I have heavy legs and big calves and ankles, I haven't worn shorts since I was a child.

I'm sick of being hot I want to buy a pair of shorts, please give me your fashion wisdom

Im a size 12-14

I want to buried in cycling shorts

huffyhufferson · 28/06/2022 11:26

My problem with shorts is that when I walk, my thighs rub together and the material on both legs creeps up! Can this be stopped or will I just keep wearing dresses/skirts?

SweetPetrichor · 28/06/2022 11:30

I got these at the weekend. First pair of shorts I’ve owned since childhood and they’re so comfy and don’t make my thighs look like sausages!

I have the same issue huffyhufferson. It's not that the skin gets irritated, it's the bunching up of material that bothers me.

Is this a situation that chub rub would fix?

And, if so, what is chub rub?

huffyhufferson · 28/06/2022 12:13

Yes that's it exactly TheStarofCountyDown - it's the bunching up of the material! I don't know what chub rub is? I think the poster who mentioned it was saying it's what happens when your thighs rub together? Their solution was to rub some deodorant stick on your thighs to stop chub rub. If I've got this wrong - I apologise.

TheStarofCountyDown · 28/06/2022 12:14

And has anyone tried these anti-chafe pants under shorts (assuming length works) or are they only for dresses?

MissMarpleRocks · 28/06/2022 12:20

I have the same issue but also the most vile knees. I stick to dresses - love the current fashion of long & floaty as my legs are hidden

HelenHywater · 28/06/2022 12:24

If you get a pair of shorts that end at the narrowest part of your thighs, they're much more flattering. For me, that means they're quite short. There are lots in H&M at the moment - have a look there.

I don't agree with a pp suggestion of avoiding shorts! Very few people other than gazelle like 14 year olds have perfect legs, and I think you just have to embrace shorts.

Rina66 · 28/06/2022 12:27

I wear magic shorts, like the magic trousers but a mid thigh slightly flared version, they are so flattering and comfortable. I agree, that mid thigh point is where they need to finish and definitely not too tight or too flared.

Yodaisawally · 28/06/2022 12:31

I don't think anyone looks good in knee length shorts, I'm rather chunky if leg and have recently realised I look much better in mid thigh length shorts, not tight. Currently living in next boy shorts, they're slightly wider cut so don't look like a sausage.

Chewbecca · 28/06/2022 13:42

I wear Fat Face's Bermuda shorts with my chunky legs. They're very comfy & the material stays in position so no chub rub.

Puffalicious · 28/06/2022 13:52

Some of us just don't look good in shorts. I hate my knees as well as my legs. Like PP long, flowing skirts/ dresses in cotton are fabulous. Now and again I find a just on the knee dress that works too. I find them much cooler than shorts too.

Chub rub shorts from SNAG are fabulous. As a 12-14 I'm not their usual clientele, but these are great, they really keep you cool.

I suspect you are right but this thread has revived a streak of foolish summer optimism and I now have two pairs coming !
Dare say I will be disappointed but you never know - I have terrible tree trunks for legs and am not sure there is a thinner part unless
My ankle counts !

I'm laughing as I can't really see a thinnest part on mine either, and at the fact that we all get caught in the seasonal excitement! If I buy any more fecking sequins near Xmas I'll shoot myself- every, bloody year!

Puffalicious · 28/06/2022 20:24

I bought this today. It's fab- very cool

I saw these- they have shorts attached underneath- for those who don't like chub rub when wearing a skirt. Comes in a myriad of colours. I'm tempted but touch short for me.

@Rina66 I also like the magic shorts😎

SquatBetty · 29/06/2022 06:31

I've got very fat thighs and fat knees so I only wear Bermuda shorts. I'm currently wearing some denim ones from Sainsbury's a few years ago.

Divebar2021 · 29/06/2022 12:29

Cos have got loads of different pairs which I like - I’ve just bought these ones but haven’t worn them yet so can comment on bunching. Arket do quite nice versions too.

As an aside to the PP that mentioned Snag they’re not a plus size retailer they are an inclusive retailer who include plus sizes. I keep seeing comments about “I am not their target audience”. Etc. if you are a humanoid you are their target audience. They do good chub rub shorts but I can’t imagine that shorts would sit properly over the top.

Those do look lovely- might be the only shorts I'd consider!

It was me who commented on the SNAG. I'm a regular customer of their tights- they are fantastic and the only ones I now wear as they fit properly, I'm a C and they're perfect. They've also been great for 6 foot size 10 niece. But I do feel that their other products- chub rub and clothing- is whole-heartedly aimed at the plus-sized market. Their marketing in heavily geared to this demographic. There was a huge thread some months ago about this. I think they definitely read it as immediately there have been a much bigger range of models. I now see a few models like me- a size 14/12 50 year old mammy! However, this is very recent. Additionally, I don't know about you, buy I don't know many people lower than a 14/16 who have thigh rubbing issues. I bought them when I was a little bigger for dresses when it's very warm.

herecomesthepun · 29/06/2022 15:13

I'm a 12 and my thighs rub when it's sweaty in the summer. I think you'd have to be very thin for your thighs not to meet!

Shinyandnew2022 · 30/06/2022 10:33

Just come back to update - the
Boden shorts arrived and I love them !
Thanks so much for the recommendations.
I suspect I will struggle to wear them out in public apart from on holiday but that's a start right ?
Did you get something as well OP ?

Yep I have worked very hard to lose weight in the last couple of years and now size 12 ish ( but pear shaped ) with a BMI of about 22 I am pretty happy with myself .
But my thighs are chunky and have always rubbed - I can still remember returning a pair of jeans to jigsaw in my early 20s as they had worn between the legs in a short space of time - she told me it was because my thighs rubbed together .. I slunk off feeling ashamed .
Like so many things it's just body shape / genetics / luck of the draw .
