2022 20:09

Going agains the grain to have it cut short but I found it better longer as the oil has somewhere to distribute to.

I has fringe and that is a big mistake as it get grease has got to the end after a few hours and looks limp and greasy.

It's horrible fine hair.

cherrypiepie · 18/09/2022 20:09

It horrible having fine hair! Sorry I'm quite emotive in this!

Newmum110 · 18/09/2022 20:16

Dry shampoo is the only thing that stops me having to wash my hair everyday, I apply it after washing and drying my hair & it makes mine last way longer, I also give it a blast before tying it up. I know some people hate dry shampoo but it really is the only thing that works for me.

BakedBeeeen · 18/09/2022 20:19

I feel her pain OP. I have fine oily hair and I was constantly buying products to make it thick to no avail!! The best thing I did was accepted that I couldn’t change my hair, and it’s better to work with what you’ve got. (This took decades to realise!)

Actually the only thing that made a difference was when I was pregnant and my skin and hair became much less oily due to hormones and I could go 3 days without washing it. Greasy hair came back with a vengeance when no longer pregnant though, which proved to me that it was nothing to do with how often I washed it.

A shorter sharp cut (eg bob) is much better than long wispy hair, as it makes it look less fine and flat which the greasiness accentuates. I also echo PP’s comments that the more you play and flick your hair around, the more it stimulates the oil production, so to have hair up helps a lot.

KatharinaRosalie · 18/09/2022 20:24

No please don't tell her to wash less. She does not want to be known as the girl with greasy hair. If the hair is dirty, it should be washed and as many of us have said, running around like you have a pack of butter smeared on your head makes no difference.

yellowgecko · 18/09/2022 20:26

Another one with greasy hair / oily skin 🙋‍♀️
Ideally I'd wash in the morning, then the following night (day and a half). Summer nights are hell - really sweaty.

  • washing less often didn't help. Pregnancy did!! (Absolutely not advocating that for your teen! 😬) then it got crap again.
  • Rotating shampoos helps, so hair doesn't get used to one type
  • Wella invigo nutri-rich & Kerastace Bain divalent have worked for me. No silicone shampoos
  • 1 litre hot water (boil a kettle and cool it), fresh squeezed lemon juice and a sprig of thyme better than conditioner, leaves hair soft and smells amazing
  • tying hair up on day one and having it down day 2 makes it last longer; the more I touch it the greasier it gets so having it up out of the way I can ignore it
  • dyeing it dries the roots / grease
  • I use hairspray rather than mousse; I find hair serum literally makes it drip with grease by the end of the day as well

I'm sure it's linked to skin. People I know with dry skin / no spots can go days without hair washing. Bastards 😭

It will get better. She's not alone!!! Flowers

Stop washing it daily.

I had greasy hair for years, I would wash it in the morning and it would be greasy by the end of the afternoon. Washing it strips it if it’s natural oils, which it then ramps up production to replace. I broke the cycle by not washing it for a week (it was grim, but also lockdown so I just hid indoors), I now wash it twice a week. Dry shampoo is also your friend here! I now use the same products I did before, just less often!

Bingo with the very first post. 🙄

If you have greasy hair that needs washing daily - check your thyroid!

Dancinginthebasement91 · 18/09/2022 20:33

I've got fine, greasy hair. Not washing daily is not going to help, its just distressing because the hair feels awful. Its sad but if she manages to find a shampoo that helps, it won't last beyond a second bottle. Saying that, Vosene might be quite good for a couple of bottles. Also, try something for dry hair, just once and see what happens, sometimes greasy hair shampoo makes hair worse. Good luck, hopefully she'll be the one to intent something amazing. Oh, colouring really does help.

allypallys · 18/09/2022 20:34

All of the above, and a good clarifying shampoo. Remind her not to touch it often or run her hands through it. I don't think there are any products that can truly stop this, dry shampoo can mask it. Get her practicing some nice hair up looks. Sadly I think she just needs to ride it out.

chocolateoranges33 · 18/09/2022 20:35

I've got incredibly fine hair that gets greasy quickly. I have always washed it daily - leaving it 2/3 days did not improve it no matter how long I tried.

I will recommend your dd washes it every morning rather than at night as it means it will hopefully not greasy until the end of the day as it starts off fresh first thing. It is harder to do this as you have to get up earlier, but it is worth it.

If I have to wash mine at night, it's normally slightly greasy by morning as I've slept on it for 8 hours which encourages the oil production as its in constant contact with my pillow and gets greaser as the day goes on.

I use herbal essences silicone & sulphate free shampoo & conditioner (the clear ones) and thoroughly wash and rinse my scalp and only condition the ends of my hair - I don't put it anywhere near my scalp.

People who don't have fine hair really don't understand how quickly it gets greasy (there's not enough hair to absorp the normal oil production) and if does need to be washed every morning.

I'm hoping as I get older it will dry out but I'm in my 40s now and it's not happened so far!

MadeInChorley · 18/09/2022 20:35

I have very greasy hair and have to wash daily. I totally agree with the PPs who said that leaving it unwashed in the hope the scalp will rebalance and become less oily made absolutely no difference - I just ended up with hair you could fry chips in and an itchy scaly scalp.

Over the years I tried several times to leave it a week without washing - scraping it back when backpacking, during lockdown etc - and never made a difference. It’s hormonal. So back to daily washing, because I had a professional client facing job and couldn’t have lank, oily hair? And people do notice “dirty” hair, so had to wash it. I found Aveda Rosemary and Mint shampoos and conditioner on the ends worked best for me and smell divine, but they are £££. Limit all other products.

bambi1132 · 18/09/2022 20:36

Listen to the greasy hair people on this thread! I am one of them and I wash my hair daily and it's absolutely fine, why on earth would I walk around with greasy dirty hair.
She also needs to stop using dry shampoo because it clogs your pores.
Find a natural shampoo and wash daily.

MadeInChorley · 18/09/2022 20:39

KatharinaRosalie · 18/09/2022 20:24

No please don't tell her to wash less. She does not want to be known as the girl with greasy hair. If the hair is dirty, it should be washed and as many of us have said, running around like you have a pack of butter smeared on your head makes no difference.

This is right.

Hercisback · 18/09/2022 20:55

It's clear there are two types of fine and greasy hair. The fine and greasy hair I have (with dryish face skin) that was being over washed. Or the fine and greasy hair (usually with oily face skin) that needs a lifetime of daily washing.
You need to find out what type she has first.

Squiz81 · 18/09/2022 20:58

Fine hair gets greasy quickly. It makes no difference if you don’t wash it every day I’m afraid. It may work for thicker hair but it doesn’t on fine hair. I wash every morning and use Revolution salicylic shampoo, it’s still looks good by the end of the day.
