how to be plus size and glam?

I'm a size 20 (trying to lose weight although not as hard I probably could try!)

I want to hide the fact I'm fat, as in make people not notice it, but instead look at me and think I'm glam or professional looking. How do I do that?

All clothes seem to be very mumsy or tent-like.

I wear M&S jeggings and maxi dresses from SheIn Curve. Sometimes things from roman originals and H&M plus.

What can I do in terms of accessories, make up, hair style / colour, nails etc to make me a glam plus size person?

I have looked at a few plus size bloggers but they are either showing off their underwear, or wearing clothes that are too short or too tight for their size. Not meaning to be nasty, just MHO. I don't want to look like I'm wearing a tent, but I don't want to empahise my fat either. Some of them do accessorize well but I'm not made of money and can't afford much of what they promote.

Hi! Size 22 here, I follow some plus size accounts on Instagram for inspiration like jessontheplusside

Buying clothing more upmarket will help. Cheap fabric does nothing for people who need body skimming fabrics rather than clingy ones.

Soontobe60 · 20/08/2022 16:33

First of all, don't try to hide your size! Make sure clothes fit you well. Emphasise your waist where possible. I think if you're clean, your hair is clean and styled well then you’re half way there.
Things that I notice - unkempt nails and if they’re painted, polish thats coming off.
Long dirty toe nails in sandal wearers - and lots of hard skin on their feet!
Orange fake tan.
Fake eyelashes that look like furry caterpillars.
Leggings that are so thin and tight you can see the wearers knickers through them (or worse, you can see they're not wearing knickers).

But these can be found on people of all sizes!

This is so true - also, if you’re wearing a dress, buy some slinky chub rub shorts to stop chub rub but also to help the dress hang nicely.

Wear your clothes with pride. Don't try to hide your size in drab clothes.
Pay attention to your grooming, posture, make-up and jewellery, specs if you wear them, and shoes.

Glamour isn't about your size but more about confidence.

Work out the most flattering colour palette for you. There are some online tools which can help.
Also figure out what shape you are and what your best bits are and draw attention to those.
I’m an 18-20 but hourglass, with a tummy, so I have decent boobs and do still have a bit of a waist (sadly not what it one was). Things that fit nicely around my boobs, with a V neck, then drape work well for me.
It’s about hiding the worst bits and accentuating the best. Gorgeous eyes? Choose colours that make them pop. Great hair? Make sure it’s well styled. That kind of thing.

LilacPoppy · 20/08/2022 16:42

I wouldn't waste the money as you would need high end brands as a minimum. Better to focus on the next 12-18 months loosing weight and then buying a new wardrobe.
You can drop to a 12 in that time which unless you are very short will mean you look good in anything.

Choose clothes to suit your shape and your colour. Since doing this,I’ve had so many compliments, while before I had none. Today, wore the marmite Sainsbury dress, mentioned in a post ages ago and had a compliment from a total stranger.

I’m not some supermodel, but an overweight 50+ year old.

(pear shape - so wear more colourful patterned tops, not neck, and darker, plain bottoms).

So don't waste money looking good as everything will look shit? Nice!

OP, I agree with nice fabrics , nice jewellery, good hair cut, perfume every day.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 20/08/2022 17:16

Also focus on what colours really suit you, if you're not sure then find out as this really helps.

Honestly this is what my original problem was - I'd look at the Instagram photos and think oh my gosh that's too short / tight / emphasis on the wrong body bits, but that was my own insecurities being projected onto the photos. When I actually tried dressing that way it made such a difference - I felt better, clothes were more flattering and I got so many compliments. You'll find it hard to dress in a "glam" style if you hold onto your current clothing insecurities/comfort clothes. Take the plunge! Find one thing you're a bit scared to wear in a new style and give it a go, you might be surprised.

yonce · 20/08/2022 17:20

P.s just read that back and I in no way mean to sound wanky - it's what worked for me (fellow plus size was frumpy gal)

EmmaH2022 · 20/08/2022 17:22

River sorry, I meant a link to the Sainsburys marmite dress 😂

learieonthewildmoor · 20/08/2022 17:25

Long beads and scarves can add a touch of glam.
so do earrings and a bracelet.
even just some mascara and lipstick can make you feel put together.
I find v- necks and deep scoop necklines are the most flattering. I also wear good shoes : ankle boots or nice flats rather than runners.

Yes to this! Clothes that I shy away from after years of conditioning that curves are unattractive. Like LilacPoppy
Thankfully most people are a bit more inclusive these days.
I think this instagrammer looks incredible.

how to be plus size and glam?
Badger1970 · 20/08/2022 17:32

I'm an 18/20 from a size 24, and still slooooowly losing.

I've found well fitted underwear really helps your confidence, and as my legs are very toned from lots of walking I wear decent leggings and jeggings (White Stuff, Studio 8) with tops that are fitted around the shoulders/under the bust and then flow over my stomach. Joe Browns are great, especially the colours/patterns. Roman as well. I've had a few good finds from Taking Shape too, they're a bit quirky/unusual.

I think dresses tend to look great. Make sure you go for ones that nip in under the boobs.

Sparkletastic · 20/08/2022 17:38

Also hair that is longer than chin length and spend money on good make up. Bright lipstick if you've got the lips for it.
