Joules

I've read today that joules are getting advisors in to help boost profits. So where in your opinion is joules going wrong? I still buy pieces there but they often end up in my wardrobe unworn.

I always like the idea of Jules but their style is just a bit too "dog and horse" for me. People I know who shop there do so because they can wear the same outfit for school run, dog walk etc.

bambi1132 · 11/07/2022 15:34

I love joules but they're well out of my price range

KirstenBlest · 11/07/2022 15:35

Why do you buy clothes from them, and why are you not wearing them?

The clothes look nice and are decent quality, but just not the sort of things I wear.

cremedelacardi · 11/07/2022 15:40

I like some of it initially enough to buy it but by the time I get it home/unwrap it I don't know it's just pretty dull and unflattering and dare i say it but on me - Mumsy.

Yes agree about it being too 'dog & horse.' I love their harmost tops but it's becoming more & more difficult to find designs that aren't too countryside/frumpy

TokyoSushi · 11/07/2022 15:42

mummabubs · 11/07/2022 15:45

I don't buy from them anymore... Some nice designs but very expensive for what it is and I have to say I think the quality has gone downhill. Two pairs of Joules wellies only lasted one season each before holes appeared at the seams. I also bought a work dress which I washed according to the instructions but went very faded and bobbly after just a couple of washes.

ItchyBit · 11/07/2022 15:48

Too many gold buttons. Also their eco rating was really poor last time I checked. Other retailers in similar price range seem better.

MinglingFlamingo · 11/07/2022 15:48

Joules doesn't really do any clothes which fit my shape. I don't suit very high necklines.I have a few tops from them but not many

I have a very comfy pair of jeans from them though

eyeoresancerre · 11/07/2022 15:53

I used to buy quite a lot from Joules but their quality is awful now. Polyester dresses, seams that fall down after a couple of washes, buttons not sewn on well. I bought two dresses last year and my dresses from Primark washed better and lasted longer. It's really put me off buying anything from there again sadly.

KimWexlersPonyTail · 11/07/2022 15:58

Colours fade quickly even in delicates wash.
Patterns getting tiresome and repetative, they need a new look. I think that flowers on stripes look is past it, wouldnt wear it and I am late sixties!

Blossomandbee · 11/07/2022 16:01

I think their flowers and stripes look is a bit overdone and dated now. It was the school run uniform at my DC's school 4-5 years ago, not so much now.
I ordered some boots from them and they were ridiculously narrow, all the reviews said the same. Their tops come up too short on the body and sleeves for me and the cut always feels odd and seems to make them ride up.
I think like some other previously premium brands such as Laura Ashley and Cath Kidston, the nearly constant sales gives the impression they're on a downward spiral and loses their appeal a bit.

MrsOwainGlyndŵr · 11/07/2022 16:09

I think Joules's problem is that it's not SeaSalt.
Sea Salt have "out Joulesed" them.
Or White Stuff.

fyn · 11/07/2022 16:33

I live in the countryside and work in agriculture, absolutely none of my friends in their late 20s/early 30s would be seen dead in Joules. Presumably people that have previously been their target market. They are much more likely to wear Schoffel, Le Chameau, Fairfax and Favor, Holland & Cooper etc… Joules is a bit townie.

DramaAlpaca · 11/07/2022 16:34

It's both fussy and frumpy. I hate their patterns.

BammBamm · 11/07/2022 16:36

It's not very good quality and is overpriced for what it is. They same to recycle the same prints/patterns.

Aha, maybe this is their problem? Country folk think it's toi townie and urban dwellers think it's too country?

Astrabees · 11/07/2022 16:52

I used to buy lots of stuff from Joules, before it was taken over from the original owners. The shops were like little caves of lovely things, interesting socks, mugs, belts and the dresses were lovely - i usually sold mine on ebay once I'd finished with them as they were really good quality. Now it is all dull and frumpy, they still have load of bretton stripes and flower paterns that have not changed in years. The lay out of our local shop is now open and is not an inviting place to visit. It has gone the way that Laura Ashley did, lovely original ideas totally trashed by becoming part of a large mainstream business.

CointreauVersial · 11/07/2022 16:56

Agree 100% with the dated flowers and stripes - also far too many shouty primary colours - bright pink, yellow, navy. You can spot a Joules item at 20 paces. I have bought the odd thing for my niece in there but wouldn't shop there for myself.

MissDollyMix · 11/07/2022 17:00

I used to love Joules but it hasn’t moved with the times at all. It’s all frumpy and dated now and I’m probably their target audience (middle aged, affluent, ‘dog and horse’ type)
Their clothes aren’t durable enough for genuine country activities either.

fudfootedfannybangle · 11/07/2022 17:04

“Dog and horse” type former Joules aficionado here. I think they’re “playing” at country now. Eg I don’t want a fucking acrylic “dog-walking” jumper.

they’d not know a natural fibre if it smacked them in the chops.

good coats though.

Numbat2022 · 11/07/2022 17:04

Everything I've tried on in the last couple of years has been incredibly unflattering. I am admittedly a difficult shape to dress - size 18/20, big boobs - but I have looked SO bad in things that on the hanger looked like they would work.

Also their patterns are a bit old hat now, they need some new ideas.

swimmingincustard · 11/07/2022 17:06

It's the rabbit, or hare (not sure which it is). I ordered a lovely high neck white jersey top but it had a pink embroidered logo.. I'm don't particularly like branded clothes so I'd rather go to fatface etc for less obvious logos.

QuentininQuarantino · 11/07/2022 17:07

The price! I only buy it in the sales but I do like the quality of the coats and kidswear. I don’t suppose lowering prices will
help them improve their profits though..

also, their look (and I like the look) is on it’s way out of fashion. They were great when skinny jeans were big.

FortonServices · 11/07/2022 17:16

Joules is that 40s yummy mummy uniform. Can't quite put my finger on it but it's kind of everyone trying to dress like they live in the country with Labradors and horses, except they don't.
