When to not wear a bikini?

I'm 43 and around a size 12-14. Going away next week and for the first time ever feel like I'm too old for a bikini. When is it not ok to wear a bikini? Can I still get away with it with a bit of belly flab or should I go fro swim suits? I've bought 3 swim suits today but feel like it won't feel like a holiday without my bikini

Love the positive vibes but why can't it be ok to just wear a cossie? Must we bare our bodies to the max in order to 'live life to the full'?

Nobody has said that. Wear what you’re comfortable with. That’s the point. Whether it be a wetsuit or a G-String.

Exactly HotDogKetchup

Never. I’m in my fifties and not thin but always wear a bikini on holiday. Like the sun in my belly, and I look even older and fatter in a one piece. Plus I like the bra style for my giant boobs 😄

Flopisfatteningbingforchristmas · 31/07/2022 10:24

I saw someone in a biniki in the North Sea last week. That would be a no for me
because she must have been freezing but she seemed fine.

Like @smileandsing says there are inappropriate places.

I wear a bikini at size 14-16 and 13 stone.
When I go abroad to Europe I see most women in bikinis or even topless (or naked on certain beaches) in all shapes and sizes and ages.
I would personally never wear less than a bikini but seeing other bigger and older women happy to strip off makes me feel more confident.

Campervangirl · 31/07/2022 10:31

Mid 50s, not in too bad shape, size 12/14 but I hate bikinis, I wear one then put a strapless tankini top over it, blouson type so they're not skin tight.
I can lay on a sunbed and roll it up then back down when I get up.
I just feel really uncomfortable in just a bikini.
Otoh you see all shapes and sizes on holiday, other people don't really take any notice, for me it's just a personal choice, I want to feel comfortable.
I also cut the boob holders out of my tankini's cos they're always so tight 😂, I also go a size up, I buy them from Simply Be

When you don't want to.

When you don't want to.

This is the best response

Abra1d1 · 31/07/2022 10:34

I think bikinis are more flattering than tankinis, which can look a bit frumpy.

I’m 58.

For a job interview

exactly. it’s about activities (not bodies)

job interview, trip to Tesco, ice climbing… probably not bikini activities.

Beach or swimming on holiday… definitely bikini activities.

Greenfrog78 · 31/07/2022 10:37

Just come back from spain, hardly seen any one piece swimsuits. All ages and sizes had bikinis on. All kinds of styles in 46 and all wore full piece but decided to go for it this year and pleased it did.But make sure it's well fitting if going waterpark.

Greenfrog78 · 31/07/2022 10:38

Should say I'm 46. And size 16/18.

Arnaquer · 31/07/2022 10:40

I'm 50, I wear a bikini and paddle board. Be who you want to be.

wheeliegood · 31/07/2022 10:41

I'm 44 and could loose a few pounds but ok overall. But I have a massive bum and flabby thighs. Swimming costume wouldn't help! I'm also a true pear (16 on bottom, 12 on top) so I have to wear bikinis as I can't get swimming costumes (or dresses) to fit! I wear with pride and I think it's only now, at 44, I'm beginning to embrace my curves and not care so much!

SirChenjins · 31/07/2022 10:47

Depends on the bikini and where you are. A thong bikini on a small beach in Scotland (yep, that’s you, lady yesterday on a family fun day when everyone else was in trousers, shorts or wetsuits - it was a bit full moon to say the least), or the same type of bikini at a public swimming pool, or water park - not so much. Thank god men in general haven’t gone down the thong route.

Luredbyapomegranate · 31/07/2022 10:53

Why would you wear a swimsuit and not a bikini? People wear bikinis when they’re 80, crack on

StarlightLady · 31/07/2022 11:00

@SirChenjins - Very judgemental.

SirChenjins · 31/07/2022 11:12

Yep. No need for anyone’s arse cheeks to be on display in a council swimming pool.

I’m not sure. There are bikinis and bikinis. Not all of them are suitable for the local pool or a standard beach really.

People should dress for the occasion. A thong bikini is not necessary a reasonable choice.

Oblomov22 · 31/07/2022 11:21

Always worn a bikini. Just don't care. Now overweight. Still don't care. I just don't 'get' your view. If you don't want to wear one, don't. Can't see the issue.

WouldBeGood · 31/07/2022 11:23

@SirChenjins I’m reliably informed that those thong bikinis are now being sighted at the pool at my gym ! 😱

I blame Love Island

Another reason to stay away from the gym 😂
Love Island has a lot to answer for on so many levels.

LoobyDop · 31/07/2022 12:44

It’s not appropriate for work, unless you’re a lifeguard. Or for going to the supermarket. Or weddings, funerals or christenings. And I’d think twice about it if I was meeting a partner’s family for the first time.

HumourReplacementTherapy · 31/07/2022 21:30

When men start wearing all in ones to cover their beer bellies.
Why should women cover their stomachs up?
Best thing about going away is that you see all shapes and sizes in bikinis.

TheBikiniExpert · 31/07/2022 22:05

Wear the bikini if you want to!
