What on earth do I wear to Disney in October?

I never wear shorts, they make me feel dumpy. I'm 5ft 2, size 12 and 42yrs. I always wear summer dresses. Any suggestions? I'm thinking dresses won't be very practical for the rides. Do I just suck it up and go the whole hog in shorts, trainers and a bum bag? I think I'll look ridiculous!

Lots of people wear bum bags there. I don't remember skirts being impractical on rides before but shorts are preferable just because of thigh chafing! I'm 5ft 3 and was a size 12 when I last went. I never ever have that problem at home but in was in agony over there and had to buy shorts. I look horrific in shorts! You're also likely to do around 20,000 or more steps a day so comfy shoes are more important than stylish ones.

EVHead · 21/06/2022 20:37

You describe how I dressed and I was fine! 😁
Don't diss the fanny pack! They’re very handy.

It’ll be hot so dress for comfort and walking about all day.

FionnulaTheCooler · 21/06/2022 20:38

Go for the shorts, nobody will look twice at you, there are all sorts of body shapes wearing various summery clothing there so you won't stand out. A backpack is more practical than a bumbag though for carrying rain ponchos, water bottles, things you buy in the shops there etc.

itsasmallworldafterall · 21/06/2022 20:40

I've always wore skirts and dresses and had no problems on any of the rides at Disney, there isn't really any big drops or loops compared to Seaworld/Universal. I have always been lucky to not get any chafing either.

FriendlyPineapple · 21/06/2022 20:48

Mickey Mouse ears 😁

Quartz2208 · 21/06/2022 20:52

I wear dresses with cycling shorts

Disney bags are fine - Universal a bum bag is needed to avoid lockers on the big rides

JustRestingMyEyesForAMinute · 21/06/2022 20:52

I'd probably wear cropped leggings and a short summer dress for practicality, if I didn't want to wear shorts and t-shirt.

Comfortable and cool is really all that matters but covering the essentials whilst clambering in and out of rides etc is definitely helpful. I promise you no one will notice or care, they'll all be having too much fun.

Have a great time!

Dorsetdelight211 · 21/06/2022 21:03

Thanks everyone, I've got some chub rub shorts so maybe my dresses will be ok!

I've no idea what to wear on my feet either! Will trainers be too hot? I look bloody awful in trainers and dresses too. They seem to cut my legs off and make me look stumpy.

Will get a bumbag, DH will carry the rucksack.

Get a pair of white converse style shoes, they match everything!

3peassuit · 21/06/2022 21:21

I was at Disney Florida a few weeks back. I wore linen and cotton dresses and they were fine on the rides. You do see all shapes and sizes there, as long as you feel comfortable, you’ll be okay.

greyinganddecaying · 21/06/2022 21:28

If you're feeling adventurous you could try disneybounding 😁

Sketchers. An absolute must. You will walk miles and miles and you MUST have really comfy shoes.

whenwillthemadnessend · 21/06/2022 21:37

How about a play suit or summer weight jumpsuit so looks like a dress but more practical. At Disney anything goes so wear anything you like. No one will bat an eyelid.

HermioneWeasley · 21/06/2022 21:37

Honestly, dress for comfort. Nobody will be looking at you.

hartof · 21/06/2022 21:39

Shorts and trainers you will be fine! I never wear shorts and trainers but I did in Florida and felt okay. I just used a cross body bag from river island that had a few compartments which was enough for me and DH carried a backpack for sun cream, water and fans.

Noooooo, way too flat!

whenwillthemadnessend · 21/06/2022 21:47

I had a pair of walking type sandals from mountain wear house. They were not too chunky and in a peach coral colour so quite pretty. They were cool and supportive and waterproof too as it rains heavy showers from time in Florida plus water rides.

Itstime1 · 21/06/2022 21:49

I went to Disney Florida in October in 2019 (pre covid). I wore shorts and cycling shorts and oversized T shirts the whole trip. My dresses stayed in the case 😂

trainers are a must and make sure they are
comfortable. You do ALOT of walking. Take a light back pack (we used one that packs away into itself). I also recommend the cooling towels (think you can get them on Amazon for like £10. So good in the heat).

You will be fine as long as your comfy, comfort is key!

also if you’re going in Oct in Florida I highly recommend doing the Halloween party night! It’s so fun! Enjoy

Skechers are your friend. Shorts are good or knee length summer dresses. Honestly, don’t worry about what you wear. All shapes and sizes will be in the parks. You won’t look out of place. I e also worn a denim skirt or a cotton skirt. I wear cotton cycling short things from Primark underneath.

Oceanus · 21/06/2022 21:54

Are we talking Florida or Paris?... If we're talking Paris I wouldn't plan that far ahead. Paris in October can be like summer but it can be proper cold too. I'd look at the forecast closer to your trip to have a rough idea and go from there.

wonderstuff · 21/06/2022 21:56

I find that trousers are cooler than dresses or shorts, I wear thin baggy trousers, harem style and comfy trainers. I have been fine in sandals but don’t like wearing them on some of the roller coasters.

Id recommended shorts and a rash vest if doing any water parks. I also take a scarf, used for covering arms when aircon is too cold and also covering shoulders in midday sun if my outfit is strappy.

Dorsetdelight211 · 21/06/2022 21:59

Yes Florida, I don't think I'd be worried about wearing shorts to Paris in October 🥶

Thanks for all the replies. Great tips! Off to Google sketchers. I like the cycling shorts idea too!

Just dress for comfort. Everyone else does. No-one dresses to be looked at, so there is no need to overthink it. I wore Sketchers GoWalk and sandals on alternating days. I wore shorts, skirts and dresses. I don't like white knuckle rides so it didn't matter what I wore.

Oh, and I had a cross body bag. Rucksacks make your back sweaty.

BeyondMyWits · 21/06/2022 22:04

Linen cropped trousers, or lightweight cropped cargo pants. Pretty cotton blouse on top - with shoulder cover. The sun is fierce out there. I wore walking sandals on days that we were doing wet rides (wet rides are WET) and sketchers trainers when we were spending whole days in the parks.
We went "out, out" a couple of nights, so took a nice pair of strappy sandals with a midi dress and a cardi as air con is COLD.
