Anticipating that I am going to be trying to put the heating on, well basically never! can anyone recommend anything like onesies or oodies or thermal stuff they are going to buy to ensure their bodies are warm at home?
I know we are just emerging from a heat wave and all that but I am really worried about it now and would like to be well prepared in advance for both myself and my kids (aged 13 girl and 11 boy).

Any recommendations much appreciated.

I buy the sheepskin slippers in the sales. Got one pair from House of Bruar for £35. Just bought husband a pair (boootie style) for £38. they are so different to regular slippers.

I am waging war on winter and am determined not to waste money on heating. I will do whatever it takes!

I’ve just bought 3 oodies off everything £5.com. Found them on a fb site, people have bought them and when they’ve got them they’ve been proper branded oodies or cuddlies. Fingers crossed mine are too. Also debating getting electric blankets and a ninja multi cooker! I know the outlay is expensive but will be worth it in the long run. I can’t believe in this day and age we are having to ration gas and electricity.

It's also on the Style and Beauty board... I bought a cashmere jumper new from M&S in the sale last year for £20 and a merino wool jumper from Vinted for £5 so its not as ridiculous a suggestion to save money as you

To repeat. To recommend an outlay of 90 euros each for pairs of sheepskin slippers for all the family is going to be beyond many people, and those who are struggling to purchase basic food and pay their bills. I wouldn't mention it on a thread like this, personally. It's not a money saving for those people who cannot afford the outlay.

You'd be fortunate to find even secondhand decent cashmere for £20.00, though I don't really rate M & S cashmere, and for £20 new in the sale I'm guessing it 'contains' cashmere.

So the slippers are too expensive, but M&S cashmere isn't 'decent' enough? I guess people shouldn't bother trying to dress warmer and just suck up £300 a month in bills over the winter months O_o.

Comprehension? I said I didn't rate it, and I don't, not as far as the 'keeping warm' benefits of cashmere are concerned. I didn't use the word decent in relation to the M & S cashmere. I certainly wouldn't recommend buying something as expensive as cashmere on a thread like this, and when people are struggling, obviously.

Hmm how you got that from my post when I said nothing of the kind. Talk about missing the point.

Kitting your family in 90 euro per pair slippers will cost not far off £300 minimum (depending on size of family). That is beyond most people.

I bought thermal socks from amazon last year, well my son bought me them. Worked brilliantly as I have laminate floors which are icy including the rest of the house in Winter. I have lots of rugs which do not seem to make any difference.
I am now wary of heated throws having had to send two back as they did not heat up all the way through. I may try a sleeping bag with a hot water bottle instead.
I use my slow cooker a lot, but have read if used for eight hours it actually costs more than using the oven or hob for a much shorter period of time.
Tbh at the end of the day I know we are talking about 'heat the person, not the house' but when the air is cold all around you it is really miserable.
Basically my home is cold whether I heat it or not, large living room, old radiators, boiler needs replacing etc. I have done what I can to eliminate draughts and fitted new windows throughout.
In the evenings after work when on my own I will be going upstairs really early and read or watch tv in bed as I have done the last couple of years. At least if I heat the bedroom for a bit I feel the benefit quite quickly as it is a smaller room.
I have bought a higher tog duvet which was half price which I will swap over when it starts to get colder.
I cannot imagine ever having the heating on overnight as some people on here do. It gives me the rage to think I will be paying more this year to be freezing.

Apparently, there are electric gilets that you can wear too, but I'm not sure whether these are any better than layering up? As I WFH, I struggled to get my legs and hands warm last winter. (I was wearing normal clothes inc. a cashmere jumper with a dressing gown, warm hat, scarf and fingerless gloves.)

If the electric gilets are better, which one do you recommend, and how much do they cost electric-wise?

Thanks.

orangetriangle · 08/08/2022 21:21

I have bought an electric blanket I have hot water bottle and heated bean cushion also have heated electric throw we have fleece teddy bedding
I also have thermal tops and long John's find that makes a massive difference and have a number of fleece tops and thick jumpers medium thickness jumpers and light jumpers gradually build it up as it gets colder
also have thick woolly slippers and woolly socks makes a big difference and fingerless gloves and scarf work from home 3 days so all this makes a massive difference

Cassimin · 13/08/2022 00:31

I’ve just recieved my kuddly hoodies and also got a weighted blanket for my son so thanks for the recommendation.
Ive just been reading through the posts though and it really is so sad that we are at this stage.
working in long johns and fingerless gloves, it’s like going back in time!!!
it’s a shocking state of affairs, we really are being taken advantage of, I despair for people on benefits who can’t cut their cloth, tighten their belts or earn any more money. I don’t know what but something needs to be done.
when I hear of all of these privatised companies making billions it really makes my blood boil.

I really recommend this. I purchased it for the winter 2020 lockdown (dh wouldn’t turn the heating on during the day!) and it is so warm. It’s not flattering and the Pom poms are really heavy and annoying, so they were cut off, but you it’s so incredibly toastie. www.johnlewis.com/john-lewis-pom-pom-fleece-onesie/p4751614

Can anyone recommend the most electricity cost efficient air fryer? I am sure this has been done many times before on MN so sorry for the question but if you can recommend something (single mum teenage boy 12 (hungry) teenage daughter (less hungry)) would prefer not to cook in shifts but I understand they don't fit much food? Are they really much more energy efficient than my electric oven? thanks in anticipation

millymog11 · 03/09/2022 15:03

air fryers
£187 compared with £269 (which would allow me to cook once) seems a bit jump price wise. Is there a cheaper large air fryer anyone can recommend?

QuentininQuarantino · 03/09/2022 15:20

s&B wise.

I will take my sweaty Betty ski base layers out of my ski-drobe and into my everyday wardrobe. I bought some ugg boots on eBay. Also got ridiculously cheap wool leggings and top from Zara’s collaboration with the New York ballet in the sale. And Irish Aran hand knit jumpers and cardigans found on eBay. I was eying up vests the other day too!
