Am always a sucker for cotton, plus it's got pockets, so I bought this today. The one in the link is petite but I'm not (5'8, size 10). It does add a bit of bulk to my hips but as a pear I might as well embrace it! What would you wear it with for everyday, non work wear?

It also reminds me a lot of a skirt I had in ca 2005 - it it really dated (or am I so ancient that fashion has come.full circle??!)

Well whatever you do don't have a top hanging out, that's a great way to look totally rectangular. I'd go for a looseish v neck t shirt tucked in, mid wedge espadrilles, and possibly some sort of messy pony with a scarf in or interesting earrings.

BusterGonad · 16/06/2022 13:03

I'd wear it with a plan t shirt tucked in. Well, I wouldn't as I just can't bring myself to tuck stuff in... But you know what I mean.

Moj1t0 · 16/06/2022 13:05

Tucked in is definitely needed. Still getting used to that, reminds me of grandparents and teachers insisting on tucked in tops!

I like it! It has a 1950s vibe so I agree with a plainish top and ponytail with accessories. Cropped jumper or cardigan would work too - you need to show the waist.

AnnaSW1 · 16/06/2022 13:54

vest top tucked in

AmISpeakingAnotherLanguage · 16/06/2022 14:28

omg I bloody love this skirt!! I need to go to sainsburys now.

I would wear it with a tee tucked in, a short blouse, or a blouse tied at the waist (and I say this as a short chubby woman, who has accepted she'll never have a flat stomach)

BusterGonad · 16/06/2022 14:34

I wish I could tuck in, how did you get over the fear of it. I just can't do it.

PaddingtonBearStareAgain · 16/06/2022 14:40

I have one like this. Feellike I'm morphing into my mum 🤣.

I wear it with a t-shirt tucked in. Also looks ok with a 'fitted' tshirt.

I follow some Instagram influencers and kid myself that I'm channelling a similar vibe (until I get an accidental glimpse at my reflection in a shop window!)

I have a skirt in a similar style and wear it with a bodysuit, so no issues with tucking a top in!

BeanyBops · 16/06/2022 14:57

My unrequested pov: take it back and have a look online for authentic vintage skirts in this style. You could find something wonderful!

Otherwise I'd go for a shirt. Don't dress it down - wear with any sort of bold print vintage shirt tucked in, chunky gold jewellery, and ballet flats (they seem to be around again). Or go really classic with a smarter more subtle shirt, silk and a block colour maybe. Makes a gorgeous statement.

Swearwolf · 16/06/2022 15:19

Instead of fully tucking in, I like to twist a section at the front and tuck that in, with the rest of it looser fitted. Like a French tuck.

indoorplantqueen · 16/06/2022 15:32

I've one like that and wear it with a body suit so it stays in place.

Laiste · 16/06/2022 16:16

Lordy i remember body suits the first (i think? mid/late 90s?) time around.

All that fiddling around with your gusset when you need the loo .... not doing that again.

However i am slowly overcoming 'tucking in fear'. It takes a big leap of faith.

Tucking it was what the 'oldies' used to do back in the 80s. Also school shirts had to be tucked in. As a teen i would rather die than tuck something in and it's just stuck that way for years.

Now here we are and i'm eyeing my smart and thoroughly trendy teens and 20 something DDs who all tuck in 99% of the time. They look good ....... and i look very yesterday! So i'm tucking .........

Ladylili · 16/06/2022 16:19

I have a skirt like this I bought an off the shoulder bodysuit to wear with it

MayBeee · 16/06/2022 16:22

I like it , it looks good on the model. To be fair if you want honest opinions , you should post a pic of yourself so we can answer , scrub out or hide your face.

Sounds like a plan.

dontgobaconmyheart · 16/06/2022 19:43

I don't think it looks particularly stylish even on the model so would struggle personally. I think realistically the best way to wear it would be to tuck in a fairly form fitting vest top/t shirt or french tuck some kind of shirt or light knitwear as others have suggested but it looks so bulky that I'd find that difficult to style and difficult to choose footwear for too.

If I didn't already have things at home to wear with anything I'd bought and was stuck on how to style it I'd always return it but appreciate that's not everyone's viewpoint. I often return things I really like for that same reason.

Rina66 · 16/06/2022 21:08

I love it, definitely wear it with a body suit and a little cropped jacket

Lovinglife45 · 16/06/2022 21:10

A fitted top would be flattering.

Moj1t0 · 16/06/2022 21:29

Thanks, all. I tried it on again at home and have decided the pleats are just too bulky and unflattering. I really WANTED to like it but no point in keeping it if it's not right. Sorry to Sainsbury's and thanks MNs, I really appreciate your replies.

Google Sarah Chatto - think you are looking for that kind of style. tucked in shirt and cardi with 3/4 length sleeves.

Sallygoround631 · 16/06/2022 22:41

thats a gorgeous skirt and I usually don't like them.
I can see it with a bodysuit beneath with a ballerina neckline, maybe a fitted light cardi over a strappy bodysuit, or a Chanel style jacket. It is also the kind of skirt that would suit ballet flats, it has a sort of Parisian vibe for me.

Cos made one similar years ago but it was a silly length. I love it.

mac1974 · 16/06/2022 22:44

As an aside, I really like those wedges the model is wearing

Agreed - the wedges are lovely.

Another look to consider would be a cheesecloth milk maid top (drawstring neckline and short puff sleeves). Everything is back to the 70s now - even those lovely wedges.
