Cost of living - Cutting back on hair/beauty

BeachTree · 01/09/2022 19:52

I'm considering cutting back on my 8 weekly hair cut and colour and trying to stretch it out a bit ( or a big bit ,yikes). Beauty treatments might need to go all together :( Is anyone else stripping back on these things too with the current shambles? I am useless at doing things myself ie nails etc... so I don't think that's an option sadly :(

My friend is a hair dresser and does my hair at her house. So I'll be keeping that.

I get my eyelashes done every 3 weeks and definitely keeping that. Nails the same. I could do them myself but I'm going to try and carry on going.

I think I'm going to just have to work overtime to pay for the extra gas and electric. Also going to get DH to cough up towards it as it's currently one of my bills 🙄

@BakersYeast No back peddling at all. Nothing in my second post contradicts my first, but was in response to a reasonable query about why post at all.

I do not accept that I implied that people people who "do this" have low self worth. My point is that there may be less expensive ways to make you feel good about yourself.

I guess the ta da was a bit flippant.

I can't believe what people spend to get their hair cut and coloured on mn. I was told on another post that £110 was reasonable. When I was short of money I found a cheap hairdresser who did a really good job. Needs must etc.

I was quoted £150. Local suburban salon in the Manchester suburbs.

No thanks! I've gone back to my old hairdresser at £25 a wet cut x 3 a year (grow it out in between cuts) and Olia box dye at £7 every 2 months. Total annual cost £117

latesummervibes · 04/09/2022 13:54

I found the perfect light golden brown hair dye (after many years of using the wrong stuff) and dye my own plus visiting the local salon which uses students for my hair cuts at £12 a time. It looks as good as when I paid £140 a time for cut and colour and I can do it more frequently too!

BatshitCrazyWoman · 04/09/2022 13:57

I've always done my own nails, they grow like weeds, a gel manicure or pedicure would last 10 days at most before looking absolutely shite 😂 No idea how a PP can have a gel pedicure last months !

Hair is highlighted and cut every 7 weeks. Botox a couple of times a year.

Everything else I do myself.

Things like facials and stuff I have as a treat AND when I have time, so about once a year!

KimmySchmitt · 04/09/2022 14:15

@1WomanWonder nonsense, you came on to feel superior and told us to stop placing so much value on this complete crap. You might not judge a woman who doesn't get her nails done every 3 weeks, but it sounds like you will judge a woman who does.

1WomanWonder · 04/09/2022 14:40

Sorry, what nonsense? Yes my point is entirely stop wasting money - the whole thread is about what the benefit of the treatment is compared to the cost in the climate of shrinking budgets. I'm good with that message.

I certainly don't believe anyone that has their nails done every 3 weeks is a "worse" person, but I think it is sad if someone persists in doing it when strapped for cash because they worry what other people will think of them.

Anyway. Tough crowd in the Style and Beauty pages! Maybe useful to hear another view every now and again though.

But you’re not thinking at all about why people might want this done. To you it’s all money ‘wasted’ that should have been better prioritised on something not so appearance based.

Well- for me I value the simple fact of someone else doing something nice for me, that I can enjoy. I’m a single mother. I don’t live with a partner and I work, a lot. My DD has additional needs. My ex is deeply unhelpful. When I get my nails done, it’s having my body taken care of by someone else for the best part of an hour, with an effect that lasts a few weeks. It’s me-time and being looked after and being made to feel a bit pretty, which I don’t get anywhere else because I’m just a hassled mum for the rest of general life. I get a hand massage with my manicure. It’s lovely. Gentle touch directed at me, not just me looking after someone else all the time.

There’s really nothing wrong with wanting to look a certain way anyway but for me it’s about the way it makes me feel. And now I have to give it up. And that’s a bit sad.

HermioneWeasley · 04/09/2022 14:47

I’m going to start dying my roots at home - I can’t justify £90 every 8 weeks for a cut and roots

raindon · 04/09/2022 14:48

I'm going to check ebay to see if I can get makeup cheaper. There often seem to be people selling charlotte tilbury and chantecaille cheaply on there, no idea how they do it, maybe it's old stock?

raindon · 04/09/2022 14:48

Oh and I'm considering getting my hair cut into a really short bob to save on shower time/hair drying costs.

That would be me... I buy the mystery boxes at sale time and usually get free gift too. Keep what i loke and bung the rest on ebay yo cover my own spend. All fresh stock ( can't comment on other sellers obviously)

Ah that makes sense. Clever thinking!

Your view is not illuminating

go on to the dog house and tell everyone dogs are shit and cats are better

go on the low carb Boot Camp thread and say that carbs are essential for a healthy diet

go on the MN local forum for Milton Keynes and suggest a restaurant in Runcorn

pointless

i haven’t even posted on this thread, but it’s very clear that people in S&B want to discuss and value…S&B

and that is your view, is it? It would be useful for US to hear YOUR view because we are all of a like mind?

At NO POINT did anyone say they were doing this because of what other people would think. You clearly have little understanding of why some people choose to do these things.

MissHavishamsMouldyOldCake · 04/09/2022 15:59

Just had my monthly pedicure. My feet are a delight once more.

1WomanWonder · 04/09/2022 16:20

Thank you to those that took the time to explain why the treatments etc mean more to you than the finished look. It is an area I am interested in and I have to say you have given me some food for thought.

It raises more questions for me but I will explore further elsewhere!

PS cats are better than dogs.

MissHavishamsMouldyOldCake · 04/09/2022 16:24

PS cats are better than dogs.

An outrageous statement to make!

BakersYeast · 04/09/2022 19:49

It's true though 😂

Caramac555 · 04/09/2022 20:01

No more cut and colour for me, usually costs £110. The mobile hairdresser will do a wet cut for 25, and the husband is willing to expand his skillset applying box dyes.

Nails I can do. Eyebrows are the challenge for me, no more HD maintenance appointments.

And I'm using up a load of products from glossy box type subscriptions.

AnnieSnap · 04/09/2022 21:21

Thankfully, I embraced my grey in about 2018. My hair is white at the front and sides, with a few dark hairs through at the back and I really like it. I also keep it very short. I have tried longer, but never feel like me with it. I seem to have a ‘short hair personality’. Consequently, I have it cut every 6 weeks, but I use a small local salon, run by a very talented woman. It cost £14. She cuts far better than the stylists at the two big flashy places I have been to in the past!

I used to enjoy a regular pedicure and liked to have my lashes and brows tinted (can’t wear mascara). Now, if they need doing, I’ll do them myself. I do worry that beauty businesses, like others, will go bust during the financial horrors. Still the Tories will have a new Leader tomorrow. They will sort things out 🙄

AnnieSnap · 04/09/2022 21:29

Oh yes and I have had Botox a few times. I liked it, but I’ve decided that, since money can only be spent once, I’d rather prioritise the money toward a trip away. I find it harder/impossible to be so sensible about clothes unless I absolutely have to.

FluffyFlower · 04/09/2022 21:40

Yes, a home salon here! Only a hair cut maybe 3 times a year (long hair), and I can take of the rest perfectly fine myself!

SaggyBlinders · 04/09/2022 23:09

Dogs are far better for your self worth than cats are.

Tigofigo · 04/09/2022 23:41

anotherscroller · 01/09/2022 20:53

Wow I had no idea people had their hair done so often!
i have mine done twice a year, sometimes three times. Now I understand why my hair is so bad haha

Same - get mine done about every 5/ 6 months but it does look pretty dreadful for the last two months. Costs £160 a go though so can't afford more often!

Apart from buying make up, face wash etc it's my only beauty expense though. I don't get my nails or waxing done.
