Tips for breaking in Birkenstocks?!

I bought a pair of Arizona's, I was really looking forward to wearing them but within 20 minutes by feet were torn to shreds.
I'm so disappointed, I'm going to wear them with socks around the house but is there anything else I can do?

I hope.

I also wish I'd got fitflops. I was deciding between two pairs of sandals and went for the B's. They're definitely genuine, from the Birkenstock site.

catchingzzzeds · 10/07/2022 21:44

Definitely genuine. I'll try loosening the straps and see if that helps.

I can walk literally all day in mine, persevere, very badly broken foot 🦶 a fair few years ago and they even accommodate that once worn in.

I think you need to sweat into them a bit. I find the footbed rubs on a new pair, and they do take quite a bit of wearing in before the footbed goes smooth and they stop rubbing.

I wear them to drive, to the supermarket and for short walks to wear them in.

Been wearing them for decades and not a single problem until my most recent, fourth pair, and they fart.

Yeah I've had this on a pair of madrids....what's going on?!?

I’ve been wearing Arizona style from Birkenstock for around 30 years ( different ones obviously) and I’ve never had to break them in. So I’m surprised. Are you getting the right size? Too big or small will make a difference. I currently have a pair 13 years old plus newer ones and none ever hurt out if the box. maybe wear with socks around the house?
now how to wear in flip flops that’s a topic I would be up for, agony

I have adjusted the buckle so it’s a bit less tight as someone suggested earlier, and it does help, but you have to slightly claw your toes to keep them on. Daft to buy shoes online, but it was during lockdown.

Toddlerteaplease · 14/07/2022 00:26

I've never had to break them in. They are the only sandals that don't give me blisters.

GettingStuffed · 14/07/2022 11:33

I start with 10 minutes and gradually increase the time don't rush into it. They'll suddenly become ultra comfortable. For those saying they shred the feet try again but don't wear for more than 10 minutes the first few times

Pinkkahori · 14/07/2022 11:41

I've had multiple pairs and never had issues or any need to break them in.
I've never sized down even though I've seen recommendations on Mumsnet to do that.
I bought my first pair nearly 20 years ago and wore them on a two week holiday, loads of walking. They were amazingly comfortable straight away and I've bought new ones every few years since.
I think I have Birkenstock shaped feet!

I hate having to claw the toes. That makes the underside of my foot so sore.

daisyjgrey · 14/07/2022 12:04

I buy Birks specifically because they're one of the only types of shoes I can wear that don't need any wearing in at all.

rainbowandglitter · 14/07/2022 12:09

I bought my first pair about a month ago and were comfortable straightaway.

Lightningrain · 14/07/2022 12:16

I find it depends on the style.

I’ve got some Mayari that gave me blisters on my arches for a long time (they’re ok now). The Gizeh didn’t give me blisters but I don’t like walking long distances in them as they feel looser like I need to grip them with my toes.

The pair I bought this summer are Arizona and they seem comfortable straight away, although I haven’t done more than 20 mins walking in them at a time so far.

It’s interesting that some people are advising to size down. I’ve got my normal size and my toes seem to be pretty much at the end of them.

sageandbasil · 14/07/2022 12:20

I've just broken in my arazonas. Like you I was devastated they were so uncomfortable. Had a couple of long walks where they rubbed but they're great now

Paprikapommes · 14/07/2022 12:45

Loosen the straps, and about 5 blister plasters per foot.

Shinyandnew1 · 14/07/2022 18:20

I’m really surprised by this-I have had countless pairs of Birkenstocks and never had to wear any of them in-I’ve not needed a single plaster! I walk for miles as well!
