Holy grail of shower gel

leftshark · 24/08/2022 15:55

After yet another disappointment and an excemza breakout, I need help finding my holy grail of body wash.

I have been trying This Works but this seems to have just killed my skin, I assume because of the essential oils. Generally, i have my skin, make up and hair brands sorted but even when I try the shower gel of my most loved brands I end up either allergic or just don’t like them. Can anyone help?

requirements are:

  • Something moisturising, rich and gentle, and not foamy

  • preferably a cream rather than a gel or oil

  • either non perfumed or a very bland perfume (I only really like almond, vanilla or similar scents in toiletries)

  • something that won’t break me out 😭 so hypoallergenic or as natural/organic as possible

  • nice packaging that will look nice in the bathroom

  • something feels a bit luxurious even for the every day

My usual brands for hair/face/makeup are a mish mash of Aveda, Drunk Elephant, Beauty Pie, Oaui, Clinique - so I’m not a clean-beauty only devotee but do like something mid-range and leaning on the vegan/organic side of things.

Anyone got any recommendations for simple, luxurious and non-ezxema inducing brands? I do use E45 when I’m having a flare up but want something that feels a bit more indulgent for the day to day. Price wise - can go up to mid/high end if needed - just desperate to find the right product.

thank you wise S&Bers!

Switch to bar soap? So much greener. A big block of French soap looks very chic in the shower!
Apologies if 100 pp have suggested this already.

Aveeno
MooGoo
Body Shop - Almond milk and honey range

ohidoliketobe · 26/08/2022 09:19

Cqmr on to say L'Occitaine almond oil like several PPs.
And if you know any tropic ambassadors their rinse and retreat body wash really does work. My grandad had horrific psoriasis and very sensitive skin from medication towards the end at that worked really well on him.

@Luredbyapomegranate DS seems to mostly be allergic to his own sweat, so it's a summer thing for him.

I'm a dusty pollen sort, so there's always something that irritates me.

DH is more stress related, but even he's been less itchy since taking the antihistamines. It's made such a huge difference. So much less faffing with creams and lotions.

LadyEloise1 · 26/08/2022 10:42

Check out a brand called Elave.
They do lots of products for those of us with sensitive skin.

Nettle is mean to be good for skin with eczema. I don't have eczema but I do like the feel of these products and the nettle shampoo made my hair feel lovely. I fist discovered their products at a farmers market...

Caurnie Soaps

My brother has eczema and swears by some of the lush stuff, there's an oat soap and he uses some dream cream too

PinotGroggio · 26/08/2022 11:18

Unfortunately anything fragranced is not going to be great for sensitive skin or eczema. You're best off sticking to brands like Cerave, Eucerin, Cetaphil or Aveeno, which do very gentle and unfragranced shower gels but don't exactly feel luxurious.

And "natural" doesn't necessarily mean good - there are plenty of natural ingredients that aren't good for your skin, just like there are plenty of non-natural ones that are!

isthismylifenow · 26/08/2022 11:27

I cant use anything scented, so my go to is Sanex 0% or the unscented Dove bar. Which has been a little difficult to find here I should add.....sigh. So I recently found just the plain glycerine bar and I quite like that too.

In winter when my skin is even more dry, I like to use the Bioderma shower gel. It is lightly scented, but I cant use it all the time.

I would love to be able to use Fenjal. But sadly that can't be...

Thanks - I am going to try it. Can’t quite believe I never thought of it,

Another vote for Sanex, though it doesn't score very high on looking classy in the bathroom, it's not terrible either. I like how they have a big range so you can try all the different types.

Deathraystare · 26/08/2022 16:37

I must admit I love the Fenjal shower cream (used to use the bath stuff when I had a bath). Now this is weird cos it smells very sweet and I hate sweet smells!

I don't have exzema (whoops, spelling!) but cannot use anything by Weleda as there must be something in the base ingredient of their products (tried cream, lotions, bath stuff) that iiritates my skin like mad which is a shame as they are always rated highly.

I recently bought this www.drbronner.co.uk/ I have heard good stuff about it. I have the almond and the lavender one too. I believe they also do a rose and an unscented one. It seems you can use it all over in many ways.

Beauty professional here.
Daughter has eczema, I use steroids for a long standing condition.
Very sensitive skin.

Try :
Tropics neroli cream wash
Tamaru balm on dry spots(I burnt my hand on an aga, it saved me)
Santex shower gel
Ellie Bache oat soap
Anything with manku honey (used for burns)

I tried a product from Holland and Barrett with turmeric. Excellent.

SilverLiningPlaybook · 29/08/2022 18:36

I second the Highland soap company. Their soaps don’t irritate my skin. I also use olive oil soap from France or Greece. Shower gels always irritate my skin and most soap does too. l’occitane does a verbena soap which doesn’t irritate my skin also.

Trinity69 · 29/08/2022 18:38

I use Senegence bodywash. It's got a very light fragrance, is moisturising, anti aging and luscious! It does foam a lot though which I see you don't want.

StinkerTroll · 29/08/2022 18:46

I've had eczema my whole life (45), shower gel that works for me (but doesn't tick your boxes - sorry) is radox, cheap and cheerful! What I have discovered in the last couple of years is child's farm organic moisturising cream is magnificent for eczema, go for the grapefruit and tea tree oil version (not the shea butter), the hand cream is great as well, I haven't tried the shower gels etc so I can't say. You can get it initially from any supermarket to try, I get it in shipping orders a couple of times a year from the website

Fluffmum · 29/08/2022 18:54

Seriously don’t use gel get a bar of goats milk soap it’s fantastic

JeanMarie · 29/08/2022 19:31

Soap or shower gel made with goats milk. There are loads to choose from....on Amazon or direct from farm shops. I've found them amazing for my very dry skin.

MrsPetty · 29/08/2022 19:47

I use Jason brand. They come in large bottles and there’s loads of variety. Most importantly they’re SLS free…important if you have excema.

Another Moo Goo fan here

PewterHeart · 29/08/2022 20:49

I agree with PP you can always get a nice looking dispenser bottle if the packaging isn’t to your taste. A friend of mine who suffers with eczema suggested the following:

• Epimax
• Dead Sea Salt
• a hemp based wash that they forgot the brand name of but they think is stocked by Holland & Barrett - if I find out the brand I’ll reply again!

I was coming on to recommend that almond shower oil, it's really lovely and not greasy.

I use L'Occitaine Almond too, you can get refills in a big pack. There's a slightly different version which comes in a dispensing bottle, I think it's a French version and it is easier to use. My skin is pretty sensitive and I've never had a problem with this.

stayathomer · 29/08/2022 21:07

Roche Posay, totally unperfumed but does a great job!!
