Please explain this fashion 'style'

I've seen countless photos in online stores of women wearing shirts/blouses with only half the top front tucked in.

Please explain this fashion style to me as I just don't get it.

To me it either looks like you only had time to half tuck the shirt in before you left the house after getting dressed or when you went to the loo, half of the shirt got tucked in but you were going for the full untucked look (to me the other closest thing is when someone goes to the loo and the back of their skirt gets stuck in their pants).

It just looks untidy to me.

I want to understand the style is all.

I think it's called a french tuck. Trinny is an advocate. AFAIK, it's supposed to show off your figure a bit without the full tucked in look. But I agree with you OP; just looks silly on me if I try it.

CakeWedge · 11/06/2022 12:02

It’s called a half tuck or French tuck. In reality, I think it only looks alright on heavily styled models on clothing websites! In reality most people either tuck or don’t.

I’m sure others will disagree.

PuppyMonkey · 11/06/2022 12:03

French tuck isn’t it? One of many things that are currently in fashion that we’ll all look back and laugh about in a few years.Grin

KangarooKenny · 11/06/2022 12:04

I like it. I’m currently wearing my T-shirts that way

dunpaying · 11/06/2022 12:05

I think it looks lovely if you have the right figure

Not for me I'm afraid

SenecaFallsRedux · 11/06/2022 12:05

A French tuck? As a short-waisted person, I like it. When I tuck the whole shirt or top in, I can look out of proportion. But I only do it when wearing casual clothes. I wouldn't do it for work.

DeanStockwelll · 11/06/2022 12:07

I am not sure about the half tuck or the French tuck , it's more like the scruff tuck imo 😁

Turnthatoff · 11/06/2022 12:10

It’s just another way of styling a shirt. Like knotting it at the front for example. I like it. I wear my shirts like that sometimes.

ofwarren · 11/06/2022 12:11

Looks weird on me but I think on some people it definitely looks better than a full tuck or no tuck at all.

FishcakesWithTooMuchCoriander · 11/06/2022 12:11

I like it too. Makes it more obvious that I do have a waist in baggier clothes. It only works with some styles of top though.

Is it currently in fashion though?

I remember YouTubers dressing like this in 2012 lol (beautycrush?)
I don’t think it’s a trend now

I think it’s a cute vibe sometimes to get a more casual look. But I think it only looks good if the untucked side only extends an inch or so below the waist line - having once side completely tucked and one completely down looks odd on most people

Imsittinginthekitchensink · 11/06/2022 12:15

I do it. I've got big boobs and a fat tummy. If I tuck all the way round, I look like a string has been pulled round a bag of potatoes. If I don't tuck, I look massive the way down due to the boobs. A French tuck means I have a semblance of shape without either of the above offending looks.

OneCup · 11/06/2022 12:15

I like it but I like 'messy' looks

zurala · 11/06/2022 12:16

French tuck, currently very in but I've never seen it look good on anyone, it looks messy and weird.

goldfinchonthelawn · 11/06/2022 12:30

It is very in right now. DS is fashion obsessed and he often has a French tuck in his shirts. A beautiful friend does too. I tried. i looked like I'd been to the loo and f accidentally got my shirt caught in my waistband. Not a good look.

LookItsMeAgain · 11/06/2022 12:41

Oh my word - it actually has a name! Every day is a school day as they say.

Thank you for explaining it to me. I now know what it is and what it's called.

I think I'd need a stylist to sort me out with one or else I think I'd end up looking like @goldfinchonthelawn too!

No no. Isn’t the French tuck when you tuck the front middle symmetrically but OP is talking about tucking one half of a shirt?
Completely different!
I like the French tuck but no idea about the other one - it looks odd.

LookItsMeAgain · 11/06/2022 13:49

The one I'm talking about is demonstrated by the woman wearing the black shirt in this image and less so the taupe/gold colour top:

Tucked or not??

I haven't seen people doing the French tuck for a long time.

I copied this styling when I bought the shirt, from Marie Marot

I tuck the middle of the shirt with the sides symmetrical. I don't do that one half of the shirt tail hanging down look. I agree that does seem a bit unfinished/messy, for me anyway.

ExtremelyDedicated · 11/06/2022 14:15

I've only ever seen it look good on models, never in real life.

elQuintoConyo · 11/06/2022 14:18

I call it the Shirt Mullet: business at the front, party at the back!

I sometimes do it, so I look less like a rectangle.

I don't like white trainers with everything. We're all different. I still wear floaty dresses and skirts with doc martens 😆

MurderAtTheBeautyPageant · 11/06/2022 14:27

It's meant to look French girl insouciant etc.etc.

isthismylifenow · 11/06/2022 14:29

I know what you mean OP, it's not the French tuck that I now. It is just half of one side of a shirt tucked in.

I think it looks very odd too. If the aim is to try create a waist, why only do one one side? I don't mind the front tucked in and the back out, but this lopsided look seems quite popular now.

There are lots of things I don't quite get with fashion at the moment, so I may not be the best at answering....

AuntieMarys · 11/06/2022 14:29

I do the front tuck sometimes. Like a pp, I have massive boobs and waist and it makes boxy tops more flattering
