I'm tired of choosing what to wear every day.

I have decision fatigue.

I especially don't like choosing outfits for work, I want a uniform of sorts.

My goal? Same trousers, same shirts, same shoes. Every day. Obviously in multiples.

Has anyone else done this? Was it liberating, or boring? I long for "get up and go" mornings, rather than the angst of today, for example, when I couldn't find the right bra to wear under the shirt I had planned, and everything was confusing and stressful.

I admit, I probably don't fit into the S&B mindset, but I need your thoughts and experience! I don't want a capsule wardrobe, I want a work uniform. What should I choose?

There was a thread on here fairly recently where people were saying they wore the same clothes/uniform every day, changing the uniform every 4 months or so. I thought it sounded really appealing too, but fell at the first hurdle which was deciding what my uniform would be.

UnboxedThoughts · 26/08/2022 19:55

Ah, I need to find that thread!

I don't have clothes that all work with each other but I do have sets of clothes that I wear on certain days.
So I wear the same things on Mondays.

It makes it much easier. I just make sure everything can be washed together and after a few days wash my work clothes separately and hand them back on hangars!!!

I cycle to work so I keep trousers at work and take one of about 8 or 9 shirts with me. I had a uniform in my last place and it was so liberating not having to choose what to wear that I decided to make my own!

SomethingFast · 26/08/2022 20:46

I do this. I have two identical skirts and the same with trousers, and a couple of top styles each in several colours. Boring but low stress, I save the fun stuff for leisure time.

HouseofArchitect · 26/08/2022 20:49

Oh this is EXACTLY what I need!!!

Lallybroch · 26/08/2022 20:49

It would help if you said what type of work you did and the type of look you wanted. I worked in an office and used to go for a black 'core' with different coloured jackets. So in summer, black trousers, black cami and 100 stars kimono jackets. In winter, black trousers, black t-shirts/blouses and a coloured jacket.

HouseofArchitect · 26/08/2022 20:50

How do I decide what my uniform should be? 😳

SylviasMotherSaid · 26/08/2022 20:50

I had an interview today and one of the attractions was you got a uniform even though it was horrible it would mean all of my clothes were my own for my time . Don’t know if it would be strange to buy some absolute basics like sweatshirts etc for work and just wear them on a rotation as wear I currently work is dirty and not somewhere you want to wear nice clothes anyway . Be interested to hear if anyones done this

Walkingtheplank · 26/08/2022 20:51

I only wear a small number of clothes to work. I only have to go to the office twice a week and have worn just 3 dresses over the summer and the rest of the year I've worn just 4 pairs of trousers and six tops.
It takes no time to choose, which I do the night before.

marmiteloversunite · 26/08/2022 20:55

Can you decide on 5 outfits that are suitable for work and hang them together? Then get an outfit out before you go to bed so there is no decision making in the morning?

TokyoTen · 26/08/2022 20:59

I have 8 outfits for summer - everything for an outfit goes on the same hanger. I shower, simply pick the next hanger, dress and go. Whatever order they are in the wardrobe when I wash them they are worn in!

Tallulasdancingshoes · 26/08/2022 21:20

I do this. I’m a teacher and I don’t like wearing the same things at work as I do at home. I’m at school 3 days a week so just have a few pairs of trousers, tops and cardis that I wear on rotation. I think of it as my ‘school uniform’. I also have my ‘school shoes’ too.

Ridingladybugs · 26/08/2022 21:20

I am now in the office only 2-3 days a week. Similar to walkingtheplank I had 2 dresses and a skirt with 2 black t shirts. Wore the same each week. Intend to do this for winter as well.

if you like dresses I find they are easiest as require no additions and less thought!

Luredbyapomegranate · 26/08/2022 21:22

Loads of people do this.

Just Google capsule wardrobe and double if so you aren’t washing it all the time.

Bargoed · 26/08/2022 21:24

Start by having your colours done if you can - gives you an really clear idea of what your base/neutral colours should be. Then decide on the level of formal you need.
Loads of casual wardrobe ideas on Pinterest.

I have found a pair of trousers that fit me well and come in multiple colours and have them in every colour that is in my 'season' then I have 7 tops that all go with every pair of trousers and 3 pairs of shoes that also tone with everything. I have a couple of dresses that tone and go with the shoes and the cardis. Plus two work bags. No decisions and no stress

Valkirie · 26/08/2022 21:28

You could consider taking it even further by only wearing one dress! eu.wooland.com (See the 100 day challenge)

If I had a bit more spare cash at the moment I would be giving this a go - www.vettacapsule.com/collections/the-classic-capsule/All-Capsules

LionessesRules · 26/08/2022 21:37

Yes. I also don't belong on S&B tho!
I have 2 pairs of straight trousers (full length not ankle grazers). Black or grey depending on what was available when the previous pair ripped.
Teeshirts in various patterns for summer. Thin jumpers and cami tops for winter.
One pair of black shoes.
Pull first available top out of wardrobe at 6.30, and put it on. Sorted.

AnnaMagnani · 26/08/2022 21:38

Dresses! Never have to put an outfit together again.

Put on dress, done. Same shoes for every dress.

In winter dresses with long sleeves and add opaque black tights.

Literally no thought required and people will tell you they like your dress, as if you were actually skilled at fashion.

faretheewell · 26/08/2022 21:39

The least radical way is to list your outfits and wear them on a rotation.

You could store them on hangers with the correct underwear pegged onto the hanger and do a week in advance looking at the weather forecast.

Wow! That would be super organised! Nice project though.

WhatILoved · 26/08/2022 21:44

As someone that used to have to wear a uniform for work, I can't think of anything worse. However too much choice can cause stress, so reduce your clothes to only those worn regularly.

My son at 6 years old noticed his teacher used to wear the same thing on the same days each week, so there are people who must set out clothes like this.

Moonflower12 · 26/08/2022 21:46

@Tallulasdancingshoes

Same here. I mostly wear black stuff. Summer tops, autumn/ spring tops. Trousers and cardigans. Jumpers in the winter.
It just makes life so much easier.

YfenniChristie · 26/08/2022 21:48

I got tired of figuring out to wear to my smart-casual, so I put together a work uniform / capsule wardrobe of sorts. Mainly comprising of black and it all mixes and matches. It comprises of;

4 x plain tops with various sleeve length and neck style
1 x patterned blouse
1 x dress
1 x jumper
2 x pair of jeans
1 x skirt
One pair of flats and a pair of heels.

It takes the thinking out of what to wear. I've had it for a few years now and I haven't gotten bored of it (yet).

Xiaoxiong · 26/08/2022 21:51

DH has worn a uniform for the last 12 years and I realised it just eliminated a bit of the mental load, so I emulate him for days I commute - I have 10 blouses and shirts, about 6 pairs of jeans, and a few different flat shoes (trainers, chelsea boots, boat shoes) and just ring the changes with earrings, sometimes a bracelet, etc.

In the last week I have worn:
Solid black silk shirt, blue straight leg jeans, trainers
Black silk shirt with tiny white shamrocks, blue straight leg jeans, boat shoes
Blue linen shirt, white jeans, boat shoes

Etc etc

When I'm at home I dress quite differently but it helps to have a basic uniform for the office.
