Can't let go of my high waisted skinny jeans and feel I look dated

I'm in my 20s and I'm a pear shape. I dress in quite a classic style rather than trendy, but I've started to feel that I look dated after noticing none of my 20 or 30-something year old colleagues are wearing skinny jeans anymore. My go-to outfit for the office (smart casual) is high waisted skinny jeans, Veja trainers and some kind of blouse or smart-ish top. I was wearing skinny jeans with Converse but switched to Vejas to try and look a bit more modern lol as I had been wearing skinny jeans with Converse since I was 16...

I'm a size 16 pear shape.

Does anyone have any suggestions or advice on how to maybe update my look a bit? Like I said I tend to dress in more of a classic style rather than trendy, but I still think there's room to improve for me. I love Kate Middleton's style even though she's 10+ years older than me and half my size

Thank you

Still love my skinny jeans. have a good few pairs. alos have splashed out on a few spanx Jean type leggings. love them. I don't wear them to the office though. my office is a more if a trousers and smart top as their smart casual. don't wear suits etc now but straight leg trousers loose shirts with a nice pair of flats or a casual dress. jeans on a Friday. my jeans now range from skinny boyfriend cropped or mom type jeans. just purchased a fab pair of French connection culotte jeans. try looking at a few bloggers on you tube and insta for ideas. lydia tomilison is very good. she gives good ideas and also very good at promoting you to use your wardrobe instead if constantly buying. don't think skinnys are gone think they are a staple now

Which Spanx leggings would you recommend? What's their sizing like? Thanks Grin

they do a sporty range and I love the booty ones. have both the moto and leather ones. they are fab with a long plain white t shirt. have the jeggings too in the denim dark denim and white. they are the only leggings that don't roll down. I am an 8 to 10 and take the small. put them on like tights roll them on to you. do worth the money commando also worth investing in

Honestly, the only people I see completely shunning skinnies in reality are kids, under 20-ish.

Im in London and I travel by tube a lot so see all manner of women of all ages and wearing a range of styles. Lots of people still in skinny or slim jeans, quite a few in flares or wide legged, Mom jeans seem to be more popular on very young women.

I’ve been travelling in Spain and France this summer and the most popular and stylish look when I’ve been out in the evenings in nice restaurants/bars has been slim jeans in shades other than blue.

londoninbloom · 08/08/2022 13:23

Thanks all, I think I will keep the skinny jeans for a little while longer at least. I don't feel right in looser jeans (e.g. mom jeans) - they just seem baggy and unflattering on me

My office is very casual. I work in marketing and everyone is really 'cool'

I read your thread as seeking ideas for moving on from skinnies rather than encouragement to stay with them? Either are fine of course but, if you've worn skinnies all your clothes-buying life (and if you're in your 20s then you quite possibly have done) then any new shape is going to look and feel weird at first and there's really no way round it. But equally there's probably no quicker or more straightforward way to freshen up your look without having to spend hours checking out magasines and influencers.

I can see how all the extra fabric in a wide leg will feel alien at first, while mom jeans tend to draw the eye to the arse which you might not want. In your shoes, I'd go for a straight leg - not too drastic and would still work with your current tops and shoes.

And / or ask your colleagues what they're wearing and where they shop. If they enjoy fashion I'm sure they'd be happy to help out.

balalake · 08/08/2022 15:33

Why change? You are wearing clothes until they wear out. Not engaging in fast fashion which is the second largest cause of climate change.

Floisme · 08/08/2022 16:44

Fair point but the op clearly isn't into fast fashion and, if she does decide to try something different, I imagine she'll wait until the next time she needs to buy jeans.

I think the baggy jean look going on now on young women just looks Uggo. Not stylish at all.

Suetodo2 · 08/08/2022 16:48

@jumperoozles

Nothing looks more poserish than those high waisted big jeans imo. Like “look at me I’m ironically not trying”
Not trying in pants jacked up to your boobs?

Blueberrywitch · 08/08/2022 16:48

I really like barrel leg jeans at the moment! Can get high waisted stretch ones and they’re really flattering. Nicer in heat as well

Same, it's all shapeless and very light denim which I dislike. At least in my skinnies I can feel smart enough for office, meetings, etc, but causal enough for working in marketing. They're easy to dress up and down for the purpose and for the season.

SquareButt · 08/08/2022 17:03

Go for slim or straight cut jeans.
You might need new tops so they are more fitted and shorter than what went with skinny jeans.
I suspect we'll see more skinny jeans around in winter as they suit British weather and boots much better than cropped and looser cuts.

WeeM · 08/08/2022 17:09

I would like to like Mom jeans but they just don’t suit me so I won’t be parting with my skinnies. My issue is I’m short and have a belly that I hide under looser tops so if I then wear looser jeans too I just don’t look right. I’m sick of seeing the flamin French tuck everywhere especially on clothing websites…I want to see if the top is long enough to cover my flabby belly! So I think my point is if you like them and they suit you then just keep with the skinnies!

dontgobaconmyheart · 09/08/2022 10:22

Im 34 and high waisted slim mom jeans are my go to, I haven't worn skinnies in a few years now and really can't imagine wearing them now. I don't have anything broadly against them, I do think they can be flattering and I like how I look in them, i just find the look dated and no longer enjoy them or feel put together in them, ditto vejas.

I find all of my tops/jumpers/shirts look much better tucked into a pair of slim mom jeans. I always think skinny jeans go with very little top wise or shoe wise and are hard to style.

What's most important is to wear what you feel like you in and feel your best in, whatever that is.

champagneplanet · 09/08/2022 10:43

I'm 40 and only wear high waisted skinnies, usually jeggings. They suit me, and other styles don't do i'm embracing it.

Go with what you like and what suits you. I spent years trying to find the 'perfect' jeans, turns out mine where M&S high waisted long length jeggings. I've got them in five colours and re-buy when they're worn out.

Skinny jeans are a winter staple for me. They tuck into ankle boots and keep me warm.
I have ditched high leg boots though… too mumsy

DottyPeacock · 11/08/2022 15:48

I wonder if your biggest mistake was swapping your converse for vejas. Converse high tops are really in at the moment. DD wears regular ones and I wear the platform ones. Or maybe try a pair of really chunky sandals. Might help make your skinnies feel a bit more up to date.

LinaDeVille · 11/08/2022 15:48

I feel the same but all my tops have been selected to go with skinnies. Ie long/baggy

I think wide leg or other styles needs something more fitted or shorter on top and they don't look right

Maybe try some dresses?

Sorry I don’t understand? Are you having a go at me about high waisted jeans? 😂
