Fly boots dated?

twistandshoot · 09/08/2022 11:16

I've been wearing my Fly boots with skinny jeans or knee length dresses forever but I'm wondering if they're a bit dated now? Opinions please!

I don't think fly are mainstream fashion and come under the heading quirky. Given this they don't date like fashion items

ThisWasMeTooo · 09/08/2022 13:07

They look like boots you would get from Moshulu or Pavers.

CointreauVersial · 09/08/2022 13:32

Fly boots
Skinny jeans
Knee length dresses

All dated, imho. But if you like them, keep wearing them.

GingerPigz · 09/08/2022 13:37

Personally I think they look dated - now a firm favourite of the late 40 something mum clinging onto her trendier past... which possibly describes me to a tee (but mine died a natural death about 8 yrs ago).

That's what I thought (and you've described me quite well 😄) time to ditch them and find something else! Any ideas?

I think they’re too ‘sensible’ looking for me to ever look stylish. What is it about them you like? There are so many flat boots around that would look a bit more current if that’s what you want - loads of chunky Chelsea boots, hiker boots etc. Have a look at Vagabond, Grenson, DMs, Solovair, Lanx - they all do lots of flat boots that would be practical/comfy but look good (IMO).

ABlindAssassin · 09/08/2022 14:40

I have a fleece-lined pair of Fly boots that I LOVE, but didn't wear them much last winter as I suspected they were looking a bit past it.
Following with interest for alternative suggestions!

HerArtMaterials · 09/08/2022 15:04

i always think women who worry about clothes being dated smack of middle aged insecurity. It's the adoption of what suits you and what you love that makes something current, imo.

Unless what you wear is tired and unloved, dated is a state of mind. A giant F YOU! to capitalist trend cycles is relevant here, and a mindful approach towards not creating waste.

And to my knowledge,. Fly were always niche. and niche doesn't go in or out of style. Many people hate them, so they will tell you they are dated. It's the mumsnet favourite put down isnt it? Who even thinks like this in real life, lol?

It's all about the terror of mortality, like social climbing, in a way. You know, how people on here are often afraid of buying the wrong kind of scented candle, in case they are perceived as working class. When in reality, if we work for a living and have a mortgage, we are ALL definitely working class economically, no matter how many Le Creuset crock pots we own or how often we go to the opera.
Someone will tell you, no doubt, that Fly boots are dated, which loosely translates to 'lower class' on here.
You need to content yourself with the knowledge that being free from concerns about adding to landfill and class insecurity are wonderfully progressive and fucking liberating!

HerArtMaterials · 09/08/2022 15:05

not aiming that at you op, just anticipating the (usual) replies!

GingerPigz · 09/08/2022 15:54

@twistandshoot ... I'm currently wearing veja trainers and straight leg jeans while I consider my next move - well, not actually as I write (would due of heatstroke!) Said trainers also go well with dresses (I think).

RivetingRory · 09/08/2022 16:16

I used to love them and owned a few pairs of the years. I think that yes, they area bit dated but go for it if you like them.

That's a really interesting post, thank you. Definitely food for thought.

I love the vejas but out of my price range unfortunately

Interesting perspective, @HerArtMaterials but I would never have equated "dated" with "lower class".

To be honest, the entire Style & Beauty Topic depends on the whole ebb and flow of what's perceived as fashionable or not.....but then people are at liberty to engage with that as much or as little as they wish to.

Back to your original query about Fly boot replacements, OP....the type of boots that are very popular at the moment are Chelsea boots - a little bit more chunky, and further up the leg than the traditional style. But available everywhere. I bought mine in M&S, and they weren't expensive. This style of boot is also very comfortable and hardwearing, and can be worn with pretty much anything, which is a bonus.

GruffingMouse · 16/08/2022 14:00

Are they the slightly taller Chelsey boots from M&S @CointreauVersial ?

KirstenBlest · 16/08/2022 14:00

Fly boots are good quality and comfortable. If you like them, wear them with style. I wore birkentocks before they were fashionable and when they were no longer fashionable, as well as when they were.

piefacedClique · 16/08/2022 14:10

i live in mine from October to March then switch to havainas. Wear them if you love them x

Dinneronmybfpillow · 16/08/2022 14:12

They were a work place staple in my old job and we were politely told by our student that they are "mum boots" 🤣

Friendofdennis · 16/08/2022 14:24

I love my short leather and long suede fly boots. They were quite expensive for me and I will wear them until they fall apart. I don’t care if they are considered ‘dated’. I am 60 and I think I look great. I am also 5 10 and that does help me get away with ‘quirky’.

Hakeandling · 16/08/2022 14:27

Very dated and very mum boot but I still quite like them to be honest

ShahRukhKhan · 16/08/2022 15:24

According to MN, all sorts of things are dated.

Flat shoes
Black pants & a non-black top
Leggings & dresses
Knee-length dresses
Purple and all its variants

Now apparently fly boots and the like are mum boots? Is that so inappropriate for a bunch of people on mumsnet?

There is nothing wrong with following fashions if that is what you like to do. But when I see people questioning the datedness of items they still like and feel good in, I feel a bit sad. Just wear what you want to wear, and what makes you feel good.

lemmein · 16/08/2022 15:31

Why is 'mum boot' deemed an insult? If you're a mum, and wear boots then...🤷🏻‍♀️ I don't get it! Why do people not want to look like a mum (when they most likely are a feckin mum 🤣)

lemmein · 16/08/2022 15:34

Exactly! It's a bit like the 'Karen' thing - aimed at women of a certain age. God forbid you ever look like a MUM 😲

Moonface123 · 16/08/2022 15:36

My advice would be if you like them, wear them. l am in my 50' s and wear what l like, not just what is perceived to be in fashion.
