Bad experience at the hairdressers, I don’t know what I can do, please help

I went to a hair salon in London and got my hair coloured and cut. I explained that my hair is very thick and prone to damage.
The hairdresser said his mum has the same type of hair with me and knew what he was doing.
4 hours in the salon, he has coloured and cut my hair and I could tell my hair felt damaged (he couldn’t get a comb in) he charged me £280 and said that he had given me a discount.
I paid and left but when I got home I realised that my hair what extremely damaged and matted together.
I went back and although he tried to say that it would settle and to wait, I asked for my money back which I got.
my question is what treatments can I have to repair my extremely damaged hair? Would a Brazilian blowout help or are there other treatments that mumsnetters have tried that they could recommend? Any suggestions would help, I’m so upset and am desperate to get it fixed

Did he use Olaplex?

Dic · 17/07/2022 21:59

Where's the damage?

PutinIsAWarCriminal · 17/07/2022 22:00

Would a keratin treatment help?

SkeletonFight · 17/07/2022 22:03

It must be bad if he gave you your money back. Did the salon not offer to try to fix it or did you not want to? TBH I would find another hairdresser to tackle this. Can you get any recommendations from friends?

Nutellacrazy · 18/07/2022 00:16

The damage is mostly at the roots so I can’t get it cut off.
he did do a treatment on it but it made no difference.
He knew he’d damaged it and didn’t argue when I asked for a full refund
But I just don’t know what to do and have lost trust with what other hairdressers might say they can do

It is hard to imagine damage at the roots... I would try rubbing in a generous amount of oil, olive oil for example, and massaging it into the scalps and roots, and then using a gentle shampoo to wash it out, and condition with something rich. It is possible the dye wasn't properly emulsified and removed? This will remove it, if so.

Nutellacrazy · 18/07/2022 07:34

I will try this, thank you

No he used Wellaplex but it made no difference

Is opalex not good? I’ve used once and quite liked it

chiffchaffchiff · 18/07/2022 09:14

Olaplex is good for repairing damage but not particularly moisturising. I'd use olaplex no3 and then follow it up with the Garnier hair food mask for damaged hair to help with combing. The hair mask isn't very expensive so you can use it daily. It can also be used as a leave in conditioner. I haven't used it as a leave-in because I have thin hair but my hairdresser does.

UpToonGirl · 18/07/2022 11:40

How awful! I would spend the £280 on treatments and other bits for your hair. I would do alternating protein (olaplex) treatments then next wash a more moisturising treatment. Moroccan oil daily on dry hair. Silk bonnet and pillow for sleeping. Make sure you have a decent hair brush and be as gentle as you can when brushing.

I would also where a hat/uv protecting when out on the sun.

Lunificent · 18/07/2022 11:42

How did he damage the hair? What did he do to it?

Minoloso · 18/07/2022 11:46

Can we see a pic OP? Hard to know what to suggest without one.

Philip Kingsley elasticizer is v good. Leave it in all day or night on dampened dry hair, then wash & moisturise. His products are very good. Look into shampoo & conditioners he does for damaged hair.

Nutellacrazy · 18/07/2022 20:48

Thank you, I will follow these tips…I’ve had a hat on since because I’m so embarrassed of how matted it looks!! :(

Can we see a pic, OP?

If it’s any consolation I’ve ruined my hair so many times! I learnt my lesson the last home bleaching session when some broke off and I then just used coconut oil and constant hair masks.

I’m sure you don’t wish to do this but as the damaged hair will have to grow out a really good trim and restyle may help your hair, plus you’ll have less weight on the damaged parts.

Again, moisture and tlc!

TheOriginalMrsMoss · 18/07/2022 20:59

I had a similar experience with a new hairdresser (highly recommended by a colleague) who destroyed my hair.

I used all sorts of products but found the Aphogee 2 step protein and moisture treatment and the Phillip Kingsley treatment the best. I would leave the Phillip Kingsley stuff on overnight at least once a week.

There are several YouTube clips of people with really broken fried hair using the Aphogee treatment and it transformed it over time.

I also really liked the Lee Stafford conditioner mask in the bright pink tub. It smells gorgeous.

Hugs OP - I know what it feels like. I had long hair and to be honest, I had to wait until it grew out to regain the original texture. I have smooth, quite silky hair and it was a frizzy mess. All the products above did improve it though. Good luck - it will slowly improve and thank God you got your money back!

Badger1970 · 18/07/2022 20:59

Having had a colour disaster, you need to do weekly deep conditioning treatments with something like Philip Kingsley elasticizer, but to mask the day to day, I found Frizz Ease serum was a godsend. The shampoo and conditioner were good too.

Aquamarine1029 · 18/07/2022 21:01

How did he damage the roots that badly? Was your scalp not burning?

LucyLoopyLu · 18/07/2022 21:10

I disagree about using oil. It won't help your hair and will just stop other treatments penetrating your hair.

Deep conditioning using moisturising hair mask regularly will help. Olaplex no. 3 will help and so will conditioner etc with protein in it. The Elasticiser might (tbh I used it before and didn't rate it much but it's got a good reputation).
Whatever you do, be very careful with brushing and heat styling, especially if the damage is at the roots as that will take a long time to grow out. Everything you do needs to be very gentle with your hair now to try minimise breakage. Treatments will help but ultimately its a waiting and growing game.
Sorry you have to put up with this.

mathanxiety · 18/07/2022 21:21

I agree an oil based product sn't going to help.

Try wetting the hair and slathering it with a huge amount of a moisturising conditioner, rinsing it out after a wait of about ten minutes. During the ten minutes, run your fingers very gently through the hair, trying to tease out the mattes.

Then wrap it in an old t-shirt to dry. Don't use a brush or comb to smooth it out. Keep it wrapped. Repeat next day until you've dealt with the mattes.

Treat your hair like a cashmere jumper.

RockinHorseShit · 18/07/2022 22:00

This is going to sound a bit bonkers, but I spent too many years with overly died & frequently changing & knackered hair. Friends were the same.

We used wool conditioner as a treatment, as in what you put in your wool wash. Left on fir a while, this helped the most.

& Nioxin System 6 shampoo& conditioner will sort it out onwards. It's expensive, but myself & a few friends have found it amazing stuff for sorting out knackered hair

Cstring · 18/07/2022 22:09

I think it would be helpful if you could tell us What exactly has the hairdresser done to it that’s damaged it so much?

WhatIsThisPlease · 18/07/2022 22:17

Definitely sleep with a silk cap on it, it's made the most amount of difference to my hair when I compare it to billions of treatments!

Try not to wash it too often and don't dry it when you do. Gently comb conditioner through with a wide tooth comb and leave for as long as you can. Preferably overnight.

General rule is, if you can eat it, it's gentle. So olive oil, coconut oil etc are great.

Do as little with it as you can for the next couple of weeks except condition and silk cap.

Good luck!

Nutellacrazy · 18/07/2022 23:04

It was bleached

Aphogee protein treatment is fantastic for damaged hair. It really saved mine when everything else failed, after a home dye job went badly wrong. Look it up op, good luck x
