fallen out of love with Body Shop ginger shampoo/ please help fix my dry scalp!

In the last year I’ve had small patches of dryness on my scalp (mainly around hairline/ an inch or 2 back from hairline) that seem to be slowly spreading a bit. Read about the magical ginger shampoo a few months ago and it worked for me! But since then it seems to have stopped working as well plus my hair now gets really oily quickly. Now having to wash hair every other day rather than every 5ish days (I know this sounds gross but my hair genuinely takes ages to get dirty. Or it did).

i don’t think it’s dandruff as such, it seems to be ‘dry scalp’ (didn’t realise there was a difference until recently). I have also tried ketoconazole shampoo and the usuals (head and shoulders/ vosene etc).

has anyone used that scalp treatment from the ordinary and found it to be good?

thanks

Honestly but MooGoo shampoo and conditioner. Within 2 weeks you’ll be so much better.

I tried so much for YEARS. Used this now for 5 years plus. If I use anything else it starts again.

100% agree. It is superb and has also helped with dry skin on my body which is no longer irritated when shampoo / conditioner goes on it. Totally brilliant product.

They seem to do a scalp cream too for dry areas. I will definitely give this a go and hope it’s not more wasted money! Thanks for recommendations. I considered trying coconut oil on the patches overnight but I have no idea how I’d even begin to remove coconut oil from hair effectively

It won’t be a waste. Let me see if they do a value pack /referral.

This currently works for me (again, after the ginger shampoo from body shop stopped helping)

Just a word of warning. You don’t need to use too much. It doesn’t foam like most shampoos. This took a while to get used to! The pump dispenser makes it last ages.

I’ve used that before (years ago) and don’t remember being v impressed by it but I’ll add it to my mental list thanks

I like the Liz Earle shampoo and conditioners, not the cheapest but you can often get multi-buys or other offers. I also have very fine greasy hair with dry patches. I also like the Shea Moisture hair masks which I massage in around the hair line - can't remember what it is called but the pack is orange and it smells of coconut and I get it from Boots. Never tried a ginger shampoo so can't comment on that and I have never bought anything from The Body Shop since they were so awful about JK Rowling.

is the Shea mask a Liz Earle product or a different brand? Thanks

I get Sebco ointment on prescription for my psoriasis. It's a coconut oil based ointment but washes out easily. I put it on overnight and wear a silk hair cap.

sixtiesbaby88 · 24/07/2022 21:13

Any detergent free shampoo will help. There are loads out there now without sodium laureate sulphate, Holland and Barrett have a good selection

i switched to SLS a couple of years ago (can’t remember why now) and lost what felt like half my hair every time I used it! It was OGX and that’s made me nervous to try it again

I've only just found the Body Shop ginger shampoo and am quite happy with it so far, so disappointed to hear it stops working after a while! Am saving this thread for when it does so I have other options to try (thanks to all for your suggestions). Can I ask how long you were using the ginger shampoo before it stopped working?

PotatoFamily · 25/07/2022 01:10

I’ve had psoriasis for twenty years and they ALL stop working after a while. You have to mix them up every three months or so

Snoopsnoggysnog · 25/07/2022 01:53

This thread is really interesting.

I have developed a really itchy / dry scalp over the last couple of years and have fallen out of love with the ginger shampoo since someone said it strips colour out of your hair AND as someone said upthread - I no longer wish to spend money at the body shop since they were such arseholes about JKR.

i have been using a Nioxin shampoo with a minty smell that is pretty good.
the other thing that’s helped is coconut oil. I’m not applying to scalp directly but seems to help with itching. Not sure how that works.

@Summersdreaming do you apply that directly to scalp?

OP, I also found that when I tried SLS free shampoo for a while after having a keratin treatment. Literally made my hair fall out, hair dresser said they’d never had anyone with that problem before.

sashh · 25/07/2022 02:50

I have psoriasis so I get shampoo on prescription. I use Alphosyl but you can buy it over the counter, it costs about £10 but lasts for ages and you only need a tiny bit.

@redlou123 it was good for me for about 10 months then just completely stopped working.

chatw0o0 · 25/07/2022 11:52

I've got patches of psoriasis on my scalp and I use Phillip Kingsley Itchy Flakey shampoo. When it 'stops' working, I switch to T-Gel. And then in a month or two months, try the PK again because it's my favourite out of all the troublesome scalp shampoos.

This. Currently what's working for me is one of those scalp brushes to massage your scalp when shampooing. Also the Superdrug Trichology scalp tonic.
