Tips for breaking in Birkenstocks?!

I bought a pair of Arizona's, I was really looking forward to wearing them but within 20 minutes by feet were torn to shreds.
I'm so disappointed, I'm going to wear them with socks around the house but is there anything else I can do?

Have you tried adjusting the buckle? I wear the gizeh type which seem the most comfy to me. But other that those foamy plasters on your feet for the points of pain. It shouldn't take too many wears to stretch them a little.

DoingJustFine · 10/07/2022 11:29

I never managed to. My one short-lived pair ripped my feet to ribbons.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 10/07/2022 11:29

They are pottering around the house sandals for me and nothing more.

Powerpotpie · 10/07/2022 11:30

I think your feet just eventually get use to the pain of hard ridges and sharp bits of buckles - you just need to persevere 😁

GoldenEclipse · 10/07/2022 11:31

I have the stupidest delicate feet ever and have never been rubbed by my Birkenstocks. Are they definitely genuine ones?

chipsandpeas · 10/07/2022 11:35

i wore my gizahs around the house and only for short walks ie round the shops for a few weeks before id say i had broke them in

dudsville · 10/07/2022 13:40

Honestly, I think they just suit particular feet, not all feet. I've never bought a pair that I haven't immediately been able to walk miles in, I've never had to break them in.

As you now own these it's too late, but if you're ever passing a retailer then try the Soft Foot Bed versions. I love ordinary birks, but these are heaven for your foot.

midsomermurderess · 10/07/2022 13:58

I have the Madrid Big Buckle. They ruin my feet. I bought wide so have to set the buckle to its narrowest. What that does to my toes is nasty.

catchingzzzeds · 10/07/2022 18:05

Thanks everyone, I'll try them around the house for a bit once my feet have healed.
I spent a long time deciding on a pair of summer shoes- I'm gutted 😩

I had a new pair of Arizonas last year and I followed the fitting instructions on the Birkenstock website, which meant adjusting the straps in a certain way. I had not a single blister.

JesusMaryAndJosephAndTheWeeDon · 10/07/2022 19:28

Where is it that is rubbing and what are they made of? Leather ones soften up more than birkoflor, patent is worst.

Not sure about the EVA but I suspect that the footbed won't give as much as cork.

GoodVibesHere · 10/07/2022 19:53

See when I buy Birkies they just instantly fit like a glove

Littleguggi · 10/07/2022 19:57

I love mine but then again I brought the soft bed ones. Found some dupes in fatface which are super comfy too!

Lallybroch · 10/07/2022 20:00

I've been given a pair today for my birthday and absolutely no problem with them, they are as comfy as slippers. These are my third pair. The first pair were a size 6, I downsized to a 5.5 as I thought the first ones were a touch too big and found them less comfortable, these new ones are a 6, so maybe it's to do with the sizing.

SierraSapphire · 10/07/2022 20:12

I sized down but I think the instep is in the wrong place and planning on sending them to a charity shop. Not worth the pain!

stillvicarinatutu · 10/07/2022 20:18

They do size large - so I got a size down .
I love mine . They hurt my instep to
Begin with but now I virtually live in mine but they are a different model to yours op. I got the mayari because they just look less ugly than the others and I love them .

supperlover · 10/07/2022 20:21

The straps should be quite loose. Do read the fitting instructions. I've worn them for years and never had a problem so wonder if you have the straps a bit tight.

aftonwater · 10/07/2022 20:21

The first time I wore mine I found them very uncomfortable but they very quickly moulded to my feet. I have just worn them solidly for 2 weeks on holiday with no issues.

Kenwouldmixitup · 10/07/2022 20:26

Been wearing them for decades and not a single problem until my most recent, fourth pair, and they fart.

Italiandreams · 10/07/2022 20:30

They are the only shoes I can wear straight from the box with no issues at all. Must depend on your feet, mine are comfy straight away and have had a few pairs.

Me too, sensitive small feet and no rubbing here. I got the soft footbed ones, they were more money but now they’re broken in they’re like walking on clouds. Wonderful until my lab puppy chewed them up 🙈

They felt quite lumpy to walk in for a while when I first got them, but never rubbed and he lumps resolved themselves into the bits that your toes grip into, support your arch etc.

Have you got them on tight enough OP? Try doing them up a bit.

Same here. My Birkies have always been so comfortable despite my stupid feet.

Dic · 10/07/2022 20:56

Mine never did. I've tried everything as I love the look of them but fucking hate them.

Fitflops are better for my feet.

TreePoser · 10/07/2022 21:37

ha ha, been trying to do this for about 3 weeks now. There's a supermarket about 5 minutes walk away so a few times, I've put them on to go to the supermarket and get milk or wine Grin but by the time I get home, my feet are in bits. I wouldn't dare wear them to work. My God, I'd need a pack of plasters and 4 solpadeine for that.

TreePoser · 10/07/2022 21:39

these are the ones I got

They should be ok for next summer.
