Will the cost of living crisis stop you buying premium beauty brands?

Just wondering whether brands like Nars or Trinny London will suffer, or whether people will still spend up to £40 on a tinted moisturiser?

Of course it depends on your individual financial situation but I think many of us are going to notice inflation in one way or another. Often these sorts of items are seen as treats.

I'd probably prefer to cut out something else to make sure I can have my favourite products but it might stop me randomly experimenting with new stuff (rather sticking to tried and tested and something I know I will use up completely).

It’s definitely a consideration,

I only use two ‘premium’ brand make-up items - Nars foundation & concealer. I’m thinking about not repurchasing the foundation and just using the concealer.

I swapped to cheaper brand beauty products years ago when I had kids, anyway. I suddenly realised spending £40 on moisturiser and having a cupboard full of lotions and potions was ridiculous! I like brands like Avene, Vichy, CeraVe, which are sort of higher end drugstore, I suppose.

I also buy most clothes secondhand from Vinted and the like, and try not to go mad with purchases since the pandemic. Lockdown definitely curbed my consumerism.

I got sucked into Beauty Pie trial subscription and got a few products. Most were underwhelming but there were two products I would like to continue getting but can’t justify the subscription cost (the neck spray and super drops if anyone is interested in knowing which products are good - the elastic triple eye cream, japanfusion serum and spf 30 lip balm were mediocre).
My main regime is pretty cheap - most pricey skincare is hado labo premium gold serum which I absolutely will never be without as it if amazing. I mainly use Cerave, The Ordinary and Etude House.
Rhe one product that I foot around with and sometimes buy a pricey version of is eye cream as I have yet to find my HG. I think it costs me more to try new ones so I may just go back to the Avon dual eye cream/gel - it’s the best I’ve found for the price. Although I did like Avene Physiolift but it’s £25 which I can’t justify.
I think like previously said, it will mean that I don’t try new products so much and stick to what I know. Having said that, I was sucked into buying a Sukin face scrub mentioned on here the other day 😂 and I also have just downloaded the Avon app which could prove costly! One eye cream may turn into 6 items knowing me so the cost saving will be lost and I may as well have just got the Avene!

Lily073 · 14/08/2022 14:23

No. I will still be buying all of my usual premium beauty and fashion brands.

onthefencesitter · 14/08/2022 14:31

I will go without haircuts, salon hairdyes, new clothes, new shoes meals out, days out and buy cheaper food so that I can have my premium beauty products! I would happily wear second hand clothes and £35 loafers from Clarks outlet but have suqqu foundation, Chanel highlighter, nars blush, Charlotte Tilbury contour kit and milk makeup contour on my face! I feel like it's because I can get nice clothes fairly easily at cheap prices, but it's so hard to find a foundation/blush/highlighter/cream eyeshadow/contour that works for me! Having said that, I will go for cheaper brands; for example buying Clinique contour over Charlotte Tilbury which is at least £10 cheaper. I already wait until I have used up everything before buying replacements so not sure how much more I can economise on that front.

I don't feel the same about skincare; my skincare is generally below £10-12.

TotalRhubarb · 14/08/2022 14:32

I’ve massively cut down and am using much cheaper brands, with the exception of moisturiser, only because I haven’t found a cheaper one as good as the two I love -Elemis pro collagen marine cream and L’Occitane Immortelle.

I definitely won’t be splashing out to try new things, given how much of a gamble it is.

woodhill · 14/08/2022 14:37

I will be cutting back on beauty products and clothing and trying to use up what I have first

Butitsnotfunnyisititsserious · 14/08/2022 14:44

No, my skincare is expensive but it works and my foundation too. Luckily I buy a lot through look fantastic (via top cash back) or boots and have a good chunk of money in points or money.

gogohmm · 14/08/2022 14:52

Mine all comes from Aldi. I highly recommend

TullyApplebottom · 14/08/2022 14:55

I’ve already stopped, largely. the only thing I really spend on now is concealer. And bath oil and perfume
there is so much good stuff at lower price points now.

Lovinglife45 · 14/08/2022 15:01

No, will not compromise on my MAC foundation and concealer. Roughly £50 for both which last six to eight months. I buy mascara, eye liner, lipstick from Boots/Superdrug. My facial wash, face and body lotions cost no more than £8 altogether.

Parkmama · 14/08/2022 15:05

Yes I have switched Clarins for Aldi skincare, Mac for Primark foundation, Bodyshop for Primark cleansing balm and whilst it's not the same, it's ok and I'm glad to save a few £££

Fluffycloudland77 · 14/08/2022 15:06

A lot of my stuffs cheap because I won’t use things tested on animals but I’d rather buy smart price food than give Aveda hair care up.

I can tell a slight difference between smart price chopped tomatoes and Mutti chopped tomatoes but theres a huge difference between cheap shampoo & Aveda.

MintyGreenDreams · 14/08/2022 15:09

I won't stop buying Armani lucidity silk but a bottle lasts me months

MintyGreenDreams · 14/08/2022 15:09

Luminous

MidnightMeltdown · 14/08/2022 15:22

theres a huge difference between cheap shampoo & Aveda.

Is there? I was very resentful when I bought Aveda shampoo because I noticed no difference whatsoever compared to using a cheap supermarket shampoo. I felt mugged!

The conditioner was slightly better, but not enough to justify the price difference

MidnightMeltdown · 14/08/2022 15:23

I think that I probably already have enough beauty products to see me though the cost of living crisis Blush

ivebeencalledworse · 14/08/2022 16:01

Not for me. Everyone will have different priorities. I use makeup sparingly but I have the things I know work for me and I may push back when I buy them, but I won't switch to cheaper things because they won't work.

For us it's processed foods, which are treats for us. I can knock about £20 a week off our food budget by not buying any treats and making sure I cook three meals a day and don't slack off, or meal prep so we always have food, but there won't be any sausage rolls or cheese which are more pricey processed accompaniments.

LookdeepintotheParka · 14/08/2022 16:17

I'll stick to the brands I love and that work for me but use a wide range of products anyway - I have everything from Dior, Murad and Lancome to Aldi in my cupboard!

Probably like everyone else from now on, I'll be reliant on deals to repurchase the more expensive stuff and I'll have to stop my little splurges on some lovely Rituals scrubs or a new perfume 😩

Thehokeypokey · 14/08/2022 16:21

I'll still use them but make sure I pick them up when it's 20% off at John Lewis, etc rather than buying them from wherever at full price because I've run out. Bit more planning will save me a fair amount of money over the year.

AuntieMarys · 14/08/2022 16:27

I've moved from Dermalogica to Cerave.

Sweetlikechocolate6 · 14/08/2022 16:31

I use vinted to get premium beauty products now if you find reliable sellers who post a lot of photos and product info it’s decent

grayhairdontcare · 14/08/2022 16:54

Will ask for vouchers for birthdays and Christmas and stockpile accordingly

Boppertini · 14/08/2022 17:24

I was thinking of this the other day, happy to see a thread on the subject. I will keep buying the products that make the most difference for me (I already wait until there is a discount anyway) - I like drunk elephant’s retinol, baby face mask and day cream. Also tan luxe for fake tan. I think I’ll be less inclined to splurge on things that I haven’t noticed that difference with - I’ll do a cheaper night cream and oil I think for example.
I think I’ll keep Liberty’s beauty drop - it’s a bit of a splurge at £20 a month but the quarterly boxes are fun and it’a good that spending the credit still entitles you to their vouchers so it’s a bit of a double save for me there.

Perfect28 · 14/08/2022 18:21

It's pure pink tax to pay so much for such a small amount of cream/ lotion etc.

RampantIvy · 14/08/2022 18:25

I have even tempered skin and a £5 moisturiser behaves exactly the same as a £30 moisturiser on my skin, so spending £££ on beauty products is a waste of money for me.
