OK am I extravagant?

I tell myself you get what you pay for and should use what you like and what suits you but these days I seem to like high end everything as follows:

Liz Earle cleanser, toner and moisturiser
Wella shampoo and conditioner or Liz Earle
Clinique foundation, lipstick and perfume
Clinique or Estee Lauder perfume

I have very sensitive skin and eczema so need to be careful what I use. I use basic body creams and get that on prescription.

I work full time and earn a decent wage but still worry about spending a lot in these times.

Well it depends what you can afford surely?

slipperfsce · 17/09/2022 21:03

I buy higher end products but have lowered my budget eg a £40 moisturiser instead of a £60 one, I prefer to cut back in other areas.

TrafficBlocking · 17/09/2022 21:06

No I dont think so because I'm the same! If you can afford it you buy what you want?!

PileofLogs · 17/09/2022 21:06

Tend to think that if you have found products that work for you, it works out cheaper to use them than to shop around and end up with a lot of stuff you don’t like and just use half of.

Augend23 · 17/09/2022 21:08

Well that sounds extravagant to me because I use pantene shampoo and conditioner, Rimmel lipstick, no cleanser or toner.

I do have a fairly nice moisturiser but it was massively reduced, I think to about £8. Perfume about £30 for 50ml.

But is there anything wrong with extravagance? Life is for living.

I could manage perfectly well without my expensive gym membership or my cleaner. Those are extravagances. But I enjoy them very much. They don't mean I can't afford to pay my bills, they don't mean I can't save for a rainy day. So I enjoy them!

carefullycourageous · 17/09/2022 21:11

I don't think these products are worth the money, but it is up to you! I do consider that extravagent, personally.

Zeeza · 17/09/2022 21:19

Are you able to meet your financial obligations? Do you have an emergency fund? Are you extravagant in every area? I spend a lot on skincare and clothes, but I can afford it and I cut back on other areas like eating out or regular new cars.

Everything is about moderation, even saving and being responsible. Sometimes you need to treat yourself.

KylieCharlene · 17/09/2022 21:20

Using the best stuff I can afford makes me feel better about myself and boosts my self-esteem.
My personal idea of what is expensive and luxurious will be wildly different than most people's I'm guessing.
I use Maui shampoo and conditioner
Love Garnier face products
Most of my make up is L'Oreal.

BananaBling · 17/09/2022 21:27

You've been asking this question in various forms for years and years now. You know it's perfectly ok to buy what you want - please consider some counselling as you've stressed over this for eons now

Goldunicorn · 17/09/2022 21:27

It’s all relative …. Personally I’ve changed out the Liz Earle cleanser for the Aldi dupe and can’t tell the difference, other end of the scale Clinique and Estee Lauder certainly aren’t the most expensive brands out there now either.

But your budget, your life ….. if you were struggling to pay bills & feed the family, yes it’d be extremely extravagant bordering on irresponsible….. but if you’ve got the budget, and no-ones starving, fair enough.

theoriginalteletubby · 17/09/2022 21:31

Buy what you like and can afford is my motto. I use Clarins everything skincare these days. I have had spells of switching to No7 through sheer laziness and not being able to be bothered to drive to a Clarins counter.

I live a fairly quiet life and I don't mind the expense tbh. Is it worth 6 x the price of something else? Probably not .....but I like it and I like the service I receive at the Clarins counter.

I've used Aveda hair stuff for decades, it really isn't that expensive when you buy the 1 litre bottles.

WildfellAnne · 17/09/2022 21:31

Well, it’s up to you. I think it’s wasteful more than extravagant-that’s because I tend to think they definitely aren’t worth the money and it’s all a clever marketing ploy. But if you like the products, can afford them and feel good about using them, that’s worth something in itself.

dmask · 17/09/2022 21:35

Buy and use what you want! I don’t think Liz E is particularly high end, or Clinique etc., but if it makes you feel better then what’s the problem? some spend 50p on a shampoo, some spend £50. Horses for courses, it’s only you spending and enjoying the products so not sure why you care about what others who are not buying or using your products think?

speakout · 17/09/2022 21:39

We are free to spend as we like- if we can afford it then why not.
I personally don't consider these products good value.
I was given a grant which paid for expensive skin care products and regular facials for 9 months or so. My skin did improve but I think it was more to do with a regular regime than the products themselves.
I could afford to buy the fancy products, but choose not to.
I buy a range of low cost products, make some of my own masks and scrubs with food items, a fraction of the cost and my skin is just if not more healthy.
Expensive skin products contain just as many synthetic chemicals as cheaper brands. Things like edible oils, honey, oatmeal, shea butter are amazing.

mondaytosunday · 17/09/2022 22:06

Liz Earle is fairly middle of the road price wise I'd have thought. It's not like you are buying Crème de la Mer.

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 17/09/2022 22:54

I switched out to some Inkey List skincare during lockdown when counters were closed, and have stayed with them instead of products costing a lot more - they are fab. Otherwise I buy what I like and suits me, provided I can afford it. I’m sure some people would think me massively extravagant!

shewhomustbeEbayed · 18/09/2022 11:53

I like nice things like Elemis cleansing balm but but on ebay as cheaper.

TabithaTittlemouse · 18/09/2022 12:07

None of those are particularly extravagant.
Some people might prefer Dior , some might prefer Primark. If you like them keep using them.

Why are you questioning it?

Dannifaye · 18/09/2022 13:11

I have sensitive skin so spend more on make up and skincare. I’d rather not irritate my skin and spend the extra!

Appleblum · 18/09/2022 13:55

These aren't extravagant brands. They are normal counter brands. Extravagant would be La Mer or cle de peau.

NCFT0922 · 18/09/2022 13:57

I think they’re fairly average products. Definitely not extravagant. If you can’t afford them, buy cheaper. If you can, carry on.

Batshittery · 18/09/2022 13:59

No, not extravagant. They may seem high end brands to some, but not to others.
If you can afford them, what's the problem?

blebbleb · 18/09/2022 13:59

I personally find that extravagant, and don't think it's worth the money. I use cheap brands and I have good skin, but if it works for you and you can afford it I don't see the issue.

DillDanding · 18/09/2022 14:00

Not remotely extravagant unless you can’t afford them 🥴

SuffolkUnicorn · 18/09/2022 14:00

I use a mix of Liz earle cleansers and scrubs Estée Lauder moisturiser and foundation Rene furterer shampoo and soap and glory shower gel I buy what works for me
