My feet appear to have got bigger

😳
I have finally admitted to myself that none of my shoes are comfortable, couldn't work out why as no visible swelling, no particular change in activity, etc. Problems with big toenail starting to Ingrow, generally unhappy feet.
I measured myself with the shoe guage I bought for the kids in lock down and it seems to be because I have gone up a shoe size!
Late 40s, in perimenopause, overweight but losing slowly.
Is it just me?

No! My feet have flattened, I think, and I’m a size bigger than 10 years ago (early 50’s now). I’ve finally started buying bigger trainers and sneakers, sizing still a bit all over the place with other shoes.

I think it was exacerbated by wearing slippers throughout lockdown 😂

Musicaltheatremum · 30/07/2022 20:24

Get checked for acromegaly. Very rare but also very treatable.

BreakfastClub80 · 30/07/2022 20:24

PS I have also lost almost an inch in height - I’m turning into a hobbit 😳

travailtotravel · 30/07/2022 20:24

Wider with peri, smaller with weight loss!

Crackercrazy · 30/07/2022 20:25

After 3 pregnancies my feet are bigger than they were. Must have been the additional weight I was carrying! They’ve kind of splayed more so are wider than they used to be. Went from a size 6 to 6.5-7 and have to have wide-fit now.

Ikeameatballs · 30/07/2022 20:26

Mine are shrinking! Steady size 4 all my adult life. Mid 40s and now find that a 3.5 or even a 3 is a better fit. No notable weight loss.

JenniferAllisonPhillipaSue · 30/07/2022 20:34

No weight change here, definitely in peri. My adult shoe size has gone from 5, to 5.5 in my late 30s, to size 6 now I'm over 50. I've come to the conclusion that it's gravity at work, pulling more weight down to my feet ...

SpeedofaSloth · 30/07/2022 23:02

Right, if anyone is looking for me I will be listing all my beautiful now too-small shoes on Vinted 😭

There's a theory that our feet were allowed to spread more in lockdown as you generally didn't wear shoes as much, and even now people wfh might not have their feet in shoes. I feel like mine got wider which is good as they were far too narrow for the length.

GoodbyeErinsborough · 30/07/2022 23:41

I'm the opposite.
As a teenager I was size 6.
Im now 37. Last time I had my feet measured (in Clarks when I was getting the dc measured) I was a 5.5.
Last week I bought a pair of trainers. Size 5.

If anything I have put on weight.

EllenWaiteourkid · 30/07/2022 23:43

I lost five and a half stone six years ago, have kept all but four pounds off, but more interestingly I also dropped a shoe size.

mackthepony · 31/07/2022 02:19

Do you have kids? Mine grew a bit after childbirth

GreekGod · 31/07/2022 10:18

No, its not you. I found that when I put on weight, I went up a shoe size (size 7) and then when I lost the weight, I went down to my normal shoe size (size 6).

bigTillyMint · 31/07/2022 10:29

I haven’t gained any weight, and I don’t think my feet have got any wider, but my size 6 trainers are feeling slightly short - need a 6.5 or 7 now I think.

PeaceLoveAndCandy · 31/07/2022 10:31

I went up a size with each pregnancy, so went from size 4 all my adult life to my current size 6.

Exactly.
I think in one’s late 40s everything goes south - bosom, bottom, chin and even calves as I can no longer get my made-to-measure riding boots on even though I’m the same weight as I was 20 years ago.
My feet have gone up from5 to 6 as a result, as you say, of gravity.

SirVixofVixHall · 31/07/2022 11:19

Mine have grown wider from being barefoot or in socks all through lockdown I think. That and getting fatter too. All my shoes feel tight and hurt my feet.

GettingMarriedAgain · 31/07/2022 11:27

Mine went up from 7 to 7.5 but without getting any wider - as they are quite thin it makes it very hard to find shoes that fit! I put it down to doing lots of walking but I think it’s just something that happens to some of us after having children/getting older.

SpeedofaSloth · 31/07/2022 15:03

That's the bit I don't get - wider I can understand, but longer (like mine) just seems nuts!!

OP posts:
bigTillyMint · 31/07/2022 15:11

I know!
I thought maybe they’ve lengthened because the instep has dropped, but I don’t think mine has

AuntieMarys · 31/07/2022 15:13

Mine grew a shoe size when I was pregnant

wherethemonkeyssing · 01/08/2022 10:17

I tried to wear heels at work last week and ended up hobbling by the end of the day. I'd even picked a pair which were my "comfy" heels. Thinking about it I probably last wore heels properly in 2018 before having DD (born in 2019). I got back from mat leave 6 weeks before lockdown so possibly didn't notice my feet had grown in pregnancy.

EhatBow · 01/08/2022 10:22

I'd bet your arches have dropped. The feet aren't "bigger" but flatter, so measure longer.

DH went up two sizes in his late 40s

Letsbekindplease · 01/08/2022 10:53

I went from a size 5 toa size 6 after my first born. They never returned to the smaller size. I still hold out hope and hang onto my Russel & Bromley boots …just incase lol

MyrtlethePurpleTurtle · 01/08/2022 11:17

I’m the same, OP. I have so many ‘thank you’ texts from people on my local FreeCycle group who now have elegant nearly news Hobbs and LK Bennett patent high heels for smart office dressing.

I blame age and pre lockdown abandonment of heels when office wear became more casual
