Joules

I've read today that joules are getting advisors in to help boost profits. So where in your opinion is joules going wrong? I still buy pieces there but they often end up in my wardrobe unworn.

Absolutely appalling customer service and very unreliable for buying online.

Just check out the online reviews on Trustpilot.

Terrible quality. I bought a dress online and it was horrible. Thin, nasty fabric. Primark quality with Boden prices. (Boden also crap for quality now)

Sparklybutold · 11/07/2022 17:32

Easy - too expensive, poor range of sizes and not enough diversity in clothing, I.e huge association with horsey type women which limits potential customers

HappyHappyHermit · 11/07/2022 17:35

I find them just too expensive for what they are. They have a big sale on at the moment and it brought it down to sensible prices (half price or more). I did have to be quite picky when looking though, I don't mind stripes and floral but don't want anything that looks too 'Joules' if you see what I mean. There were also a lot of polyester bits that just looked like something from a far cheaper shop, fine if you like that but not worth the Joules price tag.

hattie43 · 11/07/2022 17:42

Some of their florals are so dated and old fashioned . I bought their equestrian polo shirts when they first started but occasionally pjs and socks now but that's it .

Sooverthemill · 11/07/2022 19:46

I bought 2 things last week for the first time ever. A decent navy vest top which fits perfectly and hides bar straps but £12 in the sale. And a denim midi skirt which surprised me greatly but it's lovely and a great fit. I looked at other stuff (first shop in a town since covid, I don't go out much) but most other things were weirdly floral and logo'd. I also looked in white stuff. We live in a seaside town so basically only have joules fat face seasalt and white stuff

CocktailNapkin · 11/07/2022 19:53

Only worth buying in the sales. And I mean a good sale, not a piddly 10% off some random weekday. I like their Simone girlfriend jeans, and I bought a generic bikini bottom earlier in the year. But having a look through the sale just now... yeah nahhh. Some of the stuff is just so... dutchy, to use my mother's phrase. Dowdy and dated. Some looks are "little girl" too - there is a Friend of Joules (Kite something or other?) and it just looks like they sized up their kids designs for women. No thanks. And what is up with that bee and floral stuff over stripes?

I have bought some cute slippers from there for myself and mom, but polyester sack dresses for 65 quid I can do better at Next or Primark or White Stuff or Sea Salt or anywhere else really.

legalseagull · 11/07/2022 19:55

I seem to be in the minority in that I love joules! I have lots from there and I love their kids stuff for my toddlers.

flowerycurtain · 11/07/2022 19:57

Another country type here. I should be their target market - 41, mum in the country with labradors and horses. They're too townie for me. I used to love them in the days when they did lots of country shows

Pinkwellies81 · 11/07/2022 19:59

Agree they are too “dog & horse”, but not actually proper outdoor wear so probably don’t appeal to genuinely outdoorsy folk who favour Patagonia, Rab type brands

I’m 40 and a mum but consider it mumsy and frumpy (sorry)

I do buy the kids stuff for my preschooler, but only second hand on Vinted

Pinkwellies81 · 11/07/2022 20:02

In my mind it’s worn by town folk who think they are country folk because they walk their dog in the local woods for 20 minutes a day

myyellowcar · 11/07/2022 20:03

I find them quite dated these days, it’s definitely ‘a look’ of its own with the stripes and florals but it’s not really what’s in fashion anymore. It’s a bit old fashioned mum uniform, and I say that as a 30 something mum who has definitely lost my style confidence.

justasking111 · 11/07/2022 20:04

I have a few really ancient bits. They wash well still. I'm a seasalt fan now because of the quality

CinnamonStar · 11/07/2022 20:04

Quality has gone downhill. (Not just Joules, it’s the same everywhere.

Used to be really thick, sturdy cotton, utterly indestructible stuff - I would buy hoodies and those sweatshirts with half zip or buttons. They had nice little finishing touches, like velvety lined collars, velvet binding round cuffs etc.

They’re now a bit flimsy, no nice finishing, and not even fleecy inside, so I don’t bother.
I can get the same (mediocre) quality fabrics in H&M for much less money.
I’ll happily pay more for something that will last me, but everything looks like it won’t last out the season.

Kids clothes are cut very ungenerously - much too short for my dc. Dd had an age 9-10 jumper and the sleeves were already too short when she was still 8!

Flackattack · 11/07/2022 20:05

It’s such a shame as it was worth the money (well with a discount).
dresses were fitted with pockets and quality zips are now thin tunics.
all looks the same and they don’t change it.
poor quality - tried a coat on and pulled the waist shapers and they just snapped.
couldn’t believe the price when I last looked at their website. Had a £20 off £50 - dresses were £80/£90!!! Ridiculous!!!

fatlazycow · 11/07/2022 20:05

I like their kids stuff- I have a DS and Joules is one of the places that actually does a really nice boys selection with lovely colours, patterns etc. I’m 29 and wouldn’t wear any of the women’s range though, seems aimed at older ladies.

I generally only buy my boy things in the sale as well, or 2nd hand off Vinted as it is on the pricier side.

Yodaisawally · 11/07/2022 20:09

I loved joules when they were an actual equestrian brand 20 years ago, their stuff was great quality, they branched out a bit and I have a beautiful leather bag that must be 17 or 18 years old. Saturation killed it for me, when my mum and mil started wearing the ubiquitous Breton and they reduced quality for the same price or more expensive i was done with the brand.

Vicliz24 · 11/07/2022 20:11

They don't even sell well in charity shops now . Like Jack Wills they're past their peak .

CharlotteSt · 11/07/2022 20:13

When I did live in the country (with a Labrador but no central heading), I had a great Joules fleece that I wore to death.. I also bought a pair of lovely wellies and promptly went arse over tit as they had no grip! Countrywear my arse.

Currently I have a nice top that I bought in one of their outlet shops and a dress that I really like that I bought this year with a substantial discount.

Other than that they're not generally on my radar. I'm more of a Monsoon kind of girl.

Judashascomeintosomemoney · 11/07/2022 20:14

There’s nothing they could do to make me buy from them again. I bought two items from Joules, supplied by Friends of Joules - one was faulty the other never arrived. The ‘friend’ of Joules even msgd me to say the fault was mine as I’d used the item wrong. I hadn’t, it was an earring and it fell apart on first use by my daughter - ‘friend’ of Joules said I shouldn’t have let a ‘child’ use it. My daughter was 19 at the time Hmm. Joules claimed neither issue was their problem. I had to get both lots of money back from PayPal. Appalling company.

I was going to say exactly this! They became known for a certain style which was reasonably fashionable a few years ago amongst certain demographics. But fashion has gone in a completely different direction now.

YorkshireTeaCup · 11/07/2022 20:20

This is funny because this summer I've bought 3 dresses from Joules for the first time in years. They were wrap style dresses with belts around the middle, loose fitting and have been amazing for me after having a baby last year. Perhaps that means they are not flattering on others? I did buy them all with 20% off though. For reference I'm the wrong side of 35 but have never been particularly stylish.

turquoisebuttons · 11/07/2022 20:20

I do still buy clothes for my daughters from there though and they’re lovely.

TheFairyCaravan · 11/07/2022 20:26

I love their girlfriend jeans and their dungarees. I’ve got some nice dresses in the sale, too. I don’t tend to buy anything full price and steer away from the stripey/floral look.
