Realities of a pixie cut...

Pixie cuts always look amazing on-line but I know there's a decent stylist and a load of products / time / effort that has gone into the look. What's it's like day to day with a pixie cut? I'm scared of it ageing me or making my face/neck look too big. I'm a size 14 with a round but not chubby face. Currently have a grown out bob which needs a cut and not sure how short to go. What are your experiences please?

I’ve had one before and I don’t think it’s to do with weight but bone structure as to whether it will suit you. They usually look good with high cheekbones and a heart shaped face imo. Could well work with a round face too if you have good cheekbones.
However, it’s a lot of work. You have to wash and style everyday as it’s impossible to tame the bed head otherwise. It also needs to be cut every 6 weeks or it loses its shape. I wouldn’t get one again because of the time and maintenance issue.

I had a proper pixie cut, really short (like first pic). Very easy as no styling needed but you do need regular trims and it's a pain to grow out if you want it longer again.
Second pic's style needs more styling to give the top, longer layers shape.
Easy in the mornings and great in the summer, but I did get bored as couldn't change it up much style wise. Clips or a bit of gel was about it!

Generally they look good i think for round faces as lift weight away...
Especially if your hair is finer..
I havd thick hair and definitely needed cutting 6/8weeks as went a bit wide! Rest of time found really easy to care for....eash n dry in 10mins as just brushed when wet ...
So definitely depends on hair type

Dogtooth · 18/08/2022 10:26

IME they need cutting more often but in between you can easily do fuck all with it and it looks fine. So you either have longer hair - less cutting but more faff or shorter hair - more cutting but less faff.

Maybe depends on your hair texture though, mine's straight and floppy so never needs much doing to it. As to washing your hair every day, I only wash mine every 3-4 days. Currently have a bob but thinking of cutting it all back off!

I wouldn't worry about fatness tbh, I think being big with short hair looks ace because it's less apologetic, I like a nice confident look whatever size. Long hair in a ponytail can look like you're sorry for taking up space.

@Dogtooth I love this outlook.

MaChienEstUnDick · 18/08/2022 10:40

I have to wash my hair every day to look presentable, but then it takes literally 60 seconds to blast it dry. When I go away with my friends with long hair, they're maybe only washing every third day but I'll have two cups of tea and get a few chapters of my book done before they've dried it.

It does need regular trimming, but at my hairdresser that's cheaper than a restyle.

Really the only thing I'm envious of is when my friends with long hair can do three or four different styles - down, half up, pony, plait, whatever - it is a one-style hairdo. But if you've only a bob at the minute, you wouldn't be able to do that much anyway?

ThomasinaGallico · 18/08/2022 10:53

First find a really, really good stylist who understands how to cut the many varieties of short hair, its thickness and texture, and how it’ll work on your face shape. Easier said than done in many cases.

A good cut needs trimming and upkeep every 6-8 weeks but if done right you should be able to get away with minimal rough drying with maybe a little styling wax now and again. I love my pixie cut, and have had variations on it most of my adult life.

teaandcats · 18/08/2022 10:55

I have a proper pixie (not a crop) with more length on top, and it takes almost zero effort.

I don't use any product and let it air dry. As soon as I get out of the shower, I comb everything into place so it dries how I want it. That's literally it.

I go to a very good stylist who is great at technical cuts and this makes all the difference. It is pricey, but I can get away with 8 weeks between visits, and the ease of maintenance between cuts makes it worth the price.

LadyVictoriaSponge · 18/08/2022 11:02

I found it very high maintenance, hairdressers every 6 weeks and I had to wash and style it every morning as with properly short hair after waking up I looked like I had had my fingers in the electric sockets whilst going through a wind tunnel, definitely not sexy bed head!

HaveringWavering · 18/08/2022 11:14

I haven’t had one since I was a kid but one thing that I think would be fantastic would be not having to worry about longer hair blowing in your face in a windy autumn (or as you cruise in a summer convertible!), or tying it back for exercise, longer hair feeling all lank and sweaty in the hot summer etc etc.

I’m always envious of my husband when we climb towers or hills to look at views as it’s always windy up high - I have to choose between a photo with hair in my face or my hair tied back, which doesn’t suit me at all. unless I can get the angle exactly right for that classic wind tunnel effect!

Riverlee · 18/08/2022 11:22

I had a pixie for years, and find it was easy to manage. Literally wash and go. Add some styling product if you want, but was very easy to manage.

However, you do need to get a good stylist. Looking back at photos, some make me look quite man-ish, whilst others are more feminine.

During lockdown, my pixie grew out and I now have it one length. I’m amazed how quick haircuts are now, and I can leave longer gaps between haircuts. I guess it’s because there’s no layers in the hair.

HumourReplacementTherapy · 18/08/2022 11:24

I had one and while I did like it on me...
Had to wash and style it every day. (I've got wavy hair)
Only looked great for about ten days after cutting, after that begins to lose shape.
Root growth was a bugger
I got bored of only having one hairstyle.
I had gone from bra strap length to pixi and growing it out is tough. (Mullet head) I had extensions put in round the sides for the worst of it.
It took my hairdresser several attempts over bloody months to cut it right too.
You really need someone who is good with short hair.

MrsSkylerWhite · 18/08/2022 11:26

I had one in my early twenties and it looked fantastic. I would look awful now (late 50s) because my face has changed a lot.

it wasn’t low-maintenance. My long hair is much easier.

???

Um - thanks? I'm apologising for being there? I thought I just preferred having longer hair...

Flockameanie · 18/08/2022 11:34

I had one in my 30s and loved it. I found it super low maintenance and it made me feel great. If I wasn’t washing my hair that day I’d just dunk my head under the tap or otherwise seriously wet it to re-style in the morning. Pull through a bit of hair putty-type product and that was it. I really loved it and also loved not having hair blowing in my face.

But it stopped suiting me around 40, when I had tiny kids and was knackered and a bit fatter. I looked ‘drawn’ all the time. Also it was impossible to get the required regular trims (every 2 months for me) with a baby!

I’m planning to return to it in my 50s/60s as I think it’s a great cut on older women.

DilemmaDelilah · 18/08/2022 11:48

I have a pixie cut. I have it cut every 6 weeks but otherwise I don't really do much with it at all. I wash and leave most days, but it can be adapted into slightly different styles with a bit of gel. I can get away without styling it at all - I don't have to dry it most of the time. I love it!

TheOGCCL · 18/08/2022 12:51

I went very short last year. I found it made me more confident and I felt more put together. I do think it made my overall aura read older.

It needed maintenance cutting especially as I have a low hairline so she was shaving some bits which I didn’t like the feel of at all either just shaved or growing back in (quite fluffy). It did not require much maintenance day to day as there was nothing really to misbehave.

I’ve let it grow a bit now and prefer it on balance. It looks less severe and ‘done’. It’s still very short. I often look around and I have the shortest hair of every woman in sight. I’ve actually enjoyed seeing how it grows out and it’s leading me to a shape I really like but wouldn’t ever have been able to describe or ask for.

DilemmaDelilah · 18/08/2022 13:11

@TheOGCCL when it has grown to how you think you would like it cut, take some photos so that you can show your hairdresser next time you have it cut.

LouisaMayAlcott · 18/08/2022 13:44

I have a choppy very short pixie. My hair is really fine so needs to be textured. I also have a narrow face with high cheekbones so the pixie hair balances it. I do have a tiny trim every 5/6 weeks but it's dry in less than a minute (I just shove my head in the sink if I'm not showering as soon as I get up) and if I want to be really quick I spray the wet hair with hairspray and muss it up and leave it.

Greenstar22 · 18/08/2022 14:30

I'm really on the fence whether to get a pixie cut or not as well. I had 1 in my 20s but I'm now 40, older, but fatter and not sure how it will look! I suppose it will always grow back if i don't like it but growing it out is a nightmare!!

XingMing · 18/08/2022 16:29

I'e had something like a pixie most of my life, because I have curly hair, small features and a heart shaped face. It suits me better than anything else, and it's really easy. Only use a dryer if it's freezing weather, plus a bit of curl definer. Maintenance cuts about 8-10 week intervals. But I do need a good technical hairdresser or the curls don't sit right. I'm 66, and grey.

GotTheConch · 18/08/2022 16:31

Tricky look to pull off. Can look great though.

ageingdisgracefully · 18/08/2022 16:42

I've had a pixie for years. My hair is very fine and thin and won't grow. It's longer on top and highlighted for texture. It goes through phases of being easy and sometimes it's a pita in which case I get a tiny trim.

I normally get a trim every 6/8 weeks and highlights every 5/6 months. I wash it every 3/4 days. I don't generally use product.

I look ridiculous with long hair as my face is so small it would disappear behind long hair. I always wear makeup and earrings and I'm generally well-ish put together; I think I feel more "exposed" having short hair if that makes sense.

ButchersGirl · 18/08/2022 16:51

I would say it all hinges on hair thickness and texture. I imagined myself as chic and modern with a pixie cut but the reality was a large, fuzzy bush on my head no matter what products I used.

My hair is naturally thick and coarse, I just wish someone had warned me that with my hair type it would look ridiculous.

The first day I had it done my FiL saw me, burst out laughing and said, "You haven't got the hair for short hairstyles, didn't you know?" I mean, he's a pig but he has a point.
