Teeth whitening trays, anyone used them?.

I've had the impressions done at the dentist, and have an appointment to get them and the gel. However, I'm having reservations now as people have told me that it increases tooth sensitivity? Has anyone had this experience? A colleague told me that she experienced tooth pain.

Yep...no problems at all with sensitivity.

It takes a bit of getting used to sleeping with them in.

Really good results too.

Maireas · 21/07/2022 15:53

Thanks, @Hyperion100 .
Glad to hear you had good results and no bad side effects! I can't stand the idea of tooth pain, so was put off!

I had this done, last year. No bad side effects.
Great results, changed my life 😊

Maxifly · 21/07/2022 20:40

Had tooth sensitivity increased but that was my own fault for leaving them in longer than recommended time (1 to 2 hours) to be honest, I'm disappointed with the end result but I guess every one is different. 300 quid to find that out.....

Thank you, Dance, that's good to know, and it sounds like a great outcome.

I think it depends on your age and how thin the enamel is etc. If you have been recommended them, should be no problem.

Emarjha · 21/07/2022 20:43

I had terrible sensitivity and had to stop after the first few days. The sensitivity diminished but didn’t go completely. 9 months later I have noticed a permanent increase in sensitivity. It also made white stripes on my teeth, the dentist said that often happens but they fade very quickly. But mine didn’t fade so I’m left with permanent white stripes on my teeth. They look worse than before the treatment, I wish I hadn’t bothered. The dentist refunded me but I’ve suffered permanent damage

FizzyLizt · 21/07/2022 20:43

They do different levels. My teeth can be sensitive and I have 6% hydrogen peroxide. Definitely brightens and whitens but doesn't make them sore. Dentist should take into account if you have sensitive teeth.

FizzyLizt · 21/07/2022 20:44

Also my dentist lets me buy syringes at £35 a go if I want to do them again, I don't have to buy new trays. Still got mine from about 8 years ago Smile

Maireas · 21/07/2022 20:45

That sounds awful, @Emarjha - did the dentist say what had gone wrong?

Yes, it was the dentist himself recommended the treatment following a routine check up.

He said I just had very sensitive teeth. No explanation for the white stripes not disappearing, he just shrugged and said “you signed a waiver so you can’t sue”.

Maireas · 21/07/2022 20:47

That's terrible on the part of the dentist!

Yes I used them for a few weeks, if left on for more than the prescribed time my teeth were super sensitive and very painful for a while afterwards. But not permanently.

Maireas · 21/07/2022 20:51

Thanks, Maggie. Were you pleased with the results?

OP posts:
MaggieMagpie357 · 21/07/2022 20:53

Yes definitely - this was for my lower teeth so they could colour match the new crowns I was having fitted on my upper teeth. I still have the trays but haven't felt the need to whiten since, and this was nearly 11 years ago!

silentpool · 21/07/2022 20:54

They are very good. I tend to do it every year.

With regards to sensitivity, don't get too strong a % of whitening gel (I think mine is 16%) you can take a day off here and there for a break and also use Sensodyne or similar toothpaste.

Martinisarebetterdirty · 21/07/2022 20:55

My results are not as white as I would have liked and if you struggle at all with sleep you may find it hard to sleep with the trays in. No sensitivity but I used Colgate pro enamel toothpaste throughout. I think if you want the super white opaque look you need bonding too.

alongtimeagoandfaraway · 21/07/2022 20:59

I did this a few years ago. Didn’t get tooth pain but did get headaches which has put me off doing it again. I reported to my dentist who just said he hadn’t heard of that before but for me it was definitely linked to use of whitening trays.

LaQuern · 21/07/2022 21:02

I had a nightmare with sensitivity. If it happens take a night off the gel and fill the trays with sensitive toothpaste

Maireas · 21/07/2022 21:07

Thanks, some good advice on here.

Love mine, I bought opalescence 35% online and stick rigidly to the time, no problems and great results!

No, some of those celebrity teeth look silly. Just looking cleaner and brighter is fine.

How much is the cost?
