Time to Chuck my summer scarves?

Bodice · 08/09/2022 19:36

I just went to do a bit of a clear out and have a huge drawer dedicated to a rather large collection of summer scarves.
It has just occurred to me that I haven’t touched them for over a year. Are they done now? Do I just get rid. Feels so wrong. Some were quite expensive. But when I put them on I just think of my 2013 baby mummy days with skinny jeans, Breton top and long cardigan mosying about with my bugaboo pram and firstborn.

By summer I mean those light weight patterned ones.

I didn't know summer scarves was a thing!

Whatevergetsyouthroughthenight · 08/09/2022 19:39

I haven’t touched mine this year either but that’s because we’ve had a massive heatwave. I suspect that I will need them next summer. If we have another then maybe time to get rid of them.

sort of thing: still in the shops but is it just a bit noughtie?

I used to have loads of scarfs like this, but they do remind me of the early baby years.

They were also a form of security blanket for hiding my tummy after pregnancy Blush

carefullycourageous · 08/09/2022 19:43

A scarf simply cannot be 'noughties' given how classic a good scarf is. I would rationalise if I had a lot of them but keep the ones I liked.

If you have that, I'd love it!

TwoMonthsOff · 08/09/2022 19:45

Keep the scarves - they don’t take up any room and lovely when you have an itchy wool jumper on this winter
but if you really don’t want then charity shop them

TwoMonthsOff · 08/09/2022 19:45

@EmmaH2022
that was my thought too

Bodice · 08/09/2022 19:45

I don’t have that actual one lol. But quite a few like it. Trouble is I still have my mum tum. Haven’t managed to lose that.

I've not worn any for about a year, and wonder if they are out of fashion now.

GingerPigz · 08/09/2022 19:47

Good grief - no! Don't get rid of them... so versatile. Maybe thin them out but they don't take up much room and will be back in fashion before you know it (I still wear mine but am not a dedicated follower of fashion)

Bodice · 08/09/2022 19:51

Perhaps I will bag them up and put them in the loft. Baby steps.

@Bodice you described that noughties look so well, brought back memories 😅
Agreed, very dated now - the whole scarf thing done to death. But as another poster said, they are bound to come back so keep them!

MissHavishamsMouldyOldCake · 08/09/2022 19:58

They can be folded up and stored into a tiny little bag. I'd be inclined to keep the decent ones. You might be glad to revisit them in ten years' time.

fernz · 08/09/2022 20:05

I love scarves like that, never in the summer though unless it's unusually cold. This year especially it's been way too hot. Can't wait for scarf weather!

Sickoffamilydrama · 08/09/2022 20:48

Keep some of them.

They are great for days that have a little bit of chill but not full blown scarf weather.

We went on holiday recently and I found a scarf really useful for when DS got cold in 29c, 80% humidity at night when we were out.

You can always go full on retro go back to the 90s and wear as a top!

Celeryfavour · 08/09/2022 20:53

How can scarves be out of fashion?

TheOGCCL · 08/09/2022 20:55

I agree they don't feel current (fashion is too minimalist at the moment) but agree with a PP that the heatwave is maybe part of the reason.

I wouldn't chuck them all out as they can be useful under a coat or jacket, I quite like layering lighter scarves with heavier ones.

Potentially you might be able to find more 'modern' ways to wear them too, lots of videos on YouTube. I think them just hanging there are what gives the old fashioned look.

TwoMonthsOff · 08/09/2022 21:16

I’ve got a silk Alexander McQueen skull one and I adore it……white with black print - I am never parting with it and it was a present too…..scarves are lovely I think anyway

TwoMonthsOff · 08/09/2022 21:19

I know that is very early 2000’s but I don’t care it means a lot to me ❤️

SomethingFast · 08/09/2022 21:26

I’d keep them on the basis that they will come back into fashion. But I’m probably not the best person to advise as I’ve still got 1980s clothes (regularly ‘borrowed’ by teen dd…).

that's an iconic piece of 00s fashion. You'd be mad to get rid of it.

AndSoFinally · 08/09/2022 21:43

They double up as sarongs and are very useful for the evenings on holiday. They don't take up much room. I'd keep them

Bodice · 08/09/2022 21:46

celeryfavour let me be clear I am specifically referring to lightweight one that you tend to wear with summer clothes. Not chunky winter scarves.
