M & S, was I just lucky?

Shopping today for some chinos with OH and discovered just how dire the high street choices are, except for M & S. He bought two pairs of chinos, 3 t shirts and a pair of shoes. They all feel lovely quality cotton. I also found a lovely pair of good quality chinos for me (womens) which look great. Usually I have to try on 10 pairs for every one that fits. Some of the stuff they are getting in is spot on. Was I just lucky today?

Zara on the other hand were awful and as for Cos, tbh I'm fed up with voluminous drapey things.

I've got a few nice things from M&S recently. Some lovely wide leg, button fly jeans that fit like a glove. And their shorts are very good too. I don't know if I've changed, or they've changed - or both!

People are so funny about M&S, I guess because it's seen as an institution. I clicked on one of their Instagram adverts recently (because I liked the jeans in it) and the comments underneath were so negative. I've never seen another fashion brand have responses like that, people usually just ignore things that they don't like. With M&S people seem to be disappointed that they're not making clothes solely for them 🤷‍♀️

Ooh which jeans please?

Lineala · 24/06/2022 13:56

I returned this morning and bought another pair in green, but they didn't have the stone colour in my size so I'll get them online if I can. Also bought two feather pillows and they're much better than the John Lewis ones. JL were either £10 eah or £80 and M & S £37.50 for two and much fuller than the JL offering. That's my shopping done. I hope they're back on track anyway, the prospect of a High St without M & S feels a bit sad.

@napody these ones www.marksandspencer.com/tencel-rich-high-waisted-wide-leg-jeans/p/clp60562356 they're really lovely - feel very casual and 70s with a tucked in t shirt.

Definition of middle age = you go into M&S and your brain says "hey - nice stuff..." It happend to me recently. I only ever bought undies from there until this year when I have bought 2 skirts and some jeans. The stuff is not all frumpy either. One of the skirts is verging on being a bit tarty but I like it.

Purpleavocado · 24/06/2022 15:39

I love M&S, they have a massive range, lots of sizes and height fittings, half sizes in shoes. The clothes reasonably priced for the quality. Of course some of the products are aimed to an older section of the market, but there are plenty of fashionable choices available. Delivery and returns through my local food hall are really easy.

Kwiregirl · 24/06/2022 15:55

Oh - one other thing (credit where credit is due) they do good tights too (quality and fit). My go to place for tights now that Debenhams has gone is M&S. Having said that, their range has reduced in recent years and they have concentrated on cheap, everyday, plain, black varieties. I loved their posh cotton tights but last winter they were out of stock. Years ago Boots and the big supermarkets were good for tights but no more. Maybe it is because they are just less popular and don't sell well.

But did they try to upsell you any perfect pairings?

😂

perenniallymessy · 24/06/2022 17:23

I've recently discovered M&S too, have bought quite a few things for not too much money.

I messaged my DSis to ask if it was a sign that I'd given up and accepted middle age if I was happily shopping in M&S and she said lots of her stylish friends are raving about it this year.

Agree that the Chinos are brilliant, a really nice fit and feel. I went the other night and tried loads on and left with some great shorts, a vest top, a tshirt, some wide leg pure linen cropped trousers, a four pack of knickers and a bra, all for £90.

I've finally signed up to Sparks and I've got a 10% off voucher so I might go shower again soon. It's so long since I bought myself new clothes I'm having a bit of a splurge this year. It's only about ten minutes to our nearest large M&S and it's open late so I can pop there when DS is at Cubs and do a quick shop.

I did find some of the things a bit hit and miss though- some of the shorts and jeans I tried on had a very strange fit.

perenniallymessy · 24/06/2022 17:24

Oh, and Per Una is still crap.

Jazzapples1 · 25/06/2022 20:01

I’ve been all over town recently looking for jeans. Didn’t find anything I liked. I could fill a wardrobe quite easily with all the M&S jeans I like that actually fit well too. Sizing can vary though and how well they are sewn. Took back a pair of slim boot cuts recently because one pocket hole was cut lower than the other. Only 1/2 cm but I knew it was there…

Sandal styles are great but wide and there’s no way I’d pay for something that says leather uppers to put up with my feet sliding around on synthetic soles in the heat. Same goes for the slippers. Lovely styles but why bother when you can get sheepskin slippers from Aldi for less.

bellocchild · 03/07/2022 18:40

What I like about M&S is that it's still good quality but not over-priced. Stuff like tshirts and ankle-grazer trousers are genuinely affordable. Result...

TabithaTittlemouse · 03/07/2022 18:41

I love m and s. Especially their beauty selection

D0lphine · 03/07/2022 18:46

Yeah I like the jeans too although I tend to get a size smaller than other places.

Jeans are so comfortable and wearable! I also got 2 trench coats - both gorgeous fabric.

FlyingGoose · 03/07/2022 18:46

I buy loads from M and S. The sizing is reliable, the clothes wash well. I bought a blue leopard print dress a few weeks ago and had so many compliments on it I started to feel quite embarrassed!

BatshitCrazyWoman · 03/07/2022 18:53

I find M&S sizing really odd, so things don't fit me well. And the same with Zara, except in there everything is also ridiculously long (and the one in my local town is like a jumble sale).

Upswelling and perfect pairings 😅

I wonder what happened to that poster! She didn't return to her thread in the end.

darisdet · 03/07/2022 19:27

I agree about the improvements, OP.

Greenberg · 03/07/2022 19:29

I've got those chinos. I think they're great and good quality.

NeverDropYourMooncup · 03/07/2022 19:34

My nearest M&S (a large one) seems to specialise in stocking all the things that nobody wants to buy before their 80th birthday. Especially the ones that simultaneously depend upon a huge back zip that most 80 year olds wouldn't be able to reach to do up.

And if I'm looking at paying over thirty quid for a bra, the least they could do is actually stock the matching knickers.

eatsleepswimdive · 03/07/2022 20:50

M&S is just brilliant at the moment. Far and away my favourite shop

Ylvamoon · 03/07/2022 20:56

Did a gluless, young & dashing shop assistant named Adrian (?) advice you on colour coordination? 🙃

Ylvamoon · 03/07/2022 20:59

PS, I have recently bought their cargo trousers.... they are great and wash well.
