Silver grey hair, purple shampoo not covering

IamEarthymama · 22/08/2022 21:41

I have long covid, it has affected my hair, skin and nails.
I am taking vitamins, trying to eat well and keep hydrated.

My hair is natural gray, pixie cut and I use Fudge purple shampoo to keep a lilac-toned silver gray.
Since I had Covid the Fudge shampoo isn't covering my hair in the same way. There is yellowish tone to some strands of hair, especially in my fringe.

I use a 'normal' shampoo for first wash to cleanse any hair products then leave Fudge n for about 10 minutes. I have tried leaving it for longer, this makes no difference.
I have dead ends of my hair trimmed regularly so I don't think it's dead or very dry hair.
I have bought a hair mask, hair rejuvenating spray and heat protection spray today.
Any other suggestions please? Should I use a Silver gray permanent dye?
Leave it au naturel?

( Spell gray as grey? 😉🦻🏻)

Have you asked your hairdresser what they think?
Could it be sun damaged or heat damaged to make it yellowy?
Not used fudge silver shampoo but I've heard Bleach London silver shampoo is pretty gutsy so maybe you could try that?
Medication can also affect hair, I had a client who had sepsis and her hair was really frizzy for a while, luckily it's short so it grew out quite quickly, but we thought it might have been the medicines that caused it.

IamEarthymama · 23/08/2022 09:33

My DW is my hairdresser, she’s really good at styling a short cut but not so hot on advice.☺️
I have been using Fudge for about 4 years.

The idea that it could be medication is interesting, I have chronic arthritis and also psoriasis while Covid has affected my lungs, bladder and bowels. So I take quite a lot of medication.
Also, I love gardening and spend a lot if time outdoors.

I love the simplicity of using Fudge as there is no growing out, no roots showing.

thank you for replying Vthirtyone

Fanola is much better than fudge. Bleach London doesn't compare. Fanola smells a bit weird and can make your hair dry but in terms of results, it's the best.

OhMerde · 23/08/2022 09:40

My hairdresser recommended this and it's pretty good too www.google.com/search?ie=UTF-8&client=ms-android-orange-fr-rvc2&source=android-browser&q=chroma+id+bonding+mask

OhMerde · 23/08/2022 09:41

I'm on a roll now! You could also do a toner. Wella charm is good. You mix the shade with the developer, wang it on znd wait 30 minutes.

MatildaJayne · 23/08/2022 09:44

I quite like the yellowy grey, I pretend it’s ash blonde. 😉

IamEarthymama · 23/08/2022 09:50

I don't hate it, but I love the violet tones of the Fudge shampoo.** The yellow is most notable in my fringe.

I bought a silver gray semi permanent dye but I am reluctant to use it. I don't want to have to check roots etc.

I think I will try some samples of those suggested by pp.
Thanks again

My reluctance stems from having spent one Christmas looking like C U Jimmy!

Is it sun damage? The suns been very strong this year and uv breaks dye down really efficiently, especially pink and blue tones.

IamEarthymama · 23/08/2022 10:30

It could be sun damage I guess, I will have to wear a hat all the time!!

OP posts:
Fluffycloudland77 · 23/08/2022 10:44

Aveda do a hair sunscreen that you can’t tell is there.

DeborahVance · 23/08/2022 14:24

I'm in the same boat, that's interesting that it could be sun related. I used to get compliments on the colour of my hair all the time but it looks like kind of nicotine-y now

IamEarthymama · 23/08/2022 14:29

DeborahVance ☺️
Exactly!

I tried my granddaughter's violet hair chalk and it goes a different shade on the yellowing hair!

I will just have to brazen it out won't I?

Or should I use a permanent silver gray dye?

Fluffycloudland77 I always protect my hair in Greece!
I am an idiot...

Going round in it les here!

Do you use heat on your hair?

I've noticed that heat products definitely remove the lilac tinge.

I've started using a purple dye mixed in with my conditioner too.

Berthatydfil · 23/08/2022 14:35

Do you have any purple conditioner/mask. You can put some on and leave overnight.
I have also streaked the shampoo through my hair and left it overnight. It’s not too harsh if you it condition after. That gets a good affect.
alternatively there are purple /grey toners like Bleach London or Superdrug own brand and you can leave these on for longer for a more intense colour.

IamEarthymama · 23/08/2022 14:36

I use a heat protection spray, I have to straighten my fringe and side bits.
The joy of post-menopausal and post-covid hair, skin and nails!

Shall I start talking about my nails and how they split?
I use home gel kit to hold the damn things together!!

Should I have a professional manicure and polish?

Berthatydfil (love the name, you are a few miles north of me! I love Merthyr Rising!)

With the Fudge shampoo I spread purple all over the place, I would be purple all over if I wore the stuff to bed!!
(Not just my yers, which I never seem to be able remove all the violet from!)

Im not actually from Merthyr but the HoV region.

I just wear an old shower cap to bed and cover the pillow with a towel. But you could do it on a weekend morning and wash off a couple of hours later

IamEarthymama · 23/08/2022 15:05

I am a HOV woman too!

I just told my DW that I am going to wear Fudge shampoo to bed and she said, only if I pay the cost of new bedding or wear a bin bag with just my face peeping out. She’s sleeping in the spare room or better still a Travelodge 😉
I am definitely a messy person.

Indola colour mousse in Silver is the dogs bollocks.
Super colour and nice mousse too, not sticky. Stops my hair looking fluffy but doesn't make it rigid.
Only trouble is it doesn't last , so needs to be used after each wash.

MavisMonkey · 23/08/2022 15:25

I have the same issue and have found that I go most yellow when I use certain shampoos so now I don't use anything before the purple shampoo. Did you change your non purple shampoo recently?
I use fanola as mentioned by a previous poster and also bleach London. The fanola by itself isn't conditioning enough which is why I use the bleach London as well.

Colourist here…

If some of your hair is now yellow/white and not taking any of the fudge purple shampoo, it is likely to be resistant hair. You will need to open the cuticle layer to enable the colour to penetrate the hair shaft.

Alkaline water and shampoos will open up the cuticle layer. You could try washing your hair first with normal shampoo, then towel dry and apply the fudge thickly and leave for at least 45 mins.

If that doesn’t cover the yellow tinge, try a stronger direct dye tint. A direct dye is a semi permanent colour that will fade when washed. Some stain the hair more strongly than other brands.

..Or any of their purple shades.

If that still doesn’t cover it adequately, you’ll need an oxidising colour. That’s a tint that has to be mixed with developer. Usually called a demi permanent colour. Often marketed as lasting more than 20 shampoos. This will penetrate deeper into the hair shaft.

Hope this helps?

Shellingbynight · 23/08/2022 18:10

I've used several different purple shampoos including Fudge, at the moment i'm using L'Oreal professional silver shampoo. They all seem much of a muchness to me but it might be worth changing brand to see if it helps. Certainly the L'Oreal bottle (rather than the Fudge tube) makes it easier to avoid purple shampoo leaking everywhere!

I also use the Fudge purple conditioner so you could try adding that in too if you don't already - it's a nice product.

This is really helpful @AldiLidlDeeDee

Would the blue banana one not come out purple on grey hair? It looks very bright!
