When to not wear a bikini?

I'm 43 and around a size 12-14. Going away next week and for the first time ever feel like I'm too old for a bikini. When is it not ok to wear a bikini? Can I still get away with it with a bit of belly flab or should I go fro swim suits? I've bought 3 swim suits today but feel like it won't feel like a holiday without my bikini

If you feel happy wearing a bikini, wear one!

I never even look at other women in bikinis - fat, thin, old or young.

Having said that, I will only wear bikinis if I am feeling really toned and slim - but that says more about my issues than anything else.

I'm 57, disabled and will wear mine until they put me in my wicker coffin!

I suggest a holiday that includes either a European nudist beach or a US water park where you'll see people of all ages, shapes and sizes strutting their stuff naked or in tiny swimwear and not giving a single fuck how they look or what anyone else thinks.

endlesscraziness · 31/07/2022 22:35

@Nyancat thank you! You've made me remember to pack a swimsuit for the water park!

58 and overweight (although dieting)
I gave up bikinis about 3 years ago when I started gaining weight
Just been on holiday to canaries and there were women of every age, shape and size in bikinis
it was my epiphany so bought one next morning! Today bought a plain blue one in M n S sale to mix and match
I have gone for less skimpy bottoms than I used to though

I was in Greece a few weeks ago and everyone seemed to be in bikinis - young, old and all varying shapes and sizes. No-one gave a damn, it was so refreshing to see. I'm 59, 13 stone and size 14/16. I've been hesitant for years about wearing one and have stuck to swimsuits, but DH is hugely encouraging and says I should try one for next year if I feel comfortable. I'm going to take the plunge!

NeedWineNow · 01/08/2022 15:23

@JaceLancs love the colours in your bikinis!

RozaPoza · 01/08/2022 15:25

It's not age related. Try different styles and find one you feel comfortable in.

I am tall and slim, 53, l could wear a bikini, but l find the swim dresses more flattering and comfortable, plus practicle. l went away with my two older sons this summer, they couldn't care what l wear but l was really happy with my pretty swimwear, got it off Amazon.

I've threatened ds that I'm getting my arse cheeks out 2m. I won't, but I've never felt less self conscious in a bikini at size 16/18 as there are women of every shape and size rocking them on my holiday

Pushymum · 05/08/2022 18:21

You are not too old! Women in Mediterranean countries rock it in bikinis and show off their bodies whatever shape and size. I was inspired in Greece by a 50 year old woman wearing a thong. I am 63 and last year I wore a thong on the beach and my husband was so delighted it put paid to any body anxiety. By the way I am size 12 to 14 with a belly! Freedom!

When you feel happier in something else.
For me, thats this year, but its nothing to do with age. I've lost a fair bit of weight and am now for the first time in my life, a size 8 with a really good shape. Unfortunately at 53, my skin didn't have the elasticity to cope and I've a wrinkly stomach. I couldn't care less what other people would think, no one would be looking at me I'm sure, but I don't like looking at it myself. I'd much rather feel fabulous in my new body wearing a one piece to cover up the bits that spoil me.

Im 44 and just bought my first bikini post kids. Can't bloody wait to get it on. I'd wear a costume for sporty stuff - waterparks, exercise etc but for the beach and pool I'm going to wear the bikini. Im also the biggest I've ever been but I just don't care.

astarsheis · 19/04/2023 17:44

I'm 58 size 8-10 and will forever wear bikinis. Age is irrelevant especially on foreign beaches. You plenty of older, larger ladies bikinis. Get out there and be proud of that body.... but like previous poster said...do not wear it in restaurants, to the shops or promenade. I always wear a beach cover or something. It's just common decency.

CorsicaDreaming · 19/04/2023 17:51

Definitely take your bikinis too - when I'm in the UK, I think I won't want to wear a bikini, too exposed...

get out to the Med and everyone is wearing them - skinny, fat, middling, young, old alike...

perhaps take a nice costume too (or a Tankini?) but also pack your bikini!

agapanthus1979 · 19/04/2023 19:16

When you're on a nudist beach.
Had my first such experience last year and found it so liberating.
Come on, women! We're ace, whatever size and shape we are. The best thing we can do is wear what the hell we want, flaunt or not as we wish, and just embrace who we are, and not give a shiny fuckery fuck what anyone else thinks.
I've had a couple of beers (topless in the garden 😉)
