They seem to have some lovely dresses in there, but I wonder how they look IRL? Is it a case of ending up sending them all back?

For those stating working practices etc MN favourites don't rate well

If I had to stop using a store because it’s unethical Practices I would need to sew my own clothes? Do you shop at Zara, H&M or Nike? they’re just as bad or worse.

Actually they’re not goodonyou.eco/how-ethical-is-shein/

this is a shop that sold swastika jewellery for gods sake

AhaLyn · 23/07/2022 19:15

Everything looks pretty but when you get it it’s got the cut of a tea towel so never again. A glittery turd.

Shady practices, unlivable wages, environmentally damaging…
duclarion.com/2022/04/shein-continues-to-profit-despite-unethical-practices/

Please don’t support fast fashion. So damaging.

MY fb feed has, on a local page, a lady selling 4 Shein bikini’s bought as a size 16-18 - but resold to fit size 10.
A fashion group I follow, had a huge thread about how awful Shein clothing was to wear in the heat.

Vinted has masses of Shein clothing if you must. Probably because once it arrives it is nothing like the item in the photo or doesn’t fit.

AHamSandwich · 23/07/2022 19:31

I've only bought craft stuff in past and all of that has been good, never bought clothes and don't think I would because the three people I know in real life whose clothing I've seen it's been terrible, not primark quality at all. We've got primark t shirts and jeans we've had for years but the shein stuff arrived in shit condition ti start with, and stunk of a weird chemical smell.

I've seen quite a few complaints that they steal small designers clothes from Etsy shops too on top of the other unethical stuff with photos of the designers product in their own store and the shein copying version. Like specific prints and patterns they've just stole.

I've spotted a few influencer who get free stuff in the individual item reviews with their photos and I often wonder how reliable those things are, just like the Amazon products where sellers give freebies out for reviews people don't often do one star ones saying they're shit because they want further freebies.

Or when they go "OMG IM OBSESSSSSSED" but then have it in a giveaway a few days later and are never seen wearing it again.

Zara and Nike, maybe, but I thought H&M were better?

All three are assessed as better the Shein. It's been labelled 'the worst of the worst' by ethical reviewers

Twattergy · 23/07/2022 20:43

Can't believe the comment upthread that says the 'quality is awful', that they send back 70% of what they buy and therefore...'I love Shein'! Jesus, if customers are this easy to please no wonder outfits selling the lowest quality, disposable, good only for land-fill clothing are raking it in. Its ridiculous that a company selling rags at volume is permitted to operate. Don't buy from Shein.

SpiceRat · 23/07/2022 20:51

If you’re privileged enough to that you can afford to shop in 100% ethical fashion shops, absolutely great, fantastic for you. For some of us these fast fashion shops are a literal lifeline for clothes, especially plus size women. It’s very difficult to find second hand clothing in charity shops that fit, unless I want a beige t shirt or beige combats.

Please do not shame those who can’t afford to spend £50+ on 1 item of clothing. We are aware of the issues and I would fucking love to be able to buy ethical clothing, but sometimes I just want a new dress or a new coat rather than buying second hand which is 90% of my wardrobe as is.

Sandra1984 · 23/07/2022 21:09

i had no idea all of Shein returns ended in landfill 😫why wouldn’t they give them to charity??

I've never bought anything from Zara, H & M or Nike.

It's not a 100% guarantee but I only buy clothes made in the UK and EU countries.

Then shop in primark, which still scores better than Shein.

"I have to exploit poor people because I'm poor" doesn't wash.

MumUndone · 23/07/2022 22:17

If you shop at Shein, you're funding child labour, shame on you

Victoria1083 · 24/07/2022 00:39

this lady really explains it well

Because there are investigations and reports into traders, and shine comes out as worst and horrific. But that never stops anyone

Yes, how could you know this and still use them?

eekyeeky · 24/07/2022 07:31

would never buy from there

eekyeeky · 24/07/2022 07:33

There are lots of options between 100% ethical (which is very hard to find) & Shein.

FrecklesMalone · 24/07/2022 07:36

My friend works for an anti slavery charity and says Shein has absolutely no practices to protect workers. Couldn't do it.

wheresmymojo · 24/07/2022 07:55

It's not true that all retailers are 'unethical' because they all source clothes made abroad.

I work for a large 'fast fashion' retailer - one of our core strategies is a Fashion with Integrity strategy.

It focuses on sustainability, ethical integrity and transparency.

Those companies that take this seriously make sure that people making clothes for them are paid a living wage, work in safety and have all the basic workers rights you would expect.

We also track and work on minimising our carbon emissions and on how we can use fabrics that are recycled, recyclable and/or decent quality.

Shein has been shown not to do any of these things

wheresmymojo · 24/07/2022 07:59

Also Shein has just raised something like £1bn in capital...

Are they going to use it to improve their practices?

Nope.

They're going to use it to get a bigger market share through advertising on socials and using data intelligence.

They're the absolute worst of the worst of the worst.

wheresmymojo · 24/07/2022 08:03

Here's the link

By buying Shein we (consumers) have basically given the green light to unethical investors to pile on the trend for using shitty companies with no intention to be vaguely decent humans

Good job everyone who buys there!

Yes I would never buy from them. I could take no pleasure in wearing clothes made like this.

couldbeahobbit · 24/07/2022 08:45

Soooooo my friends love Shein. And I was always too scared to order mainly because I didn’t want poorly fitting clothes.

I finally ordered and guess what? Horrendous sizing, weird shapes and the material is clingy and sweaty.

The dress I bought from Shein was also being sold on Amazon for the same cost.

I personally wouldn’t go down that road again.

No excuse @SpiceRat - many other options to buy new if you don’t want second hand.

I scour Vinted, searching under ‘new’ or ‘new with tags’ for brands much more ethical than Shein. Recently, I’ve had a dress for £5.00, a jacket for £6.50, shorts £2.00.

TheOGCCL · 24/07/2022 13:26

Shein makes me despair for the world. Very good at promotion and thousands of options so everyone is likely to see something they like, but that’s part of the problem, far too many lines and waste. Please do not order things which need to be shipped across the world.
