Realities of a pixie cut...

Pixie cuts always look amazing on-line but I know there's a decent stylist and a load of products / time / effort that has gone into the look. What's it's like day to day with a pixie cut? I'm scared of it ageing me or making my face/neck look too big. I'm a size 14 with a round but not chubby face. Currently have a grown out bob which needs a cut and not sure how short to go. What are your experiences please?

i have one and I love it.
Hair cut every 5weeks, but I have an excellent stylist who can make the most of my baby fine hair. I don’t use any products at all, just wash and comb it. The cut is so good I don’t need anything else.
I’m 56, with a little face, had it cut from very long when I was about 45. I came home one day, and thought ‘My face looks Ok, but my hair no longer suits me’! Best thing I’ve every done.

I loved my pixie cut and I think I looked fab (I'm not skinny at all) and I would LOVE to go back to that hairstyle but I just can't afford the 5-6 weekly haircuts. I loved my cropped do styled with a fancy headband and dangly earrings. Argh this is making me want to chop all my hair off! But I know it would be so short lived as it would just grow back while I can't pay for more cuts.

I have a pixie and love it. I think the key is a stylist who understands how your hair behaves. There's nowhere to hide with a short cut, so having it cut in a way that works for you is key. Mine knows exactly where the weight and volume is in my hair and cuts/styles accordingly.

I have to have a trim every 6 weeks (can stretch to 7), and I use colour to mix things up (sometimes all over colour, sometimes highlights, sometimes light, sometimes dark...) and have it coloured every 3 cuts.

It takes next to no time to dry and style, and is very easy to do.

For me it was about proportions as much as the cut itself. I’ve got broad shoulders for my height (I’m 5’) and have a really small head (toddler GCs headwear from their dressing up sets). So a really short hair cut made me feel out of proportion somehow. I feel more balanced out with a cut below jaw length.

i also found a pixie cut hard work because I couldn’t just get up and go in the morning as bits were sticking up and out and had to be re-shaped/re-styled. If I’d got thicker or wavier hair maybe it would have been easier as I could have floofed it up with my hands and just set it with a bit of spray. Now I’ve got it in a bob just below my jaw and generally I just have to brush it add a bit of spray for body and it’s sorted. I’d not go back to a pixie with my height, proportions or hair type/texture.

My hair is fine and straight which makes my pixie really easy to look after. Doesn't need washing styling everyday. No combing just a quick ruffle in the morning with my fingers. Sometimes with a putty or wax if im wanting to look particularly polished. I clipper the back and sides myself to keep it short and then get it cut on the tops and the lengths every 10/12 weeks at the hairdresser.

ShirleyJackson · 18/08/2022 19:39

I like mine. It’s very freeing.

I have thick, unruly hair which requires a ton of taming, and stays tidy for about five nanoseconds, so the joy of not having to think about it at all far outweighs any worries I might have about people being offended by the sight of my forty eight year old face under a pixie cut.

Itreallyistimetogo · 18/08/2022 19:46

I have a very short pixie. Needs absolutely no styling, just wash and go. Can put a bit of product on if I'm really feeling extravagant. I get mine cut every 6 weeks or so.

Goldrill · 18/08/2022 19:56

I get it cut very short and thinned out (really thick hair), and then clipper back and sides myself. If I can't be bothered to get a proper cut and it's annoying me, I'll just grade 8 the top too.
Wash it with soap in the shower. Occasionally use a bit of wax if I need to look smart.

I have only really ever had it waist length or cropped; tried something in between a couple of times but far too much effort!

supersonicspider · 19/08/2022 08:37

Thank you all so much for your responses - very insightful and helpful. I do have an excellent stylist so no issues there but I do have thinning hair on top which I worry would be more exposed. I'm currently used to hiding it with how I part my hair or I wear alice bands. It might be that with very short hair I could add volume to hide the hair loss although my stylist did say that my scalp may show more and he was reluctant to take it shorter.

How much does everyone pay for their regular maintenance cuts?

whenwillthemadnessend · 19/08/2022 08:40

I loved mine but my hairdresser is an amazing cutter and it used to grow out well so I only went every 4 months or so.

Mine long again now but I'd definitely do it again one day.

AquaticSewingMachine · 19/08/2022 08:42

It needs upkeep via cuts, especially mine as I have both sides buzzed to #2. But it is very, very easy day to day. I don't own a comb, brush or hairdryer. I literally wash in shower, finger style, with paste for texture if I want. I have the central portion longer so I can mix it up a bit.

supersonicspider · 19/08/2022 09:00

Wow living the dream - minimal time spent on hair in the morning sounds amazing!

It's my go to haircut. And yes, it looks best on a small face, good cheekbones, and thick hair is essential for the texture. If you have all these you'll be ok. No upkeep apart from regular haircuts, I would just push my fingers through it and go,

TrashyPanda · 19/08/2022 10:05

I’m going for a pixie cut next week.
late 50s, larger lady with fine hair, that is really quite thin.
currently in a Bob, but the thinning is really depressing me, so hoping a pixie cut will be the answer.

NotMeNoNo · 19/08/2022 10:27

I've had a pixie for about 5 years. I have really thick wavy/bushy hair, I've only ever managed to grow it to shoulder length and it was taking 30 minutes to blow dry it, nor would it go nicely into any styles. A pixie does need a little styling each day but it's 5 minutes tops.

I'm not elfin at all, but it's a clean unfussy style that I like. Like any hairstyle it can look a bit rough first thing in the morning but you can raise the game with products, earrings and make up. It did not look good in iron grey though, I'm waiting till I get to a nearly clean silver to leave off the dye.

It's 2 hours for a cut and colour every 6 weeks, so I guess you weigh that up vs less maintenance every day.

Cam22 · 19/08/2022 10:53

Don’t do it.

Because, of course, all of us strive at all times for the massively important goal of looking maximally feminine.

I wear dungarees and DMs with my pixie.

Smurftastic · 19/08/2022 12:30

@Cam22 I think pixie cuts can looks fantastic and I'm utterly bored of every single woman having long hair. I think it often just looks like 'default' hair! Not sure how my shoulder-length bob worn in a clip is better than funky shorter cut but I imagine we all have different tastes. Love reading all pixie cuts experiences btw, thanks OP.

I'm wearing dungarees right now. And no makeup. I look banging tyvm.

I frequently get compliments on my hair in public.

P.s. My hairspiration was Dame Kelly. I defy anyone to say she doesn't look the business. "Feminine" be fucked.

I also defy anyone to say that Emma Watson does not look feminine with her pixie cut in todays photos.
And look at old photos of Winona Ryder. And Halle Berry - many women look their best with this hairstyle, but porn has made us believe we all need to have long hair to be ‘feminine’ 🙄
