Can't let go of my high waisted skinny jeans and feel I look dated

I'm in my 20s and I'm a pear shape. I dress in quite a classic style rather than trendy, but I've started to feel that I look dated after noticing none of my 20 or 30-something year old colleagues are wearing skinny jeans anymore. My go-to outfit for the office (smart casual) is high waisted skinny jeans, Veja trainers and some kind of blouse or smart-ish top. I was wearing skinny jeans with Converse but switched to Vejas to try and look a bit more modern lol as I had been wearing skinny jeans with Converse since I was 16...

I'm a size 16 pear shape.

Does anyone have any suggestions or advice on how to maybe update my look a bit? Like I said I tend to dress in more of a classic style rather than trendy, but I still think there's room to improve for me. I love Kate Middleton's style even though she's 10+ years older than me and half my size

Thank you

Kate seems to love her skinnies, still!
Anyway, the strange thing is that leggings are still incredibly popular, and surely skinnies are just a step up from that?
I think it's probably less to do with age and more body shape, and the only solution is to go round the shops for a massive try on session. You can see what different styles and shapes look like on you.

Valkirie · 07/08/2022 11:31

Have you tried slim fit jeans? Not so different from skinnies so the rest of your wardrobe will continue to work with them, but a looser fit will probably look more current.

dudsville · 07/08/2022 11:39

Your creating your own trap here. You like subverting and criticise yourself for liking it. That's a lose-lose situation. If you like them then embrace them!

MacKenzieMcHale · 07/08/2022 11:44

I'll be prised from my skinnies on my death bed. They're the skinniest part of me by miles and I ain't hiding them!

If you like them and they suit you, who cares?

BobbinThreadbare123 · 07/08/2022 12:17

Same as @MacKenzieMcHale . They will have to pry my black skinnies off my cold dead corpse 😄
Can't tuck anything else into my New Rocks.

MorrisZapp · 07/08/2022 12:28

Wear the clothes you like and that work for your shape.

KimmySchmitt · 07/08/2022 12:45

I'm early 30s and last year I also said I'd never give up my skinnies but there just came a point I wasn't enjoying how I looked any more. I tried on loads of styles and actually found some mom/gf styles were quite flattering. This pair especially. It sounds like your work is more casual than most but not sure if these would be a step too far?

Alternatively, would you wear things like midi dresses or jumpsuits? I find jumpsuits with baggier legs can be flattering and look a bit more modern.

Possibly not of any great comfort but in my office I only notice if people are wearing jeans or not wearing jeans.

Those wearing jeans just merge into a homogeneous crowd of jeans wearers so the finer niceties of wear style of jeans escapes my attention. I only notice on an individual level, what the not wearing jeans crowd wear.

I don't think leggings are popular at all any more. I can't believe they ever were to be honest but i defo had a pair or two. Wouldn't ever wear now tho

PandoraP · 07/08/2022 14:38

I see lots of people wear skinnies. I think they are classic now.

SecondhandTable · 07/08/2022 14:54

Wear what you like! I'm in my late 20s and also still love skinnies although currently only own one pair, and wouldn't wear skinnies to work personally (even though I could have in my old office job). I didnt wear jeans a lot to work but when I did I wore a dark denim straight leg, felt it was a bit smarter and a bit more neutral iyswim, less noticeable I suppose, as I didn't really want anyone to remember what I was wearing at work anyway.

CoconutAmericano · 07/08/2022 15:29

If you've a classic style why not try Levi 501’s. I converted from skinnies to straight leg a few mths ago and these classic Levi's fit me best (also a pear shape)

Speedweed · 07/08/2022 15:42

Stick with skinnies if you like them and they suit you, but maybe have a look at the colour, wash and length - all ways to update them but keeping the same style.

TheOGCCL · 07/08/2022 19:24

I know exactly what you mean. Skinnies really suit me and I won’t just stop wearing them but they feel somehow dated, a bit over styled, try too hard (which I never thought I’d say about jeans of any type). The relaxed shapes have more insouciance, ‘yes I just threw these on’. I’d just try looser fits, slim or straight. No need to go full paper bag overnight.

Yorkshirelass04 · 07/08/2022 19:35

Another fan of skinny jeans here and I don't care what people say!

I do agree that blue skinnies with a blouse and white trainers can look a bit 'busy Boden mum' or 'HR manager'.

So I think we have to update the items we wear our skinnies with. For example, try them with:

  • black leather / pu shirt
  • flatforms / chunky trainers
  • bright green or pink blazer
  • leopard print

Open to other ideas!!

BooksAndChooks · 07/08/2022 19:42

I feel you OP. I went on a massive ordering session and did find some relaxed fit jeans from asos in the end. I also quite like some from H and M. They look great a little turned up or cropped at the bottom for me. I wear them with white trainers or birkenstocks.

BUT I am clueless as to how to style them come autumn/winter. I think it'll look a bit silly having an inch or two of ankle out in the rain and snow, and I can't imagine them looking good with boots. Maybe back to black skinnies for then?

How would everyone else style baggy jeans in the winter?

Ringmaster27 · 07/08/2022 19:46

I’m in my late 20’s, and high waisted super skinnies are a hill I’m prepared to die on. 🤷🏻‍♀️
Ive tried every other style imaginable, and I just don’t like the way any of them look on me. So I go back to the skinnies every time.

Me too.

And actually I think if styled with the right top (a great blouse that's either a soft floppy fabric or not too structured ) and shoe (Fred Perry do some lovely lace up "pump " type shoes they can look neat and unfussy for work.

My only bugbear is they aren't comfortable in this heat Confused

BryceQuinlanTheFirst · 07/08/2022 19:54

Can you buy a load of different styles from asos and just experiment? Sometimes things look better than you imagine.

lindyloo57 · 07/08/2022 19:56

Someone else on here said leggings are out of date, not in my city, most youngsters are wearing leggings with short tops , they could be sport leggings, I see this look more than jeans.

Goldfishjones · 07/08/2022 19:58

I see lots of people wearing high waisted skinny jeans with a baggy boyfriend style t-shirt tucked into the jeans. Doesn't look dated.

yup, I have got nice ankles calves and feet and a big bum. The "wide" shape that I am supposed to wear makes me look like the south end of an elephant going north, but skinnys with a suitable top make me look casually well turned out.

jumperoozles · 07/08/2022 20:18

Tbh I still see plenty of late 20 somethings and early 30s wearing skinnies - I’m 31 and my friends are definitely a mix between skinnies and mom style so if you like them I’d just stick with them! My sister in law is 22 and her and her friends wouldn’t be seen dead now in skinnies or Vejas (I love my vejas 😂) All wear mom, straight or wide leg high waisted things. Trainers are Nike and some new balance styles are becoming popular again. Leggings are massively popular with them too - casual wear/sportswear is what they pretty much wear 80 percent of the time.

MontalbanoFan · 07/08/2022 20:18

I’ve posted before on this very subject. My view is that, if you’re pear-shaped, dark skinny jeans help to make your bottom-half “recede”.

And I don’t think they look old-fashioned in the slightest.

inmyslippers · 07/08/2022 20:22

You will have to prise my skinny jeans off my cold dead corpse. I dress in what suits me not what's it's fashion
