What the hell has happened to my chin?!

Ok, for all that I try not bother about things like this too much - this is upsetting me so be kind please. I’ve never been particularly pretty imo but recently I seem to have started growing chin bristles! I’m 39, nearly 40 if that helps. I’m honestly embarrassed by them - it does not feel good to have them.

At the moment I attack them with tweezers but I need a better solution. And is this normal?! Is it an age thing? I was not warned about this!

I’m not pretty and I’ve sort of given up
on being so at this point in life, but a hairy chin is a bit more than I can stand… help please 😫

@chilledbubble thanks! That’s a new one for me, I am going to try it.

Solosunrise · 10/07/2022 13:35

It's very normal. I just tweeze mine. Problem being that sometimes I dont spot mine till they're an inch long Blush
Pp above said tweezers in car - I agree as the light is usually better.
If it's really bad, it could be due to pcos.
I check my chinny chin chin when I clean my teeth so it's a habit!

chilledbubble · 10/07/2022 13:36

It's all about having the metal bits twisted in the directions of the arrows on the handles.. hopefully that will make sense when you get it , or I think I found a video on their site.

Spudlet · 10/07/2022 13:42

Thanks everyone. I think I’m going to try the scary looking springy thing first and see if that gets the little shits.

I expected to start getting some weird hormonal shit happening in my forties but I did NOT expect this 😤

I threw my springy thing in the bin. I've a pretty high pain threshold, but can't bear the anticipation of that ouch moment multiple times😬 And it made my eyes water. I have one of those JML Flawless gadgets. It ain't perfect, but it's pain free!

Tallisker · 10/07/2022 13:50

I absolutely love my Tweezerman springy thing. Saves all the faff of making an appointment for a wax or having your chin threaded in public in a department store. I have three or four bristles that grown in the same place every time and it will deal with them, but sometimes I have to tweeze the odd one. I use the springy thing once or twice a week and I just don't have to worry about having a beard. Best thing ever for chin hair. Hurts on your top lip but I reckon you would get used to it (I haven't yet Grin)

Redcherries · 10/07/2022 14:07

I shave mine. Have been for several years now, never had any weird of bizarre side effects everyone warns you about. It’s quick, painless and I use one of the small facial shavers that fits in my make up bag. Bloody hormones.

Welcome to the hairy club! Perimenopause symptoms can kick in from 10 years before menopause, so it's probably that - my first chin hairs were late 30s too. No-one - well until very recently - really talks about peri though so a lot of us are going through stuff that we assumed would be once we are actually menopausal without knowing why.

BlueStarfish · 10/07/2022 14:14

For those of you who've tried electrolysis. Roughly how long does it take (per session and in total) and how much money for the face?

ChinBristles · 10/07/2022 14:16

Someone called for me?!

Vaniqua cream worked for me. £60 from Dr Fox website.

liveforsummer · 10/07/2022 14:18

I could t find my tweezers a few months back so I just whacked them off with a razor and never looked back. They grow back a wee bit spikey but as they are thick hairs anyway it's not much difference. Now I just sweep it over the patches every few days and it's never an issue

MissAtomicBomb1 · 10/07/2022 14:46

A Philips Lumea is what you need.

LadyLapsang · 10/07/2022 15:23

Simplehuman illuminated magnifying mirrors are great for this and for applying make up.

Phrenologistsfinger · 10/07/2022 15:26

Same age, had them since teens. Count yourself lucky they only just arrived. Tweezers or lazer, never shave.

tiredanddangerous · 10/07/2022 15:27

I shave my chin every morning in the shower. I could grow an impressive goatee if I so desired. Thank you pcos and perimenopause.

Phrenologistsfinger · 10/07/2022 15:30

I don’t have pcos btw, or even high testosterone. Mine is the low end of normal as am being tested for all things doing IVF. Hormones are normal! I’m a very unhairy person everywhere else, leg hairs barely visible etc.

I think they just exist as part of being an adult human female, needs to be normalised :)

Squirrelsnut · 10/07/2022 15:30

I'd just shave. There's no shame in it, loads of women do. Plus it makes your skin all soft and dewy!

freesoul12 · 10/07/2022 17:18

are you taking any hair vitamins ? i have noticed mine but when i discontinued them for a month and chin returned pretty much back to normal

AndStand · 10/07/2022 17:44

Springy thing, epilator and tweezers are my friends.
Hair removal cream didn't work in the slightest on my industrial strength whiskers.

My husband had to have radiotherapy on his neck for thyroid cancer and the side effect of the radiation was that it destroyed his beard hairs. So he only has to shave on one side now.
Seems a drastic solution though!!

AnnieSnap · 10/07/2022 17:56

It happens to virtually all women, usually triggered by peri-menopause (which often starts in the late 30s and goes on for decades)! I remember being freaked out by it at your age. I’m in my 60s now and it doesn’t bother me. I pluck the strong ones and use a women’s battery shaver on the softer ones.

emmetgirl · 10/07/2022 18:00

Totally normal unfortunately!

JesusMaryAndJosephAndTheWeeDon · 10/07/2022 19:35

I use my epilator if there are a few or my top lip needs doing too, if it is just a few or a very awkward one I use tweezers. I keep a pair of tweezers in my handbag as well as the bathroom and my makeup bag because those bristly little fuckers spring up any time any place with no warning!

stoptheride · 10/07/2022 19:37

The spring thing.. I spend every teams meeting on no video plucking facial hair 😆

ThePumpkinPatch · 10/07/2022 21:53

Epilator! Just a facial one will do. As it plucks the hair out rather than just shaving, it will take longer to grow back
