Can someone recommend a very basic face cream for my very sensitive skin

Not sure what has happened to the skin on my face recently but it has so much hyperpigmentation and a real redness to it (although not sore).
I do have sensitive skin and I think that combined with being in peri (I’m 49) and perhaps things like Hyaluronic acid in my current creams are exacerbating the redness (no idea what is causing the hyperpigmentation as I have never been a sun worshipper!).
I need to go to basics and start using a very gentle day and night cream with basic ingredients.
Can anyone recommend any good ones? I use cruelty free products.

Hi OP you might already be planning this but just in case, I wanted to recommend buying the smallest sizes of things to test them out before committing to a big bottle, as if you are hyper sensitised you might find even some of the really gentle creams aren't suitable atm. Eg Cerave is great for lots of people but unfortunately gave me hives. I use Cetaphil quite well but I know some others can't tolerate that, depending on what their skin is sensitive to.

You could try straight coconut oil first if you want to go super basic, it can be quite soothing and anti inflammatory if you can tolerate it.

Good shout. There are often sample sachets for sale on ebay.

CottonSock · 15/08/2022 18:43

Also shouting out for Avene and La Roche Posay. The la roche suncream is very good. My face cream is toleriane

Bouledeneige · 15/08/2022 19:03

I have eczema and can't tolerate Aveeno. I'd go with E45 and washing with emulsifier.

JustHavinABreak · 15/08/2022 19:07

I'm finding Cerave really good at the moment. They have a lovely PM cream and day creams with either SPF25 or SPF50

LookdeepintotheParka · 15/08/2022 19:37

Totally agree about getting some sample sizes for trial. My reactive skin absolutely hates CeraVe and Cetaphil but there's always lots of recommendations on this forum!

My holy grail turned out to be from Aldi - it's just called 'facial cream' and it's super gentle. I also get on fine with Clinique moisturiser although much pricier. The Clinique counter will give you a decent sample to try though which can be useful.

Not a cream but I use pure Argan oil on my sensitive skin and it's lovely.

Nivia

Cerave for me too. Otherwise Avene,la Roche Posay or Aveeno. Cerave is the best.

MistyRock · 31/08/2022 16:03

I have had success with TBS aloe vera range, Nivea blue and soft, Sebamed baby soft cream and I use their pollution defence spf 20 cream and eye cream. When my skin is really sore an dry I use bepanthen nappy rash cream. It is my skin saviour and really sorts it out. Generally when my skin is bad I turn to baby products .

Charlieandlola · 31/08/2022 16:07

Superdrug vitamin E cream , also bizarrely Clinique Superdefense for dry skin. Beauty pie Japan infusion moisturiser also

SalviaOfficinalis · 31/08/2022 16:13

Clinique dramatically different moisturiser (the yellow one) is really gentle and nourishing. One of the few things that doesn’t irritate my skin.

BackOnTheBandWagon · 31/08/2022 16:14

Nivea soft is the best one for me, and also pure jojoba oil (which Nivea has in it)

MissHavishamsMouldyOldCake · 31/08/2022 16:18

Bioderma Sensibio anti-redness cream. Just a very soothing, fragrance free moisturiser.

My skin doesn't like hylauronic acid. I'd ditch that.

Newgirls · 31/08/2022 16:18

Which cera ve cream are you all using on your face? I have a large tube and I’m not sure it’s sinking in

Rinatinabina · 31/08/2022 16:18

Cerave found it very helpful for peeling tretinoin skin

uncomfortablydumb53 · 31/08/2022 17:29

@Newgirls
If you find the tube of Cerave is not sinking in, you might find the moisturising lotion( with a pump top) suits you better

luckylavender · 31/08/2022 18:07

I have really sensitive skin, prone to dermatitis. I use Liz Earle. It's great.

Imabitbusyatthemoment · 31/08/2022 18:09

Sukin. Organic, super gentle, inexpensive and lasts ages.

Liz Earle didn't agree with my sensitive skin at all. Seems very fragranced.
