Anticipating that I am going to be trying to put the heating on, well basically never! can anyone recommend anything like onesies or oodies or thermal stuff they are going to buy to ensure their bodies are warm at home?
I know we are just emerging from a heat wave and all that but I am really worried about it now and would like to be well prepared in advance for both myself and my kids (aged 13 girl and 11 boy).

Any recommendations much appreciated.

Uniqlo's heattech thermals, for kids and adults, will keep everyone toastie.

Yes I love these. M&S for kids are quite good too.

Only had the heating on 3 times last winter.

We have Kidd.ly jumpers (like Oodie's) and ugg boots. Nice and toasty !

Perimenopause mainly 😆but clothing wise I will be sticking to MS thermals, cashmere jumpers and real sheepskin bootie slippers. I will get dd and dh more thermals and new sheepskin slippers too. Might treat dh to some cashmere jumpers too. Thanks for the depop tip earlier!

could you link to the shop? I am ready to buy.

Cassimin · 06/08/2022 20:33

Thank you Mumto7moboy
ive just ordered 4. What a bargain! Got a free eye mask too.
I was going to make the family join the library to go somewhere warm. We can sit in around candles now instead!😂

Sheepskin bootie slippers . I got these last winter and they are just gorgeous. So so cosy, especially with the ankle bit turned up. The sole is rubber kind of material not foam (?) so not slippy at all and more durable.

Dox9 · 06/08/2022 20:49

If they are a bit too pricey, Etsy has more reasonable alternatives and tk maxx usually stocks some closer to Christmas.

LivingDeadGirlUK · 06/08/2022 20:59

I'm considering moving our work desks into the living room, and TV into the office. The office is above the garage so the coldest room in the house, so my partner has the heating on all day and still sometimes uses an electric heater in the office too.

We have thermal tops, slipper boots and I like wearing a wooly hat but if you are on a computer all day its the hands and fingers that get chilly.

If your working from home getting up and moving around regularly helps. My main problem is a partner who is incapable of dressing himself or dealing with changes in temperature other than by putting the heating on, or opening windows, and constantly moans unless its exactly 20deg...

millymog11 · 06/08/2022 21:07

Dox9 the sheepskin booties seem to be out of stock do you know when they are nextn in?

Gillybobs · 06/08/2022 22:56

Primark fleece lined opaque tights. Trust me. Life changing.

JesusMaryAndJosephAndTheWeeDon · 07/08/2022 10:23

The Primark version of heat holder leggings, they are like fake fur on the inside and are incredibly comfortable. I wear them all winter at home and they are thick enough to wear outdoors too if leggings are your thing.

Merino wool or silk thermals are much better than synthetic, a long sleeved thermal under a shirt/jumper adds warmth much better than cotton. Look out for ones with thumb holes so your wrists and hands stay warm.

Heat holders socks or real wool ones.

LivingDeadGirlUK · 07/08/2022 11:42

Does no one else get a sweaty crotch with fleece leggings or trousers? :/ I can do long fleecy socks but even fleecy PJs get me all sweaty.

millymog11 · 07/08/2022 11:45

I've just noticed the BBC article "warning people against cancelling their direct debit on 1st October". This seems a bit heavy handed. Surely it is up to individuals what they want to do?

Goldmember · 07/08/2022 12:07

Thermal leggings, fleece hoodie, fluffy socks and lambskin boots. Not sexy but warm. I have a few thermal vests too.

Goldmember · 07/08/2022 12:09

Snuddie hoodie (primark oodie dupe) for us all, Stocked up now ready for winter.

palygold · 07/08/2022 12:12

This is a thread about beating the energy bills. Cashmere jumpers and €90.00 sheepskin bootie slippers is a joke surely and rather tone deaf.

CinnamonJellyBeans · 07/08/2022 12:28

I actually agree with the sheepskin slippers. Cheap slippers have to be replaced each year and just feel shite on your feet. Sheepskin slippers should last a long long time if they're only worn indoors. The good ones can be washed gently with the correct detergent.

I will not be having the heating on until the kids are home from uni for Christmas, then off again in January. I have bought electric throws for me and DH, as it's cheaper to heat a person than heat a room. If I get cold or stiff, dance to Alexa for 5 mins. TBH, I'm lucky as I don't feel the cold as long as my feet are warm (hence decent slippers), so i have two hot water bottles for my feet in bed and thin bedcovers. Shower on a lower temperature

The cats have got igloo bets, with an extra blanket under the cushion and when it gets really cold, microwave hot water bottles that don't get too hot, but will retain heat for 8 hours +. The dog has jumpers and microwave pads.

Based on mumsnet recommendations, I have bought turtle dove wrist warmers and fingerless gloves, also Lux Lux merino underwear (starts at size 12 I think) as gifts. they look good. Also mountain warehouse merino thermals, which were not as nice as Lux Lux, but came in smaller sizes.

KangarooKenny · 07/08/2022 12:32

Socks and fleecy socks, brushed cotton PJ’s, an Oodie style fleece and fingerless gloves.

FourChimneys · 07/08/2022 12:49

I have bought a few long sleeved t-shirts from charity shops. I will wear them in layers under jumpers, two or even three if necessary. I want to have quite a few so I have enough to fill a washing machine, it's wasteful to put on half a load.

Two pairs of socks and good slippers.

My neck gets cold so I'll be digging out scarves to deal with that.

An outlay of €90 per person for a pair of slippers will be beyond a lot of people. Surely you can see that.

It's also on the Style and Beauty board... I bought a cashmere jumper new from M&S in the sale last year for £20 and a merino wool jumper from Vinted for £5 so its not as ridiculous a suggestion to save money as you make out.

To repeat. To recommend an outlay of 90 euros each for pairs of sheepskin slippers for all the family is going to be beyond many people, and those who are struggling to purchase basic food and pay their bills. I wouldn't mention it on a thread like this, personally. It's not a money saving for those people who cannot afford the outlay.

You'd be fortunate to find even secondhand decent cashmere for £20.00, though I don't really rate M & S cashmere, and for £20 new in the sale I'm guessing it 'contains' cashmere.

Ladyofthepeonies · 07/08/2022 16:29

I’ll admit the cashmere jumper I got was in the mens section but at £18 I had to have it. Just wish the pink one was the same price.
