Clothing for yoga

Am new to it and may be starting a class locally.

Just a bit confused about what will be appropriate, a vest preferable in summer but not loose as will ride up, although not so tight it restricts me.
For another layer in case temp drops, most tshirts would ride up!

What do other people wear? I see a lot of imagery online but it seems geared towards brand affiliation and perhaps unnecessary expense. Maybe I'm wrong?

I have some M&S capri leggings, so no issues with bottom half, but really confused about what's best for on top. I have a yoga vest with a built in bra but it is so difficult to get on and off it gives me the rage. I suppose all vests with built in bra's will be uncomfortable won't they?

I prefer strappy rather than wide vests, am a small build so don't need a ton of support, and I hate bra's in general, ah for a comfy solution that will give me dignity as well as comfort!

Any advice welcome.

Ask the organiser maybe?

Love yoga ! Sports bra, leggings and a top that doesn't fall up when you're in downward dog. Honestly, it doesn't matter - I've done it in tracksuit bottoms and DH's Tshirt.. and in my pyjamas at home . The whole point of yoga is to relax and enjoy so just make sure you're comfortable .. but if you are investing in leggings can I suggest don't go for the mega slippery ones as it's harder to hold tree pose .. also go for a higher waist which is helpful

dreamingofsun · 29/07/2022 16:20

i wear fairly tight fitting old tshirts (vests in summer and vests or longer sleeve in winter) and leggings that dont have a super tight waist band. I have several sports bras that dont have wiring. Some people buy sports tops but i'm too tight. Loose fitting yoga pants are good in summer if its hot.

serenedream · 30/07/2022 13:53

Thanks! I learned not to wear socks whilst attempting tree pose Grin

I was thinking for summer a tight but soft vest, like the strappy one's at primark. I would be happy to spend more but can't find anything I like at the usual places - john lewis, SB, etc.

The second layer bothers me though, like a light jumper or long sleeve tee. Is it best to use synthetics?

I wondered about those cropped ballet wraps dancers wear for an extra arm layer on cooler days.

So what do people think of the vests with a bra shelf? I think they're a great thing but so, so uncomfortable!

I got some sports tops in Next, they have good vests too at the moment

Yogateacherherehello · 30/07/2022 19:33

Comfortable layers that don't reveal anything when you're bent over.
Ignore social media pics - you don't need brands, you do need room for movement and the flexibility to peel off a layer if it's strenuous and add it back for relaxation.
Keep socks handy for relaxation but better to remove them for the postures.

serenedream · 30/07/2022 20:00

Thank you, I agree about brands and how overpriced they are.

What I am finding difficult is the summer vest. I want something long enough that doesn't sag or ride up, but most places are offering cropped vests, which is really annoying. Sweaty Betty used to do a lovely padded yoga vest that I found on ebay for next to nothing, but I managed to damage it during a house move Blush

Even M&S are thin on the ground. Primark was only offering dark colours and grey marl (hate it!)...agh! I would love a nice muted blue or pink/beige vest in decent fabric that was longish and comfy.

I wear a thick pair of jogging bottoms (mostly supermarket ones) and a long sleeved thermal/base layer type top.

I get too cold during Shavasana wearing anything less.

katepilar · 30/07/2022 20:21

I wear any pair of leggings I can find and a vest top. YOu dont want the top that is too loose as you will be doing bending down and want to keep your boobs in. I dont wear a bra yoga or otherwise. My yoga studio provides blankets.

EBearhug · 30/07/2022 20:25

Cheap leggings, t-shirt with lycra from Lidl, soft bratop. I have some sort of jumper and socks for the end. I also have blanket, bit only tend to use that in winter.

My yoga teacher has socks with grips for winter, because her feet get cold.

Wildlynx · 30/07/2022 20:29

Bam have some nice gathered vests an tees, currently on sale.

HastaLaBisto · 30/07/2022 20:44

Seconding Bam - especially the tops with bands around the hem that don't fall open during inversions.

MaChienEstUnDick · 30/07/2022 20:45

I just tuck a loose top in?

serenedream · 30/07/2022 21:44

Thank you! I have been at home mostly, doing it in my bedroom for a few weeks, so I am used to it being so hot i need the fan on me when i practice!

I imagine colder rooms, a studio, etc, especially in colder months will be quite different, I plan to get some leg warmers Grin

I love Bam, and there's a sale on! I like the tshirt with a gathered hem but it looks really long and baggy on the model, so it might swamp me. At just over a tenner tho0ugh i might give it a go.
I did buy a bra from them a few months ago and it has literally no support whatsoever. By this i mean i may as well have not worn ANY bra. I am only small in that dept, but hoping their other items are more robust.

I just tuck a loose top in?

I thought this earlier, i have a tight-ish tshirt that i love and considered wearing this tucked into my lightweight joggers with a comfort bra underneath.
Leggings make me too hot in summer.

dreamingofsun · 31/07/2022 11:54

lands end had some vest tops in the sale that were quite long - i had to return them because of that but they might suit your needs. In the winter i tend to put a sweat top on post session, but people also wear jumpers. in summer i sometimes wear a pair of loose trousers with elastic waste as they are cooler. as long as you can move and dont show your stomach and correct temperature noone really cares

LeeMiller · 31/07/2022 22:49

I prefer sportswear for yoga and Pilates as I find it more comfortable to sweat in and I don’t like cotton leggings or shorts, or lumpy waistbands/seams when I’m lying on a mat. Nike and Sweaty Betty are good, ASOS often have yoga stuff in the sale. Decathalon is good value. Free people and Girlfriend Collective stuff is lovely but pricey.
The warm layer is when you’re less active at the end so I don’t find it matters too much, just nothing too baggy. I just pop a slim-fitting sweatshirt or long sleeved t-shirt on. I pull my tops with built in bras down rather than over my head to avoid dislocating a shoulder!
Yoga studios and gyms tend to be kept warm, I doubt you’ll need leg warmers except for the walk home, unless you are going to classes in a church hall.

AdelaideRo · 01/08/2022 11:11

Decathlon leggings are good. I've got some domyos ones that are almost as nice as my sweaty betty/ fabletics ones which cost multiples more.

However you do need to try them on. I had some terrible ones from Tu which kept falling down!

Sympathies re: the t-shirts. I'm yet to find the holy grail pilates top. I currently flash fairly regularly in downward dog (but as a lot of my class mates do the entire class in a cropped top/ sports bra thing I"ve decided it doesn't really matter!).

WeRateSquirrels · 01/08/2022 12:35

I usually wear leggings (BAM or SB, cropped in summer), sports bra (SB Stamina) and slim fit vest (SB Athlete). Also have some BAM t-shirts that are more fitted around the hips so they don't ride up. For my warmer layer I just use whatever hoodie/jumper/sweatshirt is closest.

drspouse · 01/08/2022 12:47

I do Pilates but I just tuck my t-shirt in if it rides up (and I do yoga at home in the front room and ditto - I often do it in just my pyjamas).
I have a BAM hoodie and an ancient synthetic one that I think is from TK Maxx. Just make sure you don't lie on the hood and then try to strangle yourself.

ArabeI · 01/08/2022 12:58

I wear leggings when the weather is cooler or shorts. I just wear my running shorts, favourites are those with the lycra shorts underneath and a shorter layered short on top. All Sweaty Betty. Leggings are yoga leggings, or power leggings which are favourite for yoga. I tried wearing my super sculpt leggings and I don't find them as comfortable. I also sometimes wear Brooks running leggings as they're comfortable. I did try M & S Goodmove brand leggings for a while, and they were fine initially but haven't worn well, so I use those at home or for a muddy run.

I wear a yoga crop top underneath a mesh three quarter length sleeve top (like SB dynamic or dharana- I have those in a few colours), so I can take it off if hot. Or just a fitted yoga vest as alternative. I have a crop ballet style top, as you mentioned, OP, also SB but I don't know if they still sell them. It's lovely with long sleeves, but I save for cooler days.

I wear sports trainer liners on feet, but at home I wear split sole canvas ballet shoes.

HelenHywater · 01/08/2022 18:39

I have quite a few bamboo vests with inbuilt bras from Sweaty Betty. Don't find them at all uncomfortable. They are quite hot when it's really hot though and I'm better in just a bra top then.

I always wear leggings or cycling shorts. Mine are from Sweaty Betty or Lululemon. I have seen too many gynaecological views of other women to wear something I'm not sure is 100% squat proof.

In terms of a top layer, I don't think it matters. When it's cold I have 2 top layers - a fitted long sleeve tee shirt and a jumper or hoodie. You only wear the jumper or hoodie at the start and for savasana. I don't like loose tops that kind of flop around but lots of people do wear those tops with a yoga bra underneath. Right now I just wear one layer.

PegasusReturns · 01/08/2022 20:13

I love sweaty Betty or M&S leggings.

PegasusReturns · 01/08/2022 20:16

That’s weird only half my message posted.

I always wear a strappy vest and a t shirt because I don’t like exposing my midriff. Next have great light weight v neck Ts. Not found better anywhere.

easyday · 01/08/2022 21:09

In my yoga class people generally wear leggings and a loose cropped t shirt, regular or fitted t. I don't recall many wearing vests but it is an older group.
To be honest nobody cares what people are wearing. As long as you can move freely wear what you like.
