Heels or Trainers

I'm going out this weekend for the first time since before lockdown, I have a beautiful dress that I bought pre-Covid which I never got a chance to wear but it really only looks right with heels. From what I can tell everyone tends to wear trainers out these days. I know I could just wear what I like and sod what anyone else thinks but will I look completely out of touch if I wear heels?

My other option is a dress that would look with trainers but the only trainers I have are the sort that are white with flowers printed on the side, again in the interest of being fashionable, are these a complete "mum" trainer?

There’s nothing to stop you wearing heels. Would you be comfortable in them?

EdithGrantham · 13/07/2022 21:39

I know there's not but as it's my first time out in a long time I don't want to look out of place, the heels I have were comfortable last time I wore them but again that was a long time ago!

I wore heels on a night out this week. Fair bit of walking around and on the way home I was limping because my feet were so sore - just not used to them. I looked at all the women on the train in their pretty dresses and white trainers and felt very jealous.

dudsville · 13/07/2022 21:41

If you haven't worn heels maybe wear then around the house a bit before committing to then fire a night out? But otherwise, make yourself happy!

tillyandmilly · 13/07/2022 21:47

Trainers with dresses look great - heels look a bit dated with dresses in my opinion 😊

IsAnyoneActuallyListening · 13/07/2022 21:49

I used to always wear heels, but now wear trainers with dresses, skirts, anything. I prefer comfort - and this weekend is going to be really hot weather.

EdithGrantham · 13/07/2022 21:49

Good idea to wear them around the house, will pop them on tomorrow when I finish work and see how I get on. I do love the idea of being super comfortable in trainers but I also really want to wear my beautiful dress.

I tried this dress on with trainers this evening, it definitely doesn't look good on me without heels.

if the dress code is formal, would you still wear trainers with dress? What else in this heat?

I'm not sure I get what you mean? I'm not going to an event, just out with friends for drinks so there's no dress code

Can we see the dress. Maybe some new trainers is the way forward.

Comfort is very important when out for drinks

ShandaLear · 13/07/2022 23:17

or how about a sandal or a wedge heel?

EdithGrantham · 14/07/2022 07:36

@Gottoomuchgoingon I'll take a photo of it on me later but this is one I've found online, I think the problem with me not wearing heels is that my bum is rather flat at the moment so I need the heels to make it appear a bit more perky

@ShandaLear possibly wedges would work but again does anyone wear them or will I just look entirely unfashionable (in which case I may as well just wear the heels I already own!)

People still wear heels at formal events. I was at DD's graduation yesterday, and not one dress wearer was wearing trainers.

You could tell that the heel wearers were unused to wearing heels though, by the way they were clumping around on them Smile

I wore wedge sandals.

milkysmum · 14/07/2022 08:10

That dress is gorgeous op- have you got a link for where you bought it?

EdithGrantham · 14/07/2022 08:16

@RampantIvy if it was a formal event I'd wear heels no question but as it's just drinks I thought the vibe was more casual now

@milkysmum it was Dorothy Perkins but as I say it was around 3 years ago now that I bought it so that image is from eBay, I typed in Dorothy Perkins floral midi dress to find it

I think sandals would look more elegant than trainers. TBH I find trainers too hot and sweaty in hot weather.

Jadoube · 14/07/2022 08:43

That is a beautiful dress! A chunky black sandal with a bit of a heel might be an alternative option - something like these - and handy generally for summer?

TheOGCCL · 14/07/2022 08:54

I think a dress with trainers is a bit of a cliché so would be refreshing to see someone in heels with a dress, as long as they are comfortable and you can walk elegantly. Trainers with flowers also sound too much with a floral dress.

RampantIvy · 14/07/2022 09:00

I don't like the current fashion of chunky sandals. I wore wedges yesterday, and DD's friend's grandmother said "oh, I have those sandals as well" Blush
Just shows how fashionable I am Grin

I've asked this before but didn't get a reply - what kind of trainers do people wear with dresses when out for drinks? Nike/Adidas etc or just plain white pump style trainers?

Round here it is the ubiquitous Air Force Ones/Stan Smiths. Veja, Air and Grace and New Balance are also popular. Alexander McQueen for designer.

My gran wears Kurt Geiger spangley ones.

RampantIvy · 14/07/2022 11:10

I don't even notice what brand trainers people wear. I am so ridiculously brand unaware.

GettingStuffed · 14/07/2022 11:12

I think espadrilles are your answer. You can get flattish ones but they don't look like trainers

jeaux90 · 14/07/2022 12:01

I'd go with wedge sandals.
