Can anyone post pictures of stylish mum outfits for 2022? I was going to try instagram but no clue how to locate someone who shows that in their account.

Alright alright fair cop, I’m sorry for my comment. It did sound a bit off at first glance though, like being a mum means you need to relate everything with Joules and Boden.

No worries. But in fairness I’m asking because I’m pretty certain Joules and Boden is London circa 10 yrs ago and things have moved on.

what’s a typical outfit for you if you are happy with your look/style?

I don't worry about Instagram and such, I go to a shop and buy what I like.
Isn't that what everyone does?
Am I weird? 🤔

Not weird but I do think what we like changes and is influenced by what we see on others and that why fashion changes. I think I’m stuck in the 2000’s and am open to migrating to a more recent style even if it feels a bit weird at first. I just think getting stuck in ‘what you like’ leads to old and dated woman looks so I want to experiment with going with fashion rather than being dragged along kicking and screaming by it as I insist on wearing my skinnies.

Well at the moment as it’s baking hot, denim hot pants and a white vest top. Definitely have a tummy in it but I don’t give a shit at the mo, my legs look good so I’m hoping it balances out 😂

Normally I shop secondhand so it’s a bit of a mix of things, but for work a cotton dress of some description is a go to, currently my favourite is a a fit and flare back cotton from Oasis and black fisherman sandals. Then a huge canvas tote bag in bright turquoise because I can just lob everything in there- snacks and drink etc for the nursery pick up.

whalleyt · 14/08/2022 15:43

I shop in Cos, Arket, Matches

Zebracat · 14/08/2022 16:20

Old and dated woman looks?
Really?
Im 63 maybe I should start a thread on what an old and dated woman wears. Or maybe you can tell me?

If you want to? Not sure what the indignation is about. You could well be fashionable. I’ve no idea. The comment was not about age, it was about old and dated style fashion on a woman. Which people tend to fall into the trap of (me included) and which I’m trying to avoid. Feel free to wear what you like but depending on what it is it may look old and dated.

I would just buy what you like the look of but ensure they're tough enough to withstand frequent washing and tumble drying!

I wear a lot of jersey dresses/jumpsuits from hush as a I find the quality very good and they have that easy, relaxed style. I bought loads of really pretty cottony summer dresses from the likes of Aspiga/free people to wear this year but most of them have been worn once and then sat languishing in my wardrobe - I just can't be arsed with the hand washing and ironing.

ShadowKitty · 14/08/2022 16:52

I know what you mean. I've really struggled with dressing post-kids - my body has changed and what used to suit me and make me comfortable doesn't anymore.

I still have a pair of Miss Sixty size eight jeans from 2002 that I have delusions about needing again one day... God I loved those jeans....Grin

LidFlipper · 14/08/2022 16:57

I live in dungarees. Easy to breastfeed in, great for crawling around as nothing rides up or down and when im shopping I fill the front pocket with snacks that my baby can help himself to while im pushing him in the trolley!

Floydthebarber · 14/08/2022 16:59

I know what doesn't work: long skirts or dressed with buttons. I keep finding myself kneeling down on the skirt and ripping the button holes.

EllaPaella · 14/08/2022 16:59

I'm 43 and have 3 kids, one is an adult now and left home the other two still at school.
I work full time and wear a uniform at work so don't need office wear.
On my days off at home I tend to wear a lot of different styles of jeans and tops/jumpers. Right now i'm wearing dungarees with flip flops and a vest underneath. Denim or jersey shorts in this hot weather. Most of my wardrobe is casual but I do have a lot of dresses for going out for meals/drinks etc which I usually wear with high tops, sandals or boots with a biker jacket or denim jacket.
For instagram inspo I love Fran Bacon and Instyle with Helen. They are both a similar age and have a the same kind of casual style that I like.
Shops I like are wide and varied, anything from Cos to Sezane with a lot of high street shops in between. Most of my jeans are Levi's.

Your post made me giggle as I also saved a pair of very low rise Bench combat pants from 2001 in the hope that one day I could wear them again.
They have just been stolen by my 15 year old DD who said she has no idea I had ever had such good fashion sense!! And they look a million times better on her than they ever did on me.

sarahc336 · 14/08/2022 17:09

I'd say as a mum I wear everything as I would have done apart from shorter summer dresses, nothing worse than constantly having to bend over to pick stuff up, clip car seats in etc and having to worry about flashing my knickers so more midi dresses or play suits for me but apart from that just because your a mum you can wear whatever you want still 😄

Stickmansmum · 14/08/2022 17:24

I tend not to wear the silky shirts as they don’t handle dirty hands on them. Also kids slip right off your hip! I don’t wear the stuff that creases easily as again, holding a kid on your hip then putting them down you have heavily crinkled side. I don’t wear the skimpy spaghetti strap tops as firstly hoiking kids up can pull it below your bra then you have to shimmy it back up while holding child. All my skinny jeans give builders butt when grabbing their many dropped items on the floor. Newly acquired mum tum also looks lumpy and makes top ride up above lovehandles in certain tops and styles I loved before. Non stretchy materials (as in zero stretch) hurt in the random positions you find yourself with a child dangling out of you or bending in a way only a minder of little child ever has to.

Things do change a bit in my experience.

also random but related question….how the fuck do you avoid major pant lines in gym leggings? The younger ladies in my gym said no knickers. Now I have camel toe….can’t win. Any secret to this?

Gigantic knickers are your friend. Like huge. Massive. Could be used as a parachute. I get mine in Tesco, I think they are called invisible pants or no VPL or something? They come up to the bellybutton and are the least sexy thing Ive ever worn, with the possible exception of the anti-DVT socks they insisted I wear while giving birth. But they are comfy and invisible under leggings.

Stickmansmum · 14/08/2022 19:44

Thanks, will try find some.

For me it's all about comfort and practicality.
Also I don't spend a lot on my clothes as they will likely get food/ cleaning products on them.
I buy clothes that can easily be washed and still hold its shape/ size.
Tend to shop at h&m, new look, fatface, m&s, sainsburys, hush.
I'm a dress/ maxi skirt kinda person, can't be dealing with jeans or anything too restrictive.
I love loose flowy type fabrics so loving the current oversized trend.
I also wear shoes that are comfortable, birks and Vejas- stereotypical I know!
I'm currently figuring out my colours and body shape so doing lots of reading around this particularly as my body shape has changed a lot.

Caneparrot · 14/08/2022 22:02

Re the perfect t shirt - I love jigsaw, I have the perfect white t shirt from there that’s thicker/nicer quality than my others. It also has a slightly thicker collar (not a collar but the trim round the neckline if you know what I mean) that I think makes it look more quality somehow. Arket also do a similar one with a slightly longer sleeve length (so hitting mid bicep rather than riding up and looking like a cap sleeve which I hate).

Caneparrot · 14/08/2022 22:02

Sorry that was meant to be a reply to your reply to my original post!

Sheffieldissunny · 14/08/2022 22:16

I often wear leggings with short dresses. I'm seeing a lot of jumpsuits though and they look good. Is it an issue if you share a toilet with a toddler though?

WowStarsWow · 15/08/2022 09:48

This forum used to be so lovely, and now it's as toxic as the rest of MN. You've done well to keep it on topic OP!

Anyway thanks for the thread, I am in the same position (returning to work after mat leave, still got a stone to lose, no idea what to wear for either work or casual!) so it's nice to read.

AllThatAndMore · 15/08/2022 10:01

Comfort seems to be what is in style in my area for everyone but especially mums

Dungeree jump suites made from cotton or a jersey material

maxi or a midi dresses. these are my go to. You don’t need to worry about shaving , you look put together and it’s comfy and cool for summer. a long skirt also works

leggings- both long and biker short style

jean shorts ( nothing form fitting . Always a bit baggy on the legs )

Birkenstock or Birkenstock style sandals

White trainers

AutumnOcean · 15/08/2022 15:56

My go-to outfits are flowy maxi skirts or high waisted jeans with a t-shirt or slightly loose sweater tucked in, or a flowy midi/maxi dress (usually in subtle floral prints) with a cardigan or cropped sweater over top. If we're playing outside it's leggings and a baggy jumper! I'd normally wear vans, converse or sandals with these outfits, and can usually be found rocking a mumbun 😆 I can also wear these options for casual days at work.
My style hasn't changed too much, just added some length to my outfits since I'm always bending over picking up babies, toys. Hope this helps.

Birkenstocks will never look good or stylish. Don't fall into that trap.

I hate when threads go like this. Everyone knew damn well what you meant and chose to be obtuse for th3 sake of it. Ridiculous

You see so clearly how the first few replies set the tone on here, give permission for twatiness. It’s as tiresome as it’s predictable.
